4. CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This study will focus on understanding the impact of the modes of transport on the
development of the tourism industry. This chapter will also focus on the background of the
study, problem statement, purpose of the study, objectives, significance of the study and the
scope of the study.
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

1.3 THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to establish the impact of the modes of transport on the
development of the tourism industry with a case study of Mukono District.
1.4 RESEARCHER OBJECTIVES
The following are research objectives;
i. To assess the impact of road transport on the development of the tourism industry
ii. To examine the impact of water transport on the development of the tourism industry
iii. To establish the relationship between road and water transport in Mukono district
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following are the research questions;
i. What is the impact of road transport on the development of the tourism industry?
ii. What is the impact of water transport on the development of the tourism industry?
iii. What is the relationship between road and water transport in Mukono district?
1.6 THE HYPOTHESIS
The researcher believes that there is a direct relationship between modes of transport and
development of the tourism industry in Uganda.
1.6 THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY
Below are the set boundaries of this research;
1.6.1 Content
The study is to investigate the relationship between road and water transport in Mukono
district in Uganda.

The research is to be carried out in Mukono region Located in Mukono District.
1.6.3 Time
The research id to be carried out within three months that is from July to September 2014
1.7 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
i. The study will be of great importance since it is part of the requirements leading to the
award of a Diploma in Travel & Tourism management.
ii. The study shall be of great help in finding better ways as per the modes of transport in
Mukono district.
iii. The study will also be of good value when finding means to solve the problems poor
transport means in Mukono district.
iv. The study will also give a lot of courage for the new employers, employees in the
field of hospitality industry so as to keep them active with positive attitude towards
their work.
v. The resultant solutions will create harmony in the hospitality business thus leading to
stable profit and increased effort by the staff members in their tourism activities.
1.9 THE LIMITATIONS OF THE RESEARCH
The researcher may face the following limitations but these will not stop him to conduct the
research in future;
i. Wrong information; the researcher may face a problem by getting wrong
information from respondents in that they may not answer the questions correctly.
ii. Few funds; the researcher may face the problem of funds that is to say the expense on
transporting him, his accommodation, his food, expense on communication means etc.
iii. Lack of enough willing respondents; the researcher may face an obstacle of not
finding willing respondents.
iv. Time; the researcher may be busy and also the hotel where he is going to research on
may also be busy and their free time does not collide.
v. Language barrier; the researcher may face the problem of language barrier in that
the group that he may want to research on , they do not know the language he
understands and the researcher may not know the language that they understand.
1.10 DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following are definition of some terms,
6. DEVELOPMENT: this is the growth of an institution that performs certain functions in line
with the objective of that institution.
TOURISM: This is the movement of people from their place of residents to another place for
a short stay for the purposes of leisure or otherwise.
TOURISM INDUSTRY: This is the establishment of leisure stay in a given place for a short
period but being promoted as a whole by an organization.
UGANDA TOURISM BOARD: This is an organization responsible for the licensing and
supervising of the hospitality enterprises to ensure quality in the hospitality sector
CUSTOMER CARE: This is the way a customer is given a service at the place where he
wants it to e offered with an aim of making the clients return to that business
