It’s a sad but also romantic story following a couple’s relationship start from a little seed then eventually blossoming to a bittersweet fruit. I say a bittersweet fruit because some of the time they are not so caring to one another and sometime they are. A boy named Paul is a Peace Corps dropout and Susan is in freefall when they meet on a beach in Bali. Where Susan is travel with her best friend. They keep in touch and later in Boston; they live together and then marry. They go through ups and down like every couple. Separating briefly, then reconciling in a New York penthouse, she has become a successful photographer; he a successful film editor. Paul wants children and Susan does not. Paul finds out that she had an abortion six months earlier without his knowledge or approval and tells her he found out and her birthday celebration turns a shambles. One final, quick reunion is attempted when he shows up at her house but the couple comes to terms with the failure of their once romantic relationship and she runs off to a date why he looks at old pictures coming to terms that it’s also time for him to move on.
As for archetypes, I saw Susan as the carefree does what she want type of person. I saw Paul as the lover and caring type who does what’s best for them both. He brother was the hard worker and urged him to get a better career, their friend that helps with the photos I saw her as the caregiver, listener and realist who seemed to side with Paul most of the time. The blonde who is best friends with Susan was really a carefree hippy type of chick. The couple that lived in the woods was like the strange, hippies who tried to seem like a middle class type of parents sometimes.
I think the theme of the play was a post hippy bittersweet romance. I think the antagonist was Susan because she got an abortion even though Paul wanted kids. On the other hand I think he could also be considered the antagonist because he blew it in her face very rudely. I think the protagonist was the lady who worked with them because she was always there to listen to their problems and give advice even though it was hard because they had a strange relationship. I like the how between scenes they would show clips and videos while playing music from the 70’s. I thought the open relationships with Paul and Susan was very weird. Plus, I didn't understand how Susan could be so stand offish. I liked the different characters that came in and out of the play like the interior designer, the African guy, Paul’s brother, Paul’s friends, and Susan’s friends/ workers. The nudity was really shocking to me. I was not expecting that, but I guess I’m just not used to most play like that.
