The document suggests including a resume, projects, publications, and research. It provides more details on using WordPress, including its flexibility through plugins and themes. The rest of the document involves an in-person workshop where attendees create user experience maps and sticky note designs for their portfolios before a WordPress demo.
2. SO WHAT IS AN ONLINE PORTFOLIO
AND WHAT’S THE USE?
3. WHAT CAN I USE TO CREATE ONE?
• WordPress
• PortfolioBox
• Scratch- Hosted by yourself and managed by yourself
– HTML/CSS
– JavaScript, JQuery
– Ruby on Rails, php
– ASP.NET
WHAT TO DISPLAY?
• Resume
• Projects (Graphic Design, Websites, Coursework, Papers, Coding Projects, Mobile Apps,
etc.)
• Publications
• Research
5. WORDPRESS
• WordPress is an online, open source website creation tool
• WordPress started as just a blogging system, but has evolved to be used as full
content management system and so much more through the thousands of
plugins and widgets and themes, WordPress is limited only by your imagination
• For example, famous blogs like Mashable and TechCrunch are both on
WordPress. News outlets like The New York Times’ blogs and CNN’s on-air
personality blogs all use WordPress, too.
7. LET’S THINK OF OUR IDEA
LET’S CREATE A USER EXPERIENCE MAP
COME UP WITH THE BASIC IDEA AND
CONCEPT
8. THE STICKY NOTE PROJECT
All of you have sticky notes.
Put one sticky note at the top. Write down what your portfolio is (Blog, Graphic
Design, Web Development, Technical Blog, etc…. )
Put another sticky note under it and write the different section of your portfolio. If
there’s multiple sections, write them each on a sticky note and place them
underneath each other.
To the side of the different sections, place sticky notes about what projects you are
going to put in that section
Online portfolios are a fantastic way for college students to showcase your skills, work experience and projects. Online portfolios are also a great way to display your knowledge and interests to your friends and family. Portfolios can help you make a great first impression, shows you are serious about the job, and demonstrates that you are able to do quality work. It can also help build your resume for future employers. You must remember that in order to create a successful portfolio, you must be simplistic, focused on objectives, and include accomplishments. Online portfolios doesn’t necessarily mean for technology majors, but for any major (like business, art, graphic design, etc).
Writers and designers aren’t the only job candidates creating unique personal websites. Engineers in tech hubs deal with competitive interview processes; business majors write finance blogs to impress hiring managers; sales applicants need to prove they’re great culture fits.
Personal Story
Web Developers generally tend to build their websites from scratch using programming languages because they want to show off their web skills. But what about non-web developers and just anyone in general? What would they use?
This is where robust platform websites that have complex website building tools right in it come to use (ex- Wordpress). No matter what major or what type of developer you are, it makes sense to use a platform because when you enter your career/work force, you might have to end up using big web platforms (ex Magenta, Big Commerce), and if you understand using these robust platforms already, then you have more skills to offer the company.
