What problem did we have? Or why did we switch?
• High avail, lack thereof – inefficient sharing poor unreliable
• Concurrency – processing data packets in order, per vehicle
• Testability – unit tests
• Maintainability – readability

AKKA.NET SOLUTION
High Availability – Consistent Hashing Router will rebalance
when a node leaves/fails.
Concurrency – Actors are inherently thread safe. We don’t
worry about locks!
Testable – Actors are small, have one job, and only
communicate via messages.
Maintainable – Small actors are easy to grok.
Took 85% less code to do the same job
Code is just focus on the problem

MONITORING AND
DEPLOYMENT
We use statsd, graphite, and grafana to monitor our akka.net
cluster activity and performance.
We deploy our akka.net application packed as a topshelf
service with ansible.
In the future we are looking at docker and ubuntu for hosting.

Reactive Streams 1.0.0 is now live, and so are our implementations in Akka Streams 1.0 and Slick 3.0. Reactive Streams is an engineering collaboration between heavy hitters in the area of streaming data on the JVM. With the Reactive Streams Special Interest Group, we set out to standardize a common ground for achieving statically-typed, high-performance, low latency, asynchronous streams of data with built-in non-blocking back pressure—with the goal of creating a vibrant ecosystem of interoperating implementations, and with a vision of one day making it into a future version of Java. Akka (recent winner of “Most Innovative Open Source Tech in 2015”) is a toolkit for building message-driven applications. With Akka Streams 1.0, Akka has incorporated a graphical DSL for composing data streams, an execution model that decouples the stream’s staged computation—it’s “blueprint”—from its execution (allowing for actor-based, single-threaded and fully distributed and clustered execution), type safe stream composition, an implementation of the Reactive Streaming specification that enables back-pressure, and more than 20 predefined stream “processing stages” that provide common streaming transformations that developers can tap into (for splitting streams, transforming streams, merging streams, and more). Slick is a relational database query and access library for Scala that enables loose-coupling, minimal configuration requirements and abstraction of the complexities of connecting with relational databases. With Slick 3.0, Slick now supports the Reactive Streams API for providing asynchronous stream processing with non-blocking back-pressure. Slick 3.0 also allows elegant mapping across multiple data types, static verification and type inference for embedded SQL statements, compile-time error discovery, and JDBC support for interoperability with all existing drivers.

This leads to over a trillion events, amounting to 3 PB, flowing through the Keystone infrastructure to help improve customer experience and glean business insights. The self-serve Keystone stream processing service processes these messages in near real-time with at-least once semantics in the cloud. PayPal currently processes tens of billions of signals per day from different sources in batch and streaming mode. The data processing platform is the one powering these different analytical needs and use cases, not just at PayPal but our adjacencies like Venmo, Hyperwallet and iZettle. End users of this platform demand access to data insights with as much flexibility as possible to explore it with low processing latency. One such use case is where our Switchboard(data de-multiplexer) platform where we process approximately 20 billion events daily and provide data to different teams and platforms with-in PayPal and also to platform outside PayPal for more insights. When we started building this platform Kafka was just another asynchronous message processing platform for us but we have seen it evolving to a place where its adds value not just in terms of event processing but also for platform resiliency and scalability. Takeaway for the audience: Most people work with and have knowledge about data. With this talk I want to present information which is relevant and meaningful to the audience. Information and examples which will make it easier for attendees to understand our complex system and hopefully have some practical takeaways to use Kafka for similar problems on their hand.

After a quick overview and introduction of Apache Kafka, this session cover two components which extend the core of Apache Kafka: Kafka Connect and Kafka Streams/KSQL. Kafka Connects role is to access data from the out-side-world and make it available inside Kafka by publishing it into a Kafka topic. On the other hand, Kafka Connect is also responsible to transport information from inside Kafka to the outside world, which could be a database or a file system. There are many existing connectors for different source and target systems available out-of-the-box, either provided by the community or by Confluent or other vendors. You simply configure these connectors and off you go. Kafka Streams is a light-weight component which extends Kafka with stream processing functionality. By that, Kafka can now not only reliably and scalable transport events and messages through the Kafka broker but also analyse and process these event in real-time. Interestingly Kafka Streams does not provide its own cluster infrastructure and it is also not meant to run on a Kafka cluster. The idea is to run Kafka Streams where it makes sense, which can be inside a “normal” Java application, inside a Web container or on a more modern containerized (cloud) infrastructure, such as Mesos, Kubernetes or Docker. Kafka Streams has a lot of interesting features, such as reliable state handling, queryable state and much more. KSQL is a streaming engine for Apache Kafka, providing a simple and completely interactive SQL interface for processing data in Kafka.

But let's face it: even with nice tools like the TPL and async / await, multi-threaded concurrent programming has typically been a bottomless pit of despair, Heisenbugs, and lessons learned the hard way. None of this is true with Akka.NET and the actor model: a powerful programming methodology that makes building concurrent applications easy, fun, and much more powerful than what we had before.

Not long ago in Akka.NET-land we had an issue occur where users noticed a dramatic drop in throughput in Akka.Remote’s message processing pipeline - and to make matters worse, this occurred in a production release of AKka.NET! Yikes, how did that happen? The answer is that although you can use unit tests and code reviews to detect functional problems with code changes and pull requests, using those same mechanisms to detect performance problems with code is utterly ineffective. Even skilled developers who have detailed knowledge about the internals of the .NET framework and CLR are unable to correctly predict how changes to code will impact its performance. Hence why we developed NBench - a .NET performance-testing, stress-testing, and benchmarking framework for .NET applications that works and feels a lot like a unit test.

The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. SYNCROMATICS Provides an integrated hardware and software platform also called "connected bus" which allows logistics planners deep analytics for improving routes and services, while also allowing the riding public know where the bus is, the current number of riders, and estimated arrival time. Syncromatics is a California Clean Tech winning SaaS company.

5. LEGACY SYSTEM Written in mid 2000s for tracking vehicles. Server 1 Cust 1 Cust 2 Server 2 Cust 3 Server 3 Cust 4 Cust 5 What problem did we have? Or why did we switch? • High avail, lack thereof – inefficient sharing poor unreliable • Concurrency – processing data packets in order, per vehicle • Testability – unit tests • Maintainability – readability

6. AKKA.NET SOLUTION High Availability – Consistent Hashing Router will rebalance when a node leaves/fails. Concurrency – Actors are inherently thread safe. We don’t worry about locks! Testable – Actors are small, have one job, and only communicate via messages. Maintainable – Small actors are easy to grok. Took 85% less code to do the same job Code is just focus on the problem

8. MONITORING AND DEPLOYMENT We use statsd, graphite, and grafana to monitor our akka.net cluster activity and performance. We deploy our akka.net application packed as a topshelf service with ansible. In the future we are looking at docker and ubuntu for hosting.
