2. Explain the importance of goal setting in
performance, participation and to control anxiety
Describe the SMART principle of goal setting
3. By setting goals you are able to;
Take up and activity or activities
Achieve more
Improve your performance
Improve your training
Increase motivation
Increase pride and satisfaction
Goal setting can lead to you achieving more and so getting
rewards and increase your motivation level.
Knowing what you want to achieve, will allow you to
concentrate on and improve without distractions
4. When you’ve achieved a goal, you should be
satisfied and give yourself a ‘pat on the back’
Then... Plan to achieve more
Why do people not achieve their goals?
› Didn’t try hard enough
› Poor technique
› Goals were unrealistic
5. So use this info to set goals that will be a
benefit to you. You should see a failed goal as
one that will lead to future success
Once the goal is achieved;
› If it was easy, make the next one harder
› If it took a long-time, make the next one slightly
easier
› If you learned something that should lead to a
change, then change the goal
6. Short term goals, that lead to medium term goals,
that will eventually lead to long term goals
E.G.
To win the league cup (long), the netball team may
have to concentrate on winning more away games
(medium). For this to happen, short term goals
may be, defending strategy (short).
For someone else, it may be to walk to school,
then walk to school and the shops on the week
end, then to run a 5mile race.
7. Swimming Short Term Long Term
Beginner To be confident in
water. To put face in
water
Swim one width
unaided
Weak Improve arm and
leg action
Swim longer
distances without
stopping
Able Learn the correct
techniques for the 4
major strokes
Swim all strokes
effectively and be
able to compete
8. With a partner, decide upon a sport, and discuss what some of the
short term and long term targets might be, for
A beginner.
A weak performer
A more able performer
SPORT Short Term Medium Term Long Term
Beginner
Weak
Able
9. Using the SMARTER principle to guide you as a
coach or performer:
SPECIFIC - directly related to sporting situation
MEASURABLE - progress can be assessed
AGREED - by both performer and coach
REALISTIC - challenging but within capability of
performer
TIMED - a date is set for completion
EXCITING - inspiring and rewarding to the
performer
RECORDED - written down
12. Stress management will help a person playing
sport, e.g. Ina cup final, you feel very anxious...
By setting goals you can help yourself to feel
less stress and anxious. This is used by the top
athletes in the world
13. Goal evaluation is vital if you are going to
progress.
Goal must be clearly defined, this is easy for
sports and activities that have clearly
measurable elements (time, distance etc...)
If a goal is measureable it allows you to assess
and then alter goals to keep you progressing
This will motivate the person to achieve better,
Feedback from a coach or fellow athlete is
important
14. Many people in the UK, will go to a gym for the
first few times then stop. Positive feedback is
vital for a person to continue
It is expected that 50% of women and 60% of
men will be clinically obese by 2050 in the UK
More people are doing ‘other’ activites such as
ballroom dancing, triathlons etc.. Rather than
going to the gym
15. If a person does exercise just to loos weight,
then when this is achieved what will happen?
Revert back to their original lifestyle...
So it is vital that people enjoy their exercise so
they carry on doing it.
