2. semiotics
• Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols.
• It is reflected in media as you can place
people, items or even specific animals in order
to help describe a specific character,
emotional state, or just to help a point come
across.
3. Semiotics examples:
• The use of beautiful women when we look at
makeup and other cosmetics means that
women see them and want to look like them.
• Other techniques would be to compare items,
like comparing cars and watches to show
efficiency and reliability.
4. An example of semiotics
• In this Advert for knifes
they have used an
image of a carrot on a
chopping board.
• The image has been
carefully done to show
how the blade has cut
through the solid
wooden block. This is
implying that the knife
is sharp enough to cut
straight through the
solid wood.
The thickness of the wooden board further
enhances the strength of the blade.
The carrot reminds us that whilst it Is
a tough object, it is also something
that everybody will have cut, and so
anyone will be able to relate.
