JH: We start by asking artists if they have a cause they're passionate about. If they do, then we pair
them with a charity that fits that cause. If they don't, then we try to find something that might
resonate with them a bit, and then we pair them with the right charity.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was founded more than 50 years ago by the late entertainer
Danny Thomas and has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20
to 80 percent, overall. It is also the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated
Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted to children.
I could spend the rest of this article quoting statistics, but instead I would rather share a short story
about care that makes a difference to all those involved in this heart wrenching situation. An
anecdotal benefit, as it is not easy to measure the benefit felt in the heart. There are no measures of
cortisol level, or pain assessment before and after the session. The findings are those which are
expressed by the child, parent and their caregivers.
One year later, Killian's mother - Grainne (pronounced GRAHN-ya) Owen - decided to wage war on
childhood cancer and expanded on the coach's idea. With her husband, Clay Owen, she created
Coaches Curing Kids' Cancer to help other parents avoid the agony they endured. This evolved into a
nationwide effort that caught the eye of a group of teachers who spawned Teachers Curing Kids'
Cancer. Donations are made to the organization in the name of a coach or teacher in lieu of a
traditional gift. However, the coach or teacher still receives a gift from the organization. A win-win
for everyone! Of course, young athletes have also been affected and gave life to Players Curing Kids'
Cancer.

episodes. Her performance of "I Know What Boys Like" only solidified this.
So many times children's books are not age appropriate reading. Where's My Hair? is a book that is

young child.
