The document discusses the importance and meaning of names in the Bible. It notes that biblical names like Daniel, Nathanael, and Joshua have significant meanings. When God changed someone's name in the Bible, like changing Abram to Abraham and Simon to Peter, it was to reflect an important change or role. The document argues that to misuse God's name either shows not understanding its meaning or not caring about its significance. It examines the biblical commandment not to misuse God's name from Exodus 20:7.

Editor's Notes
Naming a child is something parents take seriously. * They don't pick words at random from a Scrabble dictionary. (Though some of the names I see on my court docket may appear that way). Most parents give a lot of thought to their child's name; because it is something the child will wear all his life.My parents named my brother Keven – with two e’s instead of one e and one i. They spelled it that way, as my Dad put it, so he wouldn’t have to go through life dotting an i. Which is more difficult for a lifetime: going through life dotting an i, or going through life correcting misspelling by others and explaining the rationale for the way your name is spelled?* At home, Mary & I have a critter we call Katie. Katie is a dog. We call her a dog because someone a long time ago decided that critters that look like her are dogs. If they had decided to call the animal a "grivet" we wouldn't know what someone meant if they called her a dog.
Shakespeare said: “What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.“Some people say: "There's nothing in a name." * We know better. If that were the case, why would you be offended if I were to call you an idiot & then say: "There's nothing in a name"?
* In our congregation, we have many people with Biblical names: Caleb, David, Deborah, John, Lydia, Mary, Michael, Paul, Rachel. * But I notice we don't have anyone named:Absalom (rebellious son)Balaam (prophet profiteer)Cain (fratricide)Delilah (treacherous girlfriend)Jezebel (wicked queen)Judas (betraying friend)Korah (rebel leader)Nadab (will worship)Pilate (passing the buck)
ThirdcommandmentExodus 20:7 NBLH "No tomarás el nombre del SEÑOR tu Dios en vano, porque el SEÑOR no tendrá por inocente al que tome Su nombre en vano.
Parents named their children to reflect the work of God in their lives.Daniel - "God is my judge“
Nathanael - "Given by God“
Joshua - “Yahweh is salvation" This name was never said without saying the name of God.
When the Lord changed a person's name it was significant.Abram ("exalted father")Renamed Abraham ("father of many")At the time, he was a childless senior citizen.
Jacob ("heel catcher" figuratively "chiseler")Renamed Israel ("struggle with God" figuratively "prince")The name change signified a change in his character at the Jabbok River.
Simon (named after Jacob's impetuous son who impetuously deceived, maimed, then slaughtered the male population of Shechem because of an offense against his sister)Renamed Peter ("rock") because of something Jesus saw and developed in his life. When God changes someone's name it reflects what he sees and develops in that person's character.
God named Jesus. What was the significance?Matthew 1:21 NBLH "Y dará a luz un Hijo, y Le pondrás por nombre Jesús, porque El salvará a Su pueblo de sus pecados."Joseph & Mary were godly. They would have picked a good name.
To name someone is to have dominion over that person.Adam named the animals, signifying that man has dominion over the animals.Adam named the woman, signifying that man has dominion in the home.
God named Adam, signifying that God has dominion over man.
God named Jesus, signifying that man does not have dominion - God does.
Man does not give God names. God gives his names to man so man will know what to call him (i.e. what God is like). He gave his personal name. YHWH is translated LORD. It is the equivalent of "I am".Exodus 3:14 NBLH Y dijo Dios a Moisés: "YO SOY EL QUE SOY," y añadió: "Así dirás a los Israelitas: 'YO SOY me ha enviado a ustedes.'"Yes, God is light, love, and spirit. Bur fundamentally, GOD IS."I am" stresses that God is faithful, eternal, sovereign.
I hear people misuse the name of the Lord, then say: "I didn't mean anything by it." That's precisely what the command is about. When we use the name of God so that it doesn't have its meaning, we misuse the name.
Jesus told the Jews: "Before Abraham was I am". They said: "You didn't mean that" and tried to stone him. But he did mean it.John 8:58-59 NBLH Jesús les dijo: "En verdad les digo, que antes que Abraham naciera, Yo soy." (59) Entonces tomaron piedras para tirárselas, pero Jesús se ocultó y salió del templo.
Exodus 20:7 NIV You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.Exodus 20:7 NBLH "No tomarás el nombre del SEÑOR tu Dios en vano, porque el SEÑOR no tendrá por inocente al que tome Su nombre en vano.Note: "guiltless" means "clean“Misuse of God's name makes us unclean. One index of our moral cleanness is how we use the name of God.
Profanity is not just cursing.Latin pro "out of" + fanus "temple". Literally means, "taking holy things out of their holy context.Refers to the use of the holy name to voice unholy feelings.I used to golf, but I was a poor golfer. If drive goes left (hook); right (slice), straight (miracle). One time paired up with strangers. On 2nd hole, they asked what I did. Preacher. Amazing how language transformed.Indicates profanity is a habit that can be stopped if we want to.Profanity manifests a deeper problem. Jesus said it’s not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out of him.Profanity reflects a deeper problem than speech.Evaluate sayings we use to express feelings that are unholy; some are close to profanity - euphemisms for the name of God.
FrivolityUse of the name to tell jokes robs God's name of reverence. Is that what God's name is for?Secularizing the name. Sometimes we refer to him as "Somebody up there" or "The Man Upstairs." The problem is that God gives us his names, we don't give God names. He's told us to call him Father, Lord, Almighty, but not secularized names.
Trivial Oaths - Oaths are okay. The High Priest said "I adjure you by the name of the Most High". Jesus didn't balk. He didn't say: "You can't say that". Instead, he answered.Paul said, "God is my witness".Not oaths on trivial matters.“I swear to God that's what he said.”“God is my witness I never saw so much food.”Is that what the holy name of God is for?The Bible says: "Let your yes be yes, and your no, no." People of integrity don't have to invoke oaths about trivial matters.
AssembliesWe sing "Rock of Ages" & think about what's for lunch. My personal opinion is that the church could use more awe.
HypocrisyWe appear religious, but use the name for personal gain.Commercializing the name. "Buy from me, I'm a Christian." We use God's name to make a profit? Christian is what we are, not a way to advertise.Politicize the name. Politicians go after the Black vote, the Hispanic vote, the Women's vote, the Evangelical vote, etc. They try to convince us that they are the godliest candidates and that the godly people will vote for them.
Misappropriation without God’s consent to get something you want.Television preachers say, “God told me to ask for eight million dollars.” “God is calling me to ask for your car.”The profanity of the church is more dangerous than that of the street. Jesus talked about those who conned people but didn't know the first thing about the name. This week in Texas, Warren Jeffs, a polygamist sect leader was convicted of sexually assaulting children who were given to him as wives by parents who were under his control because he claimed to be a prophet from God. People use God’s name to accomplish, not what God wants, but what they themselves want.Matthew 7:21-23 NIV "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!‘Matthew 7:21-23 NBLH "No todo el que Me dice: 'Señor, Señor,' entrará en el reino de los cielos, sino el que hace la voluntad de Mi Padre que está en los cielos. (22) "Muchos Me dirán en aquel día: 'Señor, Señor, ¿no profetizamos en Tu nombre, y en Tu nombre echamos fuera demonios, y en Tu nombre hicimos muchos milagros?' (23) "Entonces les declararé: 'Jamás los conocí; APARTENSE DE MI, LOS QUE PRACTICAN LA INIQUIDAD.'
Plea for integrity. It's a call to be what we claim to be.Let the name mean what it means.Alexander the Great and the thieving Alexander. "Change your name or change your ways."Christian, if you're going to wear the name, make it stand for what it means.
Promise of severity. The Lord will not hold guiltless those who misuse the name.Challenge to be careful with sacred things.
Romans 10:13 NBLH porque: "TODO AQUEL QUE INVOQUE EL NOMBRE DEL SEÑOR SERA SALVO."That refers to more than words; it refers to a life commitment.Prayer: Father, help us not be concerned that someone else needed this lesson. Help us see how we can profit from a personal examination of how we use your name.* Invitation: Acts 22:16 NBLH 'Y ahora, ¿por qué te detienes? Levántate y bautízate, y lava tus pecados invocando Su nombre.'If you haven't washed, you're still dirty. Wash and be clean.
