2. Introduction
In Andrew Goodwin’s theory he says that when the audience
watches music videos, they look our for 5 different aspects.
In his theory he talks about these 5 different aspect’s and how they
occur. These 5 aspects are;
Thought Beats
Narrative and performance
Star Image
Relation of visual’s to the song
Technical Aspects of the music video
3. Thought Beats
The first aspect of his theory is Thought beat and this is known as
seeing the sound in your head.
Though Beats are broken down into three steps; First step, second step
and third step.
First step – This is when the audience listens to the song and
interprets it, this involves looking in to the chorus and verses.
Second Step – This is when the audience knows the voice of the
song. When artists make a song they need to be unique so they can
be known from the rest.
Third step – This when the audience watch the video and see what
story is trying to be told whether it be love, death. This can be done
through the vocals of the song.
4. Narrative and Performance
Goodwin’s theory he says and illustrates how we
should ignore common narrative.
Music videos should be balances, with both
narrative and performance.
Some songs always fail to show a whole narrative
which leaves us trying to decide what has just
happened.
In his theory he says that songs fail to complete
the narrative of the song.
5. Star Image
Andy Goodwin says that: The creation of character
identities for stars provides a point of identification for
the audience/spectator which is especially important
when lyrics often lack depth.
The star image is another important aspect of music
videos.
The star image is a huge part of a music video
according to Goodwin.
This aspect is how the artist appears to the audience
in a variety of factors.
Example; When the audience watch a music video
they look at what they are wearing, their personality
and their overall appearance.
6. Relation of Visuals to the song
In this aspect there are three parts. According to
Andrew Goodwin he says there are three ways in
which music videos work to promote a song.
The three ways are;
Illustrate – When someone is making a music
video they use a set of images to illustrate the
meaning of the song and genre.
Amplify – This when the person making the video
repeats certain parts of it to drill it into the
audiences mind. This causes the audience to
remember it more.
Disjuncture – This when the meaning of the song
is completely ignored by everyone.
7. Technical aspects of the music video
When creating a music video there are technical
aspects which hold the music video together, they do
this by the use of camera work, Mise en scene,
editing and sound.
Mise en scene – This is the lighting, costume
choice etc.
Editing – This is the special effect what could be
added or cross cut.
Camera work – This is how they move the camera
around the artists, or what camera angels to use.
Sound – This goes back to the beats and lyrics of
the song.
