3. OVERVIEW
• This presentation looks at Canada’s employment and labour market for May 2017. Labour market is one
of the key areas for the economy as jobs drives taxation for the government.

• In May, employment among youth aged 15 to 24 rose by 28,000, the result of full-time
gains, largely in Ontario and British Columbia. This was the first notable increase for youth
since October 2016. The youth unemployment rate was little changed in May at 12.0%, as
more young people participated in the labour market. Compared with 12 months earlier,
youth employment increased by 2.7% (+64,000), the fastest year-over-year growth since
February 2013. This year-over-year gain was mostly in part-time work. Over the same 12-
month period, the youth population declined by 0.9% (-38,000), continuing a downward
trend.

The Ontario Federation of Labour, for instance, praised the introduction of a $15
minimum wage, calling it a “a win for Ontario workers,” while the Keep Ontario
Working Coalition said the new legislation is composed of unproven reforms that
could have serious “unintended consequences,” including job losses and higher
consumer costs.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses was equally put-off by the
overhaul.
“We are shocked and appalled that the government is broadsiding small business
owners with a 32-per-cent increase in the minimum wage within only one-and-a-half
years,” said CFIB director Julie Kwiecinski. “Small businesses, who don’t share the
larger profit margins of big business, will be forced to make difficult choices.”

• May 2016 seen huge drop in employment due to the Fort McMurray fire. Oil production has rebounded
but not oil sector jobs
• Skills jobs led the way in the service sector with 15K. However, IT and culture industries lost about 15K
in terms of jobs
• Public sector jobs like healthcare increase by 15K, but public administration lost 12K in terms of jobs.
• Retail Trade jobs grew in May 2017 due to increases in Ontario
• Ontario has introduced labour reforms which have yet to take effect on the labour market.
