This document discusses gender roles portrayed in cartoons and fairy tales. It finds that cartoons from the 1970s depicted male characters outnumbering female characters almost 4 to 1. Male characters were shown as dominating, powerful and aggressive while female characters lacked traits or personality. Researchers found little has changed, with children still watching cartoons that stereotype gender roles. The document calls on fathers to pay attention to how cartoons portray gender roles and relationships in order to counteract the negative influence of stereotypes on children's socialization.

We need to be aware that The Fairy Tales have a marked influence on the today’s children’s
socialization, teaching patterns of behavior and roles based on gender man and woman. The
treatment received by women in Disney films, is absolutely negative. Women are treated as
secondary or dependent of man and the life of princess is a real disaster until the prince whom
she will marry, and your life will be happily ever appears.
In cartoon characters of year 1970 male outnumbered female cartoon characters in a ratio of
almost four to one! Research presented at (APA) at the 105th Annual Convention of the
American Psychological Association in Chicago reveals that male cartoon characters remain
higher than female cartoon characters almost four to one. The male characters are also being
portrayed as dominating, powerful and aggressive. The female characters have “character” at all.
Cynthia Spicher, BA, and the psychologist Mary Hudak, Phd., Allegheny College found little
change in the gender stereotypes that young minds in the US are spending two to four hours a
2. day watching. Dr. Carol Spicher and Dr. Hudak found that cartoon characters males are not only
prominent female characters, but also represent a wider range of masculine traits. The male
characters were powerful, strong, smart, aggressive, etc. Occasionally there is a female cartoon
character symbolic but she is like lime gelatin and bland.
Fathers needs to consider what is the role of the women in these movies, as a rule should be
submissive, not talking, not educated, always be aware of their physical to please men and most
struggles between them and jealousy of one another are due to physical, rather than by
intellectual ability or level of independence they gain, etc., which is actually what is taught to
children today. That is, if you try to remove all existing prejudices about the traditional roles of
men and women in society and the purpose of this from society is that both the former can play
the same role in this, why from Disney transmit to us other values. These results are consistent
with past research disappointingly shows that the representation of gender roles on television, in
general, has been stereotyped, and that the female characters have remained underrepresented,
say the authors. And even more disappointing, Dr. Hudak added that the cartoons are the
children’s version of what is portrayed in adult dramas at night.
So, will be very important that the children’s fathers checks and pay attention what’s about the
cartoons in the TV that babies are watching. Hope that Disney amend and update the script of
cartoons about the role and gender of the characters.
