This summer series will focus on some of Jesus' most important direct statements. This sermon addresses Jesus' teaching on worry in Matthew 6:25-34 and the key phrase, "Don't be anxious about tomorrow."

Series Intro:
My first Bible was black King James Bible with a zipper. It was a red-letter Bible. Jesus’ words in the gospels, and even his spoken words in Revelation were all in red letters. I believe that John’s gospel was the first gospel I read. After that, I read James, and then I began reading all of the red letters. I was drawn to the spoken words of Jesus. 40 years later I still find myself drawn to the words of Jesus. Some people are Paul junkies. And in our age of specialization, some of you are Romans junkies. Can I get an Amen from my Calvinist brothers today? Me… I’m a Jesus junkie. And this summer, I’m going to feed my addiction and take you on a trip with me. We are going to spend the entire summer looking at key statements by Jesus; statements that address so many of the concerns of today.
Greeting
In the sermon series I preached last summer entitled “Storm Proof Lives”, I preached a sermon entitled “Worry and Worse.” As I planned this series, I wondered whether it was too soon to address this topic again from another scripture. I’d like to see if I’ve made the right decision by asking this question, “How many of you have licked worry and anxiety since last August. Raise your hands.
The Futility of Anxiety and Worry
Matthew 6:25-29
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
The first word of our text is “Therefore.” This word is our rearview mirror. Whenever we see this word, we need to look for a context… to ask the question what’s the therefore there for. The context of our passage culminates in three important statements of Jesus, all of which feature a key comparison.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
23If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24You cannot serve God and money.
Your spiritual heart, your spiritual eyes and your spiritual focus determine the prevailing condition of your life as a Christian. They accurately predict whether your life will be characterized by a calm assurance or chronic worry and anxiety.
Corrie Ten Boom
Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.
2. The Faithlessness and Foolishness of Anxiety and Worry
Matthew 6:30-33
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
