This slide describes the urban rain water harvesting possibility of India in general and the city of Hyderabad in particular.

2. Why harvest rain water?
Cyberabad faces water shortages during
summer seasons.
This situation is going to worsen as more and
more people immigrate to the software hub.
Storing rain water and using it for non-
portable and portable purposes can solve the
problem.

3. How to do it?
 The process is very simple and scalable.
 During rainy season, Cyberabad gets a lot of
rainfall that causes water logging in the streets.
 If there is a system in various building and
individual houses such that this water can be
stored in an tank and used for the water
requirements, it will solve the problem of water
logging as well as water scarcity.

5. This way the water from HMDA will not be
needed and hence the ground water will not
be depleted.
The remaining water can be directly absorbed
by ground by making “Water Soaker” which
will be discussed later.
Water soaker will help in actual storage of
water in ground that can be pumped during
summer season.

7. Thus we can see that we can both fill the tank
at each household with water and at the same
time directly fill the natural earth’s
groundwater storage.
This work can be especially encouraged to be
taken up by large companies(like
Oracle, Microsoft, Wipro etc) as they have
large campuses and buildings. Thus, can act as
a large catchment area.
Subsidies and incentives can be given for the
same and an awareness can be created among
the common public.

8. Dam and lakes(natural tanks)
Storage of rain water in large tanks has been
the culture of Deccan plateau since Ancient
Indian Kingdoms.
There are few examples of successful tank and
dams that have been implemented in India
and will be discussed in the next slide.

The terrain of Tatanagar is similar to Hyderabad.
Jusco has identified a place near the city to have
a large catchment area, it is surrounded by hills
on all sides.
This has been walled and a dam is made to store
water for the people of Tatanagar.

The dam can be constructed to put solar
panels above it, which would both reduce the
evaporation of water due to sunlight and
produce electricity without any need of land.
