Index surged today, Sensex close up 137.38 gains 0.71% and the Nifty close up 44.75 gains 0.78%, as lenders recovered from recent steep losses after the central bank's announcement that it would purchase bonds eased concerns about the value of the sector's debt holdings. Continued buying even in the last hour of trading push the Sensex up. HDFC Bank, BHEL, HDFC, ICICI Bank and SBI are top gainers in the Sensex while on the losing side are Tata Power, Sesa Goa, NTPC, ONGC and HUL.
