1. Fertilization is a result of many membrane fusion events. What are the four membrane fusions
that occur during fertilization? Describe what happens at each event and what happens as a
result. Be sure that they are in the correct timing order! 2. What are the developmental
consequences of polyspermy and what are the mechanisms preventing polyspermy in sea
urchins? 3. What features are typical of mature sperm and mature ovum? How do mature sperm
and ova differ among species? 4. For many sea urchin species there are three species-specific
mechanisms that occur during fertilization to ensure that sperm fertilizes eggs of the same
species. Describe these events (be sure to include experimental data that supports the specificity
of these events when available).
