2. Brigham Young Says, “You educate a man; you
educate a man. You educate a woman; you
educate a generation.”
The basic unit of society is a woman. As woman makes a family, family
makes a home and homes make a society. So we should never think that
a society would come into existence without the contribution of women.
We all know that without education, no development is possible. Here
we have forgotten that the very first and best school of a child is its
mother’s lap. A good healthy society doesn’t automatically emerge on its
own and stands firm but it needs to be emerged and for its emergence
women play a pivotal role. From behavioural to health education women
have their hands in. it’s a woman who teaches how to behave, how to
speak and how to deal with different classes of people. These all are the
basic fundamentals of a good society and women are the main
contributors in building up a strong society.
3. Man considers woman to be frail and weak by nature.
But man forgets that a woman is made so, so to play a specific fro in
nature which a man cannot play, that is the role of the mother. In
intelligence both are equal. Man is aggressive and emotional. A woman
is patient, calm and receptive. She can bear more pain and has more
tolerance than a man. She is stronger in conviction and in perseverance.
Yet women all over the world are playing a secondary role only. The
position in India is no different. Women were glorified in epics and
puranas, for their service to their men. Serving a father first, secondly a
husband, and later serving her children and grandchildren, had been her
lot. Puranas mention the names of Seeta, Savitri and Anusuya and
glorify them for their devote service to their husbands. They even say
that a woman can easily get salvation by serving her husband.
4. After Independence the Constitution of India gave equal rights to
men and women in all walks of life. But even today one cannot say
that all women in India enjoy equal rights with men in all matters.
There are many reasons for this;
(1) The customs and traditions prevalent for centuries,
(2) The high percentage of illiteracy among women,
(3) Ignorance of their rights,
(4) Patriarchal Society,
(5) Economic system,
(6) Acceptance of the theory of Karma or fatalism,
(7) Unchecked male domination in all walks of life.
5. Thus we can summarize the status of women in different ages
as follows:
1. Women in Vedic age were respected, had freedom to choose to lead a family life or
Brahmavadinas . This is the golden period for women in India.
2.There were dual thoughts in smritis age at certain places they talked in the praise of
women and at others against their freedom.
3.Women were given proper education and freedom during epic age. And the status of
women was same as in the Vedic era.
4.During Buddhist age female education was encouraged. It was possible that women
could become missionaries and they could remain unmarried.
5.Medieval period is the darkest in the history of Indian women in general. Exploitation
of women in the form of early marriage, female infanticide enforced
widowhood etc. caused several detrimental effects of women.
6. 6. During British period many Indian reformers along with the help of British
government, introduced value systems to eradicate many social evils and thus helped in
changing the attitude towards the women.
7. With independence, the constitution of India has brought women on par with men, by
eliminating sex discrimination. Education to all women enhanced the status of women.
8. Education and employment among the women is encouraged. Present situation is that
most of the women are having job outside the house which leads to dual
responsibilities.
We saw that how slowly the role of Indian women in the
society changed. Previously females never got stressed up.
The reason was the lifestyle, education and thinking.
