8. A. The BIBLE as the “BOOK of Books”
1. the word “bible”
2. the bible “library”
B. The BIBLE as SCRIPTURE
1. the word “scripture”
2. from lived faith-experiences
and sacred traditions to
written record
C. The BIBLE as consisting of OLD and
NEW TESTAMENT (Covenant)
1. God’s covenant with Israel
2. God’s covenant with us in Christ
9. Comes from the Latin
word “Biblia” which means
BOOK (singular) and this
Latin word in turn is derived
from the Greek word
“Biblia” which means BOOKS
(plural)
.
10. From the fact that the word
“Bible” means both book
and books, we can conclude
that the bible is one book
composed of many books or
different writings, some
of them, in fact, do not
amount to even a booklet.
This we discovered during
the Bible Scanning activity.
11. Since the Bible is a
collection of many books
or writings, to what can
we compare it?
We can compare it to a
“LIBRARY” – we can even call
the Bible a library because
it is a collection of many
books or different writings.
12. The Bible were written in
many different literary forms
and styles: some are
narrative in character, others
are
in poetic form and style,
some books contain prayers,
others books contain laws
and regulations.

16. What other name of the Bible do you
know?
We also call Bible “the Scriptures”
or “Sacred Scripture” or “Holy Writ”
The word “Scripture” is derived from a Latin
word
“Scriptura” which means “Writing” or
“something written”
To understand the meaning of the term,
we ask the question: “What was written
down?”
17. What the sacred writer put into
writing was certainly
and ultimately the Word of God,
what God inspired him
to write. But more immediately
and directly he recorded
the faith-experiences of the
community which had been
handed down from generation
to generation by word of mouth.
18. The sacred writers were men (and
women) of the community.
They put into writing what the
community believed and they did
this for the benefit of the community.
They wrote from “faith to faith.”
They inherited the faith of the
community and put it into writing in
order to build up, strengthen and
enrich the community’s faith.
