NICU
Each year more than 850 babies are admitted to their two neonatal units, making Imperial one of the
largest neonatal services in the UK. Imperial provide care for extremely pre-term babies (less than 27
weeks’ gestation) and those with complex medical needs at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in the
neonatal intensive care unit. More mature babies born above 27 weeks’ gestation are cared for at St Mary’s
Hospital in our local neonatal unit. The neonatal Unit at Queen Charlottes and Chelsea Hospital is a 24
bedded level 3 neonatal intensive unit and the neonatal Unit at St Mary’s Hospital is a 17 bedded level 2
unit.
PICU
The paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) incorporates eight intensive care beds and a two-bed high
dependency unit. The unit cares for children with life threatening conditions, including severe infections
such as pneumonia and meningitis, severe trauma, airway problems, neurological conditions and those
who have undergone surgery. Every year around 400 critically ill children are admitted to the unit. Around
30 per cent come from the local North West London catchment area; the remainder are transferred by the
Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS) from hospitals across London and the home counties. The unit
has excellent clinical outcomes and is highly regarded internationally for its pioneering work in the field of
paediatric sepsis.
2. Haematology
Haematology Unit at the Hammersmith Hospital, which is one of the UK’s leading specialist haematology
centres
This unit offers a wide range of haematology experience and runs one of the largest stem cell transplant
programmes (allogeneic and autologous) in Europe. There are two dedicated haematology/stem cell
transplant in-patient wards (Dacie & Weston). We are also about to launch Ambulatory Care, which will
incorporate Triage & Assessment within the Haematology Day Care unit, and there are general
haematology in-patient beds attached to this unit.
This is the ideal environment for motivated nurses to develop specialist knowledge and skills in caring for
patients with non-malignant and malignant haematological conditions, which include leukaemia,
lymphoma, multiple myeloma, sickle cell disease and haemophilia.
Ideally, we are seeking to recruit registered nurses with at least 6 months general haematology/oncology
experience or who have experience in an acute care setting. You should also be certified as competent to
administer intravenous medicines. If you do not hold a chemotherapy certificate the relevant training will
be provided. You should have good interpersonal skills and a keen interest in the specialty, which should be
clearly demonstrated in your application and at interview.
Recruitment Process:
1. Send your expression of interest in one of these posts to ABBA.
2. Profco will review your cv.
3. If you are shortlisted you will be contacted by Profco for an initial pre screening interview by
telephone or SKYPE where you will be asked some clinical questions related to your specialty.
4. Once you pass this interview you will be sent an application pack to complete.
5. On receipt of the completed application forms you will be given a learning pack.
6. You will have a second pre screening interview. During this interview you need to demonstrate
that you have studied the material we gave you in the learning pack. This interview is to prepare
you for final interview with Imperial representatives.
7. You will be given a drug calculation test online
8. If you pass the above you will be invited for final interview
Once you pass the final interview
9. NMC is the nursing licensing authority in the UK. NMC will only issue you with an application form
to apply once you submit a passed IELTS result. You need to pass the academic IELTS test within six
weeks of your employment offer. Your offer is subject to passing IELTS .
You must complete the academic version of the IELTS test and achieve
At least 7.0 in the listening and reading sections
At least 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections
At least 7.0 (out of a possible 9) overall
3. NMC will not accept applicants who score lower than this standard
10. ABBA will assist you with all aspects of preparing your NMC application and Profco will follow up
on your application once you submit your file.
11. We undertake the recruitment checks. You will need to provide police clearances from every
country you have lived or worked since you were 18 years of age. We will take up references with
your permission from every employment for the past five years or since you graduated. We will do
verify your qualifications and your licences.
12. Once the above are cleared by the hiring manager you will have to do a medical for the hospital
and for your visa for the UK.
13. Once you have your NMC decision letter you will be ready to travel.

4. Salary
Allocating posts to pay bands
Staff are placed in one of nine pay bands on the basis of their knowledge, responsibility, skills and
effort needed for the job. The assessment of each post, using the Job Evaluation Scheme (JES),
determines the correct pay band for each post, and as a result, the correct basic pay. Within each
pay band, there are a number of pay points. As staff successfully develop their skills and
knowledge, they progress in annual increments up to the maximum of their pay band, At two
defined "gateway points" on each pay band, pay progression is based on them demonstrating the
applied knowledge and skills for that job.

5. Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) - What the NMC does?
The core function of the NMC is to establish and improve standards of nursing and midwifery care in order
to serve and protect the public. Their key tasks are to:
maintain a register listing all nurses and midwives;
set standards and guidelines for nursing and midwifery conduct, performance and ethics;
provide advice for registrants on professional standards;
quality assure nursing and midwifery education;
set standards and provide guidance for local supervising authorities for midwives;
consider allegations of misconduct, lack of competence or unfitness to practise due to ill health.
To work in the UK all nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses must register with
the NMC. Practitioners have to renew their registration every three years.

Note: All applicants will be required to undertake 20 days Protected Learning Time (PLT) and a programme
of supervised practice (ONP) for a minimum of three months. The ONP is organized and paid for by
Imperial. You will attend some University lectures at few days during the three months adaptation period
and the Clinical Education Team at Imperial who are accredited by the University will provide some of the
20 days ONP on site at the hospitals.
Once you have completed this programme you will be registered ( licensed) as a registered nurse
During your adaptation and ONP period you will be paid Band 3. Once you are registered you will be paid
at Band 5.
You will be allowed to work on your days off after one month so you can support your finances.
Housing?
Imperial College Health care NHS Trust will provide the first month free. This is contingent upon completing
one year with the Trust, If for any reason you leave within one year you would have to pay this back .
Imperial have accommodation at all hospital sites. The costs varies dependant on the location, size of the
unit etc but the range is from £445 -£ 767.01 per calendar month.
You will need to pay one month deposit generally they take this payment from overseas nurses once you
have had your first pay check. The second month you can work on your days off for the Hospital Bank. Your
salary is paid monthly but the bank shifts are paid weekly so you can pay your deposit with your first pay
check keep some money to live on and then you can work extra to have more money to live on during
month two. Month three will be easier but you will still be on Band 3 salary so you will most likely work a
6. lot of your days off. Once you have completed your adaptation period and you are registered you will be
paid Band 5. We see most overseas nurses tend to work a lot of their days off to supplement their income.
Do I get a free flight?

How long do I have to commit to?
We recruit to "perm" posts so a minimum of one year is expected. However all posts are
permanent posts so you can stay as long as you want

You will go on your own first. Once you have your NMC registration you would be able to afford for your
family to join you. All at your own cost.
Do I have to pay for medical care?
You are entitled to NHS treatment, you will be able to use a GP (doctor) and other GP services (eg visiting a
clinic) for free. You will also be able to get treatment in a hospital (both emergency and non-emergency).
7. Do you provide a meet and greet service?
Yes every candidate is offered a meet and greet service. This can be by a profco representative.
We meet you at the airport and provide free transport to take you to your accommodation and settle you in.
