1. SUBTRACTION
Basic Concept of Subtraction
Subtraction means is take away or minus. Here we have a grup of fie balloons. Let us take
away one balloon. As we take away one balloon, we need to subtract one from five. So
the number of remaining balloo is four. We are actually subracting one from five that is
five minus one equal to four. The minus sign is a symbol used for denoting subtraction and
the answer obtained is called the difference.
Subtraction using a Number Line
We can also subtract usinng number line. For example to find the difference between six
and three. We start at six that the bigger number and jummp three number to tthe left.
The number that we get is three which is the answer. Therefor, the difference of six and
three is three.
Vertical Subtraction with Borrowing
I have thirty four sweets , I eats sixteen of them. How many sweets are left ? so, we are
doing thirty four minus sixteen. The first past we need to do is four minus six. Howver we
can’t do that because sour is to small to take away six of it. So we’re going to borrow from
number fourties next to the neighbor which us the three. Because we’re oing to borrow
one from the three, we need to erros it out and replace it with the two. And now we want
to give the one we’ve borrowed to our four, it actually borrowed one tens, an we add the
ten to four we get fourteen and now we can do our calculation. So, fourteen minus six
equal eight and two minus one equal one. So , thirty four minus sixteen is equal eighteen.
