2. Introduction
Based in Harlem, the Opportunity Charter School uses
evidence-based academic models to effectively teach
students from all different backgrounds, including
young people with learning disabilities. The school,
which opened its doors in 2004, has received industry
recognition and media attention for its success in
helping students become fully engaged members of
their communities. In support of its mission,
Opportunity Charter School maintains partnerships
with local organizations, including The Children’s Aid
Society (CAS).
3. About CAS
In the mid 1980s, CAS formed a grassroots initiative
with Dr. Michael A. Carrera that addressed teenage
pregnancy rates by empowering young people to
develop personal goals and pursue academic and
career objectives, thus building better futures for
themselves. Today, the Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy
Prevention program at CAS organizes in-school
education and guidance and after-school youth
development programs for children aged 11 and older.
4. Conclusion
In the winter of 2013-2014, Dr. Carrera addressed some
60 AmeriCorps members hosted by CAS. Sharing his
expertise in positive youth development and practices,
he encouraged these young people to promote CAS’
programs and projects in early literacy education,
after-school enrichment, college readiness training,
and other areas.
