Danish artists- Lili Elbe and Gerda
Wegener. It traces their relationship and
Elbe’s sex reassignment surgery
• This constructs the audience by gaining
their attention through showing the effects
of a man changing their gender
• This changes their relationship as well as
their whole life
• Butler’s model sees identity as not
necessarily expressing some authentic
inner core self. Gender is not the cause but
instead is the effect of our performances
• This can be applied to the film because it
shows that a man does not have to follow
the roles of a man and they can become a
girl if they want
