3. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Can’t Stop
• Romanek uses Disjuncture in this particular video
which means that the images don’t illustrate the lyrics.
This music video is not a narrative. It cuts to the beat
which creates an urgency to it all, complimenting the
song title “Can’t Sop”. Based on the bizarre
photographic expedition of Erwin Wurm “One Minute
Sculptures”. However this bizarreness merits its
repeating viewing because you don’t get it the first
meaning you will want to watch it again.
• The video builds a picture of the performers as a
group of friends larking around which fits with the
stars image of being “unconventional”.
5. Fat boy Slim – Praise You
• Jonze is unusual in his direction of the music
video “Praise you” in that the whole video is
all one take.
• There is no performance element and seems
to include members of the general public.
• The video diary feel gives the video an
authenticity and uniqueness.
• Jonze himself also starred in the music video
which is unusual for directors to do.
7. Bjork- Human Behavior
• Michel Gondry uses amplification when directing
the video “ Human Behavior”
• He takes the idea of human behavior being weird
and wacky and inverts this making the animals
bigger then humans.
• He twists the traditional fairy tail making it more
of a nightmare. Often drawing on literary
metaphors.
• There is significant use of CGI.
• Unusual video but is a narrative and tells a story.
9. Madonna- Frozen
• Monochrome color scheme incorporated in
Frozen which is a common feature throughout
Cunningham’s work.
• The imagery of the crow and the black dog are
symbolic in the video as they are omens of death
• Disco juncture again used with no direct
connection with the visuals and lyrics however
the use of Madonna's lip syncing gives the effect
as if she is trying to relay a message to someone.
11. Jamiroqaui- Virtual Insanity
• Glazer deliberately contrast the white room in
which the music video is set to the dark clothes
of Jay Kay.
• Disjuncture with the lyrics not relating the the
visuals of the music video, however the tittle
illustrates the unusual activity of the moving
furniture and random appearances.
• Glazer has several close up shots of the artist
which is a technique characteristic of his directing
style
