3. Impressive Young Businessman
A young businessman had just started his own firm. He rented a beautiful office
and had it lavishly furnished.
One day, while he was sitting at his office desk, he saw a man come into the
outer office. Wanting to impress the stranger, he picked up his phone and
pretended he had a big deal working. After some time, he hung up and asked
the visitor, “Can I help you?”
“Yeah, I’ve come to activate your phone lines,” the man replied.
Reflection
One who pretends or is dishonest will eventually be found out. Beware of the Ego
in us. The egoistic person and the liar will meet with suffering finally. Honesty is
the best policy.
4. Wrong Livelihood
Lim : My uncle makes a lot of money in the gambling den.
Tan : What special system does he use?
Lim : Whenever there is a raid by the police,
he grabs all the money and hides it.
Tan : But if there are no raids by the police?
Lim : Then my uncle calls them.
Reflection
Scoundrels and immoral people resort to all ways for material gain.
People who commit unwholesome actions of the mind, speech and body
will eventually face painful consequences in this and future lives.
Tan:
Lim:
5. Simple Operation
A man was wheeling himself
frantically down the hall of the
hospital in his wheelchair,
just before his operation.
An attendant stopped him and asked,
“What’s the matter?”
The frightened man said, “I heard the
nurse in the operation theatre say,
‘It’s a very simple operation, don’t
worry. I am sure it will be all right.’ ”
“The nurse was just trying to
reassure you. Why are you so
frightened?” the attendant asked.
“The nurse was not talking to me.
She was talking to the surgeon!”
Reflection Fear or worry arises due to
a thinking mind that lacks wisdom.
It can arise because of ignorance, a
reaction to someone’s speech or action,
when the mind dwells in the past or
future and when wrong assumptions are
made.

6. No Respect
The boss of a company used to throw his
weight around. He often nagged his staff
members unreasonably and told them that
they must show more respect for him.
One morning he brought a
sign that read “ I AM THE BOSS ”.
He hung it on his office door.
Later that day when he returned from his
lunch break, he found that someone had
taped a note to the sign on his office door.
The note said: “YOUR WIFE CALLED.
SHE WANTS HER SIGN BACK.”
Reflection
How many hen-pecked husbands become
nasty bosses in their places of work
treating their subordinates in most
unreasonable ways?
One who practices Dhamma well will have
a good character and moral conduct.
He will be well-liked by many.

7. A Better Job
A little girl climbed into her grandfather’s lap and studied his white, balding head.
She ran her fingers along the deep wrinkles and felt
the old man’s rough face and neck.
“Did God make you?” the little girl asked.
“Yes,” the grandfather replied.
“Did God make me too?” she asked.
“Of course darling,” the old man replied.
“Well,” the little girl shrugged, feeling the smoothness of her face, “don’t you think
He’s doing a better job now than He used to?”
Reflection
Little children can pose questions which can be quite tricky. Beware!
Parents and grandparents need to equip themselves well with proper knowledge so
that they can impart clear and wise education to the young.

8. “I’d do Anything …”
A sexy young lady undergraduate entered a young professor’s office.
She closed the door and knelt down pleadingly.
“I would do anything to pass this exam,” she pleaded. She then leant closer
to him, flipped back her hair, gazed sexily into his eyes. “I mean …” she
whispered, “ …I would do … anything.”
“Anything?” the professor returned her gaze.
“Yes, absolutely anything,” she said sexily.
The professor whispered to her, “Go back and study your lecture notes.”
Reflection
Never resort to immoral behavior to try to achieve your goal. Honest hard
work is the only way. Sexual misconduct is breaking a moral precept.

9. One Fine Day
A husband and wife were returning home
by bus after their weekly marketing. The
husband lighted a cigarette and started
puffing away.
Wife : Hey, didn’t the doctor advise
you to stop smoking months ago?
Husband : Indeed he did, darling. And I
promised the doctor I will quit smoking
one fine day.
Wife : It’s been three months
already. Hasn’t that fine day arrived?
Husband : Ah … every time I decide to
quit when the fine day comes, the day
immediately turns lousy!
Reflection
One who is addicted to smoking,
drinking and drug taking must
seriously reflect on the painful
suffering he will face.
It takes a strong will power to give up
these dangerous bad habits.

10. Age Secret
A woman went to a gambling casino for the first time. At a roulette table,
she said, “I really have no idea what number I should bet on.”
A young handsome man nearby suggested that she betted on a number
corresponding to her age. The woman smiled at the man and she put her
money on the number ‘24’. The wheel of the roulette was spun and the
number ‘42’ came up. The smile drifted from the woman’s face and she
fainted.
Reflection
The wise ones tell us that ‘Honesty is the best policy.’
Ignorant ones cannot SEE the reality of birth, ageing, sickness and death. In
their minds they cannot embrace the fact of ageing. They resort to cosmetic
ways to stay ‘young.’
11. The Mechanic
A dentist brought his new car to a mechanic for repair. After an hour’s work, the
mechanic told the dentist that the charge was RM 200.
“What? RM 200 for just an hour’s work?” the dentist barked.
The mechanic said calmly, “You charge RM 200 for just 20 minutes of dental
work and you are dealing with the same old human teeth. You know, I have to
learn to repair 3 to 5 new car models every year!
Reflection
The ordinary worker with little education may be smarter or more ‘cunningly
unscrupulous’ than you ever expect. He can cleverly rationalize all his actions.
As to the quality of morality and wisdom, this has to be cultivated by all –
‘educated or uneducated’.
12. The Importance of Exercise
The doctor advised Ah Kow on the
importance of exercise for good health.
Ah Kow exclaimed, “But Doctor, I play
football and basketball everyday!”
“Oh, that’s good,” the doctor said. “For
how long do you play these games?”
Ah Kow immediately replied, “Until the
battery in my mobile phone dies off!”
Reflection
In a world of high technology, too many
people especially the younger generation
have become addicted to video games on
their hi-tech gadgets. This results in a
lack of physical exercise leading to health
problems.
Education and discipline are very
important to curb this addiction.

Two husbands Russel and Mel bumped into each
other in a huge shopping complex.
Russel : Oh Mel, I am a bit worried. I can’t find
my wife anywhere.
Mel : Gee, I too can’t find mine! How about
we go and look for them together?
Russel : Fine! What does your wife look like?
Mel : Well, she’s sexy-looking – she has long
blond hair, well-tanned, large breasts and she’s
wearing a low-cut pink dress. How about your
wife? How does she look like?
Russel : Forget about my wife. Let us
concentrate on searching for your wife.
Reflection
There are immoral and lustful men who yearn
and desire for sexy and beautiful women even
though they may be married already. Beware of
the danger of sexual misconduct, a breach of a
moral precept.

14. Stressed Out Doctor
There was a doctor who worked for 10
hours a day and he was pretty stressed
out. One day a patient came to consult
him at night about some pains he
experienced in his abdomen area. The
doctor made an examination and then
asked the patient, “When do you
usually experience your
abdominal pains?” The patient replied,
“Oh Doctor, I can’t really tell. The pains
can come at any time.” The doctor then
wrote out a prescription and told the
patient, “It’s very important that you
take the medicine exactly 30 minutes
before you feel the pain.” The patient
was utterly confused.
Reflection
Those stressed out cannot give
good logical advice.
They need sufficient sleep and
rest, so say the Wise.
