World War 1 lasted nearly 4 years, 1914 to 1918, it brought a huge development of war abilities
and weapons. Numerous of countries had been implied in the "Great War", to be exact 32
countries, more than any previous war it involved the government preparing and organizing
troops for active service of the whole nation. The major cause of the four occurring over World
War 1, are Militarism, System of Alliance, Imperialism and Nationalism. Alliances and
Nationalism are the two upmost causes in my opinion. The war had left horrible corollary on the
people who had fought and loved ones who had lost their lives during the war, 16 million those
who served either from a serious injury or a disease. Over all on both civilian and military victims

An example of my argument was seen and heard throughout the whole world and that was
basically the spark that ignites World War 1 and it was the assassination of Archduke Franz

World War One was one of the largest historical events of all time. Different from other wars seen
before, leaders were driven by a "mania to dominate the globe" and were willing to use warfare to
get what they wanted. Five major causes contributed to the beginning of World War One, Militarism,
Nationalism, Alliances, Imperialism and the Assassination of the Archduke. Militarism was the

Franz Ferdinand was next in line to be emperor of Austria–Hungary and was assassinated on June 28
1914. The Archduke was visiting the German Emperor in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Sarajevo. On the car trip home there was an assassination attempt. The attempt failed but a second
attempt was soon made and the Archduke was shot in the neck and consequently died from his
injuries. The assassins were Serbian nationalists who didn't think Bosnia should have been under the
rule of Austria–Hungary. Austria–Hungary blamed Serbia for the assassination and was pushed into
military retaliation. With the support of German Military command, Austria–Hungary sent an
ultimatum (an official letter) to Vienna (the capital of Austria) making a case for war against Serbia.
On July 23 1914 Austria conveyed a 48 hour ultimatum to Belgrade (the capital of Serbia) requesting
Austrian Investigators be appointed to pursue those behind the assassination (Von Hellfeld,2012).
Even though the serbian government fulfilled the request, Serbia's response wasn't enough for the
government in Vienna. On July 28 1914, Austria–Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia mobilized
its army the next day but the Emperor of Russia, Nicholas the second, received and request for it to

The first world war was one of the most brutal and remorseless events in history; 'the global
conflict that defined a century'. Over nine million soldiers and a large amount of innocent
civilians lost their lives. Empires crumbled, revolution engulfed Russia and America rose to
become a dominant world power. Huge armies deployed new weapons of devastating effect from
rifles and pistols to torpedoes and flame throwers. These weapons were used not only in the
trenches but by tanks too. This was an advantage to those who were able to access such machinery
as they could easily launch bullets and missiles at nearby enemy bases. The downfall of the tank
was the fact it was unable to cross the trenches. Tanks were not the only pieces of equipment that
could access this machinery but U boats and planes too. The British carried 'bolt action rifles' in
which fired 15 rounds per minute at a minimum range of 1,400 metres away. This allowed the
British to take out foes at a far greater range. By using machinery in which rules out the need for
getting up close to the enemy was a great advantage during world war one. Soldiers ran from trench
to trench attacking with all that they had. This resulted in a massacre as the soldiers running toward
the trenches were shot down. Machinery such as machine guns and heavy artillery were the
weapons used in the trenches. In modern day society, machine guns are the main weapons used by

The First World War sometimes referred to as the European War was more commonly referred to
as the Great War. So much in the world was changed by this war, so it simply by most known as
the Great War. "It is because no other war until then had had such an impact on the world. It was
the first war to affect all of the major nations of Europe and the world. It took many lives and
changed the lives of millions more." (Rivera, 2014) Some countries do not refer to the war as great
because they lost so much and for them there was nothing great about the war. The war was

transportation. During this war they were being used for dropping bombs and delivering
chemical weapons such as mustard gas. The war affected future generations of people as over
40,000,000 casualties and over 20 million civilians died. By losing sons or husbands, families
would be forced to move and learn a new way of life as the money makers were not around
anymore. For those soldiers that watched their friends die right next to them, they would never be

as Russia ( not Soviet union but during the war it will change ), Britain, Germany, Austria–Hungary,
France and the Ottoman Empire. One of these powers got extremely mad at a smaller country for

The place in between yours and enemy trenches is called no mans land. There was a fungal
infection similar to Athlete's Foot that was called Trench foot and it was a common case.
Soldiers in trenches were almost always under constant bombardment from artillery and a mental
illness was discovered and was called Shell Shock but later renamed Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder. Many people were shoot because military officers thought they were trying to get out
of the war. People who actually tried to get out of the war were called deserters. You defended in
your trench because it gave you cover. When you attacked you had to do "go over the top" which
meant you had to climb out of the safety of the trench into no mans land to almost certainly get
shot of exploded or shredded by shrapnel. While the horrors of enemy gunfire were real the reality
of trench life was worse. Each side of the war had different weapon, styles of trenches, and
materials such as Uniforms and helmets. One of my main focuses in this paragraph is helmets. For
about a year of war French and Britain did not have steel helmets while the Germans did. This
turned out to be a huge difference maker in the front lines. You see parts of your head stuck out of
the trench and enemy snipers could kill you rather easily. A metal helmet could offer more protection
