HISTORY:
The National Wound Care Programme was
developed in July 2009. The objective of
this programme os to identify issues and
problems regarding wound care in Malaysia
and to formulate measures to improve the
standard and quality of wound care in our
country. The pilot project on wound care
surveillance involving 7 hospitals was also
conducted in 2009. In 2011 a Director
General Circular on Hospital Wound care
Committee and Wound Care Team
Implementation was released.

FUNCTIONS:
The Wound Care Programme is a
multidisciplinary approach to provide
systematic, standard and quality wound
care in healthcare facilities. The main
objective of the program is to facilitate
patient-centered care through holistic
approach and optimize financial and
human resources in wound care service. It
also meant to improve functional outcome
by reducing morbidities and mortalities
hence improving patient’s satisfaction.

the National Wound Care Committee
throughout the year 2016:

The National Wound Care Committee
meeting was held two times in 2016, which
was on 4th April and 12th October, 2016. The
agenda of the meeting discussed were
related to the wound care activities including
surveillance activity which was conducted in
15 Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals.
In addition, a series of meetings were held
for the production of wound care training
module.

Edition-2016)

The Wound Care Surveillance Manual was
produced to provide guidance to hospitals
that carry out surveillance charging wound
care procedures and reporting methods.
The Wound Care Training Module provides
as a standard guidelines for healthcare
professionals as well as for training
purposes to train and educate their staff in
managing wounds more effectively and
comprehensively, with good clinical
outcome and minimal complications.

The wound care surveillance activity
provide systematic, standardized and high
quality wound care in healthcare facilities
hence improving patient’s functional
outcome and reducing healthcare cost. It is
carried out throughout the year, while
reporting are done twice a year (Jan - June
and Jan-December) which involves 15
Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals.
The objectives of this surveillance activity
are;
a. to estimate the total burden of wound
managed by wound care team in the
selected MOH hospitals.
b. to determine the characteristic of wound
(types of wound, dressing procedures
and materials used).
c. to provide a standardized tool for
hospitals to identify targets for quality
improvement.

Training, Education and Awareness
Campaign related to Wound Care which was
carried out in 2016 were as follows;
a. Wound Care Training Of Trainers (TOT)
b. Wound Care Surveillance Workshop
c. 3rd
National Wound Care Conference
d. Wound Care Seminar (4 Zone)
Wound Care Training of Trainers (TOT) was
held on 5th & 6th April, 2016 at Specialist
Complex & Ambulatory Care Centre (SACC)
Hospital Kuala Lumpur. It was attended by
28 national wound care committee members
and was given by Dr. Ian Gordon, Clinical
Professor of Surgery from University of
California (Director Wound Care UCI
Medical Center). The content of the
workshop is specific to diabetic foot ulcers
and venous leg ulcers.
Apart from lectures, workshops also
include hands-on activities and live case
studies with clinic patients.

Wound care surveillance workshop was
held on 23rd May, 2016 at Seminar Room,
Cyberjaya University Collage of Medical
Sciences (CUCMS). The workshop was
attended by the Wound Care Hospital
Coordinator involved. The aim of the
workshop are;
a. to give exposure regarding the new
Wound Care Surveillance Manual.
b. strengthening the knowledge regarding
proper filling and reporting of
surveillance wound care data.

The National Wound Care Commitee has
successfully organized the 3rd National
Wound Care Conference on 24th–25th
May, 2016 in CUCMS with the theme of
“From Science to Practice”. It was launced
by the Deputy Director Medical Care
Quality Section, Medical Development
Division, MOH on behalf of the Deputy
Director General of Health (Medical
Program).

The Conference was attended by 429
participants comprising of health personel
of government and private healthcare
throughout Malaysia. The objective of this
National Wound Care Conference is to
increase knowledge among healthcare
workers in wound care management and to
bring new updates and recent advances in
wound care management.

In addition, pre-conference workshop was
held on 23rd May 2016 and was attended
by 100 participants. Talk and hands-on
practical session were carried out during
the pre-conference workshop.
In 2016, Wound Care Seminar was
successfully held in four zones.The
objectives of the seminar were to raise the
awareness and strengthening the
knowledge regarding wound care
management among the healthcare
workers.
