Project: the regeneration of one of the many colonial houses in Bangalore, changing its function to one that
would better suit the community around it. This house is situated on a bustling street intersection near
commercial street, making it a prime location for a public building-an art gallery which also houses workshop
spaces.

                                                                                                                Existing house

Section AA Front elevation Section BB

We were required to first measure draw the existing structure before the design
process began . This helped understand the building in its entirety.

The north elevation of the house is designed with a very contemporary approach whereas the house when viewed from the front still retains most of its
existing character. Retaining the three staggering walls that are visible from the front enhances this to a large extent. All additions in design are kept
subtle so as not to disturb the aesthetics and sculpture of the house .The jack arches are still kept intact in the front half of the house. A platform at a
height of 1.0m from the ground extends out from the house onto the road announcing the site. This serves as a boundary and buffer between the outside
and the inside, making the site interactive with the public. The still water body introduced serves as a foreground and introduces a certain sense of calm .
The entrance to the gallery is now from the north . Four shops open out onto the road. The plan has been stretched to make it more cruciform to
accommodate a café at one end and a display at the other. Workshop spaces are introduced on the first floor that rises up to a height of 1 ½ times the
height of the house from the ground, which are treated with glass and steel frames as compared to the rustic feel of the house.

     Proposed metro station

A tunnel is proposed to be built over the track and its
roof has been treated as a recreational green
promenade for the public. This space also serves as the
main pedestrian entry into the site. The tunnel buffers
the noise from the train so it does not interfere with
activities on site. The promenade flows into the retail
market space which is designed as leveled platforms.

            model for the project.
Documentation of world heritage site- Pattadakal
This project carried out from November 1st 2010 to March 31st 2011,was a joint collaboration between CCS-CEPT University and
Archaeological Survey of India. I joined the team to document the Pattadakal temples, wherein the team was responsible to measure
draw each temple and prepare site drawings as dummies which were later prepared on ACAD format for final presentation. This work
is of importance as a record for the ASI archives.

Through this process, one lesson that was constantly reiterated was that in design, the experience is what is supreme. The
methodology applied helped relate part to whole and whole to part, to get an overall perspective of the architecture.
Whether its stone resting on stone , with watertight , mortar less joints designed with such precision, or the power that symmetry and
repetition held on the architecture, these temples still tell the story completely.
Daily log of site work
Because of copyright clauses of the ASI I do
not have the permission to display the final
ACAD drawings as yet , but these are some
sketches and notes that were made on site.

                                  riverfront experience structure
This was a project a classmate and I took up in college, during our
annual exhibition,2008.We were to design and execute the installation
of an exhibition structure on the terrace of our department . The
challenge was limited space and a tight budget. Materials we chose
were bamboo, concrete blocks, sand, cloth, and tarpaulin. Keeping in
mind the flow of people, the space was designed as a series of L shaped
units, thus giving each student two display surfaces and also keeping the
display off the main circulation.

Canvas
Sock Puppets we made on a weekend

when they made it easy to believe that “in the beginning of time, the skies were filled with flying elephants.”
Since the last four years, and fortunately while in college, I have had the opportunity of working with kids in and around the
neighbourhood. We sketched, coloured, painted, created , played, ate and danced.
For me it was learning all the way , and sometimes (most actually), they were an escape.

  • 20. Documentation of world heritage site- Pattadakal This project carried out from November 1st 2010 to March 31st 2011,was a joint collaboration between CCS-CEPT University and Archaeological Survey of India. I joined the team to document the Pattadakal temples, wherein the team was responsible to measure draw each temple and prepare site drawings as dummies which were later prepared on ACAD format for final presentation. This work is of importance as a record for the ASI archives. Through this process, one lesson that was constantly reiterated was that in design, the experience is what is supreme. The methodology applied helped relate part to whole and whole to part, to get an overall perspective of the architecture. Whether its stone resting on stone , with watertight , mortar less joints designed with such precision, or the power that symmetry and repetition held on the architecture, these temples still tell the story completely.
  • 21. Daily log of site work Because of copyright clauses of the ASI I do not have the permission to display the final ACAD drawings as yet , but these are some sketches and notes that were made on site.

  • 23. This was a project a classmate and I took up in college, during our annual exhibition,2008.We were to design and execute the installation of an exhibition structure on the terrace of our department . The challenge was limited space and a tight budget. Materials we chose were bamboo, concrete blocks, sand, cloth, and tarpaulin. Keeping in mind the flow of people, the space was designed as a series of L shaped units, thus giving each student two display surfaces and also keeping the display off the main circulation.

For me it was learning all the way , and sometimes (most actually), they were an escape.
