Architecture on international level.
ABC recently won a scholarship worth 1 lakh from Saint Gobian
It was granted after a nationwide completion on sustainable
proposals made by inspiring entrepreneurs all over the country.
Kankana N Dev made a presentation on a proposal called DEW
(Darang Eco Workshop Mangoldai, Assam.
This workshop is used to treat bamboo and make bamboo portable
furniture. One of such initiative was to provide bamboo light weight
furniture to Tata Institute of Social Science Office in Guwahati Campus,
Portable furniture and architecture is one of our unique expertise and we
are working on it to export out of Assam.
FARM HOUSE IN NOIDA:
The requirement of the client was to build a temporary structure
which can be used as a farm house in outskirts of Noida in a SEZ
area. The plots are allotted for the purpose of farm houses near the
river but the construction has to be in temporary in nature.
Therefore many have used metal hollow section along with
corrugated sheets to make a building
envelope but that it not just unsustainable but
create lot of heat in already worse climate.
Here we provided a complete bamboo
structure with all the load calculation. The
looks just another conventional RCC or load
bearing structure but is crafted with Bamboo
LOUNGE AT JIM’S RETREAT:
This project is one of the first initiatives in
proposing a portable bamboo structure.
Since the design brief was to construct a
open bamboo structure mostly used for the
gatherings for the tourists and camps visiting
The Jim Corbett national Park. The budget
was tight and we had to give a structural
consultancy to the already designed form.
We proposed to give joinery details in such a
way that the whole structure can be
assembled on site by just nut bolting to save the execution time.
We are now also capable of manufacturing this portable architecture in our workshop in
Darang called DEW. Here we have sate of art machineries required to treat bamboo to last
for 50 years and work on the joinery of bamboo. Such portable kit of pre designed
structures can be transported to the site, ready to assemble. Our research on bamboo in
India and the challenges in executing bamboo architecture in comparison with other
Southeast Asian countries have brought us to this unique solution which is also very
affordable and solves various other transportation problems. We as a team were also
involved in training unemployed youth in northeast in this type of construction system by
conducting bamboo workshops.
WORKSHOPS CONDUCTED IN NORTHEAST INDIA:
BAMBOO WORKSHOP, GANGTOK, SIKKIM: 9TH TO 14TH MAY 2011
Conducted by department of Handloom and
Handicrafts, Gangtok, Sikkim workshop was
intended to re introduce bamboo as a
structural material in construction. Our target
group was young unemployed youth and the
enthusiast architectural students..
This picture shows a simple shed constructed
by the participants using the modern
technique of nut bolting unlike traditional
tying of bamboo to achieve strong joints.
BAMBOO WORKSHOP, SHILLONG, MEGHALAYA: 20TH JULY TO 30TH JULY 2011
After the success in Sikkim the Forest depart of Meghalaya invited
us to conduct a similar workshop in Shillong. The venue was Lady
Hydari Park which is a hangout place for tourist and local people in
the central city.
Even this workshop saw participants coming from all over the
country from different backgrounds. Some were govt employees,
unemployed youths, students of Architecture and even architects
practicing vernacular stuff in Haryana.
We also gave a presentation on Bamboo as a resource in Gulabrao Devkar Architecture
College, Jalgaon, Maharashtra.
SDPS COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE: 28TH MARCH TO 3RD APRIL 2013
There is no course or institution to give formal training on bamboo architecture in India
and now that many young architects and students are interested in Bamboo Architecture
we conduct bamboo workshops to introduce
them to bamboo as a construction material
giving them an opportunity and confidence
to use bamboo as a building material but
with students of architecture, it is not
enough to just understand the construction
technology but to study the material itself
with respect to its structural properties
through some experiments and evolve the
innovative and site specific technology. We
called this a intuitive design process
involving study of space grammar and
Apart from delivering our consultancy for bamboo Architecture and Interior Design, we are
promoting bamboo in a unique way by publishing a newsletter called:
THE BAMBOO PROPHECY
The Bamboo Prophecy is a newsletter published by ABC since 2011
to promote bamboo by sharing success stories of other
entrepreneurs in bamboo and prophesying new opportunities in
Bamboo sector. Our latest issue was published in the World
Bamboo Congress 2012 hosted at Antwerp, Belgium.
It talks about the Bamboo practices in India and abroad, scope and
opportunities in this upcoming trend and advertises the small
entrepreneurs who are struggling to make it big. This was
appreciated on the event of World Bamboo Congress by the Director
and now we have offers of publishing it on their web site.
