• Race relations have deteriorated
• Prejudice towards ethnic minorities is on the rise
• Groups such as EDL and the BNP are exploiting the
situation
ARRESTS AND CHARGES
• Around 3100 people were arrested
• Over 1100 had appeared in court
• Courts advised to deal harshly with offences committed during
the disturbances
EXAMPLES OF HARSH SENTENCES
• A woman who had not taken part in the riots received
five months for receiving a pair of stolen shorts
• For example two men who promoted riots via
Facebook were promoted riots via Facebook were
sentenced to four years in a Young Offender
Institution
COSTS OF THE RIOTS
• Damage to shops and homes

• Government forced to increase funding to Tottenham
Borough
• Cost the taxpayer £300million
• Led to at least 4000 claims for damage
