Acid attacks and wife burnings are common forms of violence against women in some Muslim-majority countries. Victims are often poor women who have little voice or power in their societies. Perpetrators are rarely prosecuted. One activist in Pakistan has documented over 7,800 cases of acid attacks and burnings against women in one area alone since 1994, but only 2% of perpetrators were convicted. Because women have low social status, their attackers face little consequences. The violence has become normalized.
