- Stephen - The mutual fund, an accessible investment vehicle for over half of Americans, has a rich history of innovation. Currently mutual funds total net assets at at 15.7 billion dollars. ETFs, launched first in Canada, and then created in the US is 1993 represent just under 2 billion in assets. ETFs over the last few years have seen a meteoric rise in popularity and breadth of product.
- Stephen - US Expemptive Relief approvals have shown steady progress in providing investors with access to product that provides access to assets for all aspects of a clients portfolio. In November of 2014, Eaton Vance was given preliminary approval for the first Exchange-Traded Managed Fund. Industry branded NextShares, final approval for NextShares was granted in December 2014. NextShares are an exchange-traded product
- Stephen - The rise in ETFs at just under 2 billion is most impressive over the last 6 years. The low cost structure, the efficiency of the exchange-traded process and the tax advantages have not been lost on investors. ETF providers have responded with over 2000 different funds representing many different asset classes, exposures, instruments, and tilts. ETFs have even looked to “go active”. Although the number of funds have risen over the last few years the total assets are still less than 1% of the ETF market. The big challenge for active ETFs is that they need to disclose their portfolio daily. This disclosure is often a challenge for the most successful portfolio managers – they may feel they are at risk of being front run, mimiced, or used.
