Reflective Essay On My English Teacher
Who would have thought that an old, rain–stained ceiling tile with some paint on it would have spurred up such a desire in my heart to change the
world? It was simply a dirty, rain stained piece of material with a story on it in my 10th grade English class, but it was more than that. What fascinates
me most about becoming an educator is how a teacher can turn a simple idea into something meaningful, creating an opportunity to challenge students
to become better people. My English teacher, Matthew Squires, captured the heart of teaching in his classroom, empowering us to learn from the
materials and wrestle with the concepts behind it then change our life because of it. He used activities like the ceiling tile to create an environment of
learning, not just test taking, where we got to engage with concepts and ideas about life then depict what we learned in ways we enjoyed. Mr.
Squires classroom ceiling was lined with colorful tiles, personal stories and life long memories. Every year I chose to take his classes again not
because they were easy, but because essays were intriguing and class time was engaging. We'd talk about ethics, faith and values, challenging
assumptions and questioning why the world worked the way it did. Mr. Squires saw his students for who they could be and didn't settle with us
simply passing his grammar test and memorizing all the right answers. Mr. Squires class pushed me farther than any of my other classes and made me
a better person. I believe Mr.

I Am A Prospective Secondary English Teacher
I am a prospective Secondary English teacher; therefore, this career equity report will be focusing on high school teachers. Before researching, I
would like to write down what I already know about teachers. Compared to many other professions, the average salary is low and the number of
women in the occupation is high. However, I am planning to teacher English in Japan after graduating from college; therefore, I will try to
incorporate something about Japan's English teachers as well. I would like to teach English in Japan for about 3 years through the Japanese English
Teacher Programme (JET) before I find a job with a private school. Along with teaching, I plan on working as a freelance translator for companies.
Overview
Unlike most elementary school teachers, a high school teacher is affluent in one teaching subject, i.e., English, Math, etc. Aside from standard
subjects, there are also teachers who specialize in English as a second Language) and English speakers of other language (ESOL) (Bureau of Labor).
The primary goal of a high school teacher is to prepare their students for success after graduating high school. The skills that the students learn in the
classroom will assist them in getting in to college or the workplace. A teacher's work is composed of class time (physically lecturing and teaching
students), Planning, meeting with other teachers and staff, parent teacher conferences, and grading. Teaching is an extremely work intensive job that
requires one to work

Should Teachers Help The Immigrant Students To Speak English?
There are kids that struggle in school because they don't English and the other kids would make fun of them. Teachers should help the immigrant
students to speak English. Children of immigrant think they have to act white just to be accepted. People need to learn English and need to have a
High School diploma to get a great job to get good amount of money and be accepted by white people. Children of immigrants often feel they must
lose their identity because they would have to adapt to a new culture and will lose their language. Parents should talk with their kids about how they
should get to know people and be friends with them and get accepted, and this will help them adapt to the new culture. Some kids make

Reflection On English Teacher
Reflection text Entering an English course after practicing as a teacher for many years are both disturbing and exiting. Disturbing, because I
challenge my own practice. How will it cope comparing to new theory and practice? Exiting, because I look forward to getting new inputs and
knowledge, and to develop myself as a teacher. The result so far is approximately as I expected. In my first years of practice I spent much time to go
through the text of the week, and to hear the pupils read aloud. Over the years I have developed my teaching including more activities were pupils are
more active and communicate directly with each other. Through these first months of the course I have realized that I have to go further down this
route. The necessity... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meaning, as long as their pronunciation are clear and they speak with correct clauses it doesn't matter whether they speak one or another English.
I haven't been aware of this fact and have always strived for British English. As a hole I see my role as an English teacher more as a facilitator and
less the conventional teacher. When improving my teaching I think it is important to take small steps. Doing a little more or otherwise gradually.
Thereby it is easier for me incorporate, maintain and develop. By making it a routine before heading on doesn't feel like it's so much work. The
goal is to expand my toolbox of activities to be a more competent English teacher. So far, this English course have only lasted for three months, but I
have already learned a lot that challenge my way of teaching and my thinking around the subject. I have taken small steps in daily routine to
incorporate English, and I'm planning to do more. Further, have I changed my lessons to contain several activities targeting communication and
collocation, and finally, I have changed the way I look at teaching English. The disturbances I felt in the beginning is still a part of it all. Discovering
your own incompetence is never pleasant, but I believe that excitement will take its place before the course is

Dr. Wiley Cole: An English Teacher
An average person spends about 9% of his or her life in school. That's roughly 14,000 hours in school from the time you enter kindergarten, until the
time you graduate high school. Growing up we almost always swear that going to school is the worst possible thing our parents could ever make
us do. We thought of it as a punishment rather than a privilege. I had these same emotions majority of my school career, until I met the one teacher
who made me excited to come to school every day. There are some people in life that we encounter and instantly feel blessed and privileged to know
that person. Dr. Cole was one of those people. Dr. Wiley Cole, an English teacher, is one of those rare gems that you find and are forever grateful you

Literacy Is Not Only A Problem That The English Teacher
Times are changing. Literacy is not only a problem that the English teacher has to deal with. Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write
(Oxford Dictionaries). However, you have to use different skills to read a novel than you do with reading a science question. So it only makes that
literacy should be taught in different ways for each different subject. It does a student no good to be able to physically read a science question but
have no idea what it's asking for. The last five years have seen unprecedented attention given to the literacy achievement of adolescents in secondary
schools in the United States. Spurred by the release of flat or declining reading scores on national tests. (Donahue, Daane & Grigg, 2003). This could
be easily linked to a lack of literacy techniques being taught in schools.
Some English teachers might even argue that their content focuses more on rhetorical devices and composition rather than learning to read and write.
Some teachers may say that they need to focus more on content than literacy strategies. However, simple literacy strategies can be taught that we will
help students understand the content even greater. For example, a higher level literacy thinking skill is being able to properly label diagrams and
maps. If a student cannot understand how to read a map of Europe they simple will not do well in a history class. Some teachers might not realize that
they are teaching literacy skills by teaching a student how to read a map

Senior Year AP English Teacher
My senior year AP English teacher is well known throughout the school for being the hardest grading teacher there is. An argumentative research
paper comprises a significant part of our grade. Although he assigned us the research paper at the beginning of the year, most people procrastinated
until it was due in two weeks. I along with handful of people had finished and turned it in two weeks before the due date. My teacher quickly
reviewed my essay and said to the class that I had written a good paper. This prompted a wake–up call for the whole entire class. Word spread, and I
found myself surrounded by many people who desperately needed my help. At first, I would only accept a couple of essays to review. I thought to

Advantages And Disadvantages Of English Teacher
As the world today becomes more and more globalised, the knowledge of the English language also becomes more important to be able to
communicate well. And upon having approximately 380 million native speakers of English and more than 700 non–native speakers of English all over
the world, (English Language Guide, 2008) others, and I myself see that as an advantage and once thought that studying to be an English teacher in
the future has a lot of opportunities and you can easily have a job no matter where you go especially demand for English teachers worldwide is
skyrocketing. But after doing some research, I realized that there have been numerous debates and controversies about who are better teachers of the
English language. There are also... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would like to highlight three which are: (1) they lack communicative competence, (2) they do not the fluency, and (3) they cannot use the English
language as creative as native speakers do. First and foremost, non–native speakers lack communicative competence as they often use English only in
classroom contexts and with their fellow non–native colleagues and lack the contact to actual native English speakers (Braine, 1999). That might make
their version of English outdated, incorrect or too formal (Medgyes, 1999). This might cause a certain insecurity in their use of the English language
and a feeling to defend themselves as teachers. This insecurity may affect their teaching style, thus may also have a negative impact on the students
learning process as those perceive the teacher's uncertainty as a lack of knowledge and competence. Their teaching behavior might also decrease the
students' motivation as they perceive their teacher as unable and ignorant (Braine, 1999). Second is about non–native speakers do not have the fluency,
general language proficiency and cultural knowledge as native speakers have, which means that they are not as secure and flexible in language use
(Braine, 1999). Lastly, non–native teachers cannot use the English language as creatively as their native colleagues do. They have problems
understanding jokes and analysing or interpreting texts, (Braine, 1999) which makes them somewhat less capable of teaching their students those
aspects of the language which will be useful or even necessary in

Question: How does Narayan explore the themes of life and death?
R.K Narayan's Novel "The English Teacher" set in 1946 in British colonial India. It is a story of Krishna and his life with his wife, Susila. R.K
Narayan explores numerous themes, the two most vital themes are life and death. Throughout the novel, Narayan shows the reader that in life everyone
has to have a purpose and death is never the end.
In the beginning of the novel, R.K Narayan shows that Krishna life was in a daily routine. "I got up every day at eight ...four hours later I returned
to my room" Krishna explains here that his life, living in the college is always the same every day. Krishna tries to improve his life, even if he
doesn't know his purpose by reflecting it daily. "I took stock of my daily life." Krishna doesn't do the job for anyone, he only does it for himself and
for the 100 rupees that he will get at the end of every month. "If they paid me the same hundred rupees for stringing beads together.... I would perhaps

Describe a teacher who has had the most impact on you and why.
The teacher who has had the most impact on me was my English 101 teacher. After high school, I went straight to college and took English 101 as
one of my first classes. I came from a very good school and was extremely confident in my writing abilities. I had a fixed mindset about my abilities but
not in the traditional way. I was convinced that I couldn't be better. After hammering out a paper in a couple of days, turning it in with pride then
continuing on with daily life, I received my paper, with a C! I couldn't believe it I never got C's on my work, ever. I went through a lot of stages of
denial. I thought it was a mistake, or maybe the teacher had a personal grudge against

Being An English Teacher
Being an English teacher has always been my dream, and I have been growing up with it since I was a child. That dream has had a great impact on my
decision–making and building my personality. It helped me trace my future by improving myself to meet the needs of a suitable English teacher
who does not only have the knowledge of the language, but also has good manners, in addition to the potential to be an idol for his students, and
also for people in his community. The love of the English language is the basis of the will to be an English teacher because for me, to succeed in
something you need to love it first. English is a fascinating language and it is the most widely spoken language globally. It is used mostly every
field from aviation, teaching, science and so on. it has a deep history with many wonderful poets and linguists who made this language great such
us, William Shakespeare and Noam Chomsky. Overall, a teacher is a peace promoter and an ignorance fighter and for me that is a great duty to
have a part of it. I have had some teaching experiences as a private English teacher and an evening course teacher at a school that I enjoyed taking
because I felt that my students made great progress while teaching them the English language. One of my students two years ago, was preparing for his
final exams in order to graduate from high school, while English was one of many subjects included in his final exams, but unfortunately his English

Through interviewing an English teacher, which mostly all students have, he describes their willingness to learn and excel amazing. We discussed the
challenges and obstacles he has faced or had to overcome with educating International students. His response reflected being extra sensitive and
culturally aware of the diversity they bring to the class. He describes their learning styles very different to other students, as they are focused solely on
the letter grade they are receiving. He informed me that students go to him everyday after class worried about their grade. Although he feels it is a
good challenge, he is constantly reminding them they are excelling and the grades do not reflect the exact grade because he is always updating it. Being

Leaving your home country and having to start all over in a new community is difficult but luckily Hacienda Heights provides similar parallels to their
culture. Interviewing the students was the best part; I learned so much from just talking to them. Few students had visited California before while
others first day of school was their first day in the United States. The adaptability each student thrives is inspiring and courageous. They have adapted
so well to all the different norms and customs of a California high school. They spoke with passion and excitement about being here. Few students
were world travelers and have been all over the world; so going to school in California is just an exciting opportunity they are passionate about. They
discussed similarities between their hometown and California. One, which stood out, was "Uber" which is similar to a taxi service. I spoke with a
few towards the end of school and walked them out to the parking lot, which they informed me that they were waiting for an Uber to pick them up. I
immediately connected with them and talked about a similar service in China. It was fascinating to see common parallels in two completely different

Advantages And Cons Of Recommendations For Teachers Of...
The findings discussed in the previous chapter show that:
In both theory and application, the differentiated instruction has its own great benefits, especially it is used to engage the students in learning, motivate
them as well as create interesting learning atmosphere which altogether lead to the improvement in their learning and achieve the goal of learning
However, to use it successfully, teachers need to combine with other methods to maximize the advantages and minimize the disadvantages of this
method because as the feedbacks from teachers earlier, differentiated instruction is very difficult and complicated to use frequently. It is so
time–consuming from the moment teachers receive the group of students, they need to do a thorough need analysis, spend more time analyzing and
thinking the suitable activities for their students. Teachers need also being well–trained and have to get some support from teaching assistants or the
school administration to achieve the goal.

As it is uneasy to use differentiated instruction, teachers should be flexible to choose some tasks or parts of the lesson that would arouse students'
interest and meet student's diversity. Using differentiated instruction does not mean that you have to differentiate every lesson, every day. As one of
the teacher said that she was successful in her class because she varied the activities, split the aim of the lesson to meet student's level. All students
with different levels can enjoy the class. It really can help our students in their language improvement, learning attitude and learning and teaching
process. Therefore, there is a need for teachers to be trained so that they can apply DI for the benefits of the

My Philosophy Of Writing : My High School English Teacher
"There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed." This is in my top five favorite quotes. My high school English
teacher introduced me to this quote from Ernest Hemingway during one of her lectures. Mrs. Rothe and I were really close and this was also one of
her favorite quotes. She had us read the Old Man in the Sea; one of Hemingway's famous writings. Mrs. Rothe was my English teacher for three
years and she taught me how to write well and love it at the same time. Certain teachers have the gift of inspiring kids to be great. While there are
many examples of teachers who have not convinced students to stay in school and become drop–outs, such as rapper Marshal Mathers and billionaire
Bill Gates, there are many examples of teachers who empower students to go to the next level, such as news anchor Brian Williams and President Bill
Clinton. Williams credits his English literature teacher, Mr. Bob Kitzin, for turning his life around. Thanks to Mrs. Rothe, my perspective onwriting has
changed dramatically. Most of my inspiration for my writings comes from her. I give her a lot of credit for the student and writer I am today. I believe
every student should have a teacher like my high school English teacher in their life that can be a mentor and can navigate you down the best path to
success in your education and professorial careers. Sondra Perl, Professor of English for Lehman College, suggest that teachers who do not encourage

School Grade English Language Arts And Reading Teacher
As a newly graduated teacher, I was beyond grateful when I received that phone call asking if I would like to accept the position as a Hubbard

restroom during class? Throughout the summer, leading up to the first day that I would go from a student to a teacher and be in charge of one
hundred budding minds and personalities, I lined out everything I needed to have a successful first week. Supplies were sorted into bins, lesson plans
were submitted, and copies of get–to–know–you games were made. All through college I heard that the amount I had learned all those year in college

thought that what they had told me about my first year teaching being the hardest year of my life must have skipped right over me. I was learning a lot,

Speed Theorizing: Should English Teachers Be Language Cops...
Speed Theorizing: Should English Teachers be "Language Cops" in the Classroom? If teachers act as the "language police" in their classrooms, how
do they decide what is considered a violation and what is considered within acceptable bounds? Who decides what language is within the acceptable
bounds? When teachers avoid being "language cops," are they hurting their students by deemphasizing standard English that is prominent in the world?
These are questions that need to be acknowledged by educators in order for there to be a significant change in how students' home languages are
perceived and welcomed into the curriculum. I think the answer to whether or not teachers should be "language cops" rests somewhere in the middle.
Another question that comes to mind is, when do teachers allow students to express themselves using their home language and when do they make the
shift to teaching students the way to construct the "cash language" that they will need to use inside and outside of the classroom? As a perspective
teacher, I have learned numerous ways that we can welcome students' own voices in the classroom to express their thoughts and feelings. One of the
ways is to give them the freedom to write the way they think is by allowing them to use their own language, dialect, and register. As a result the
opportunity to explore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By performing this step, they are learning how to "switch in and out of the language of power," which is expected to be used on standardized tests,

use language and all of them are correct; however, we must be able to determine the appropriate outlets to use them in because standard English is the

Why English Teachers Remember Names Of Their Students
Do English Teachers remember name of their students in large class?
A Case Study of Teaching Large Classes in Jambi, Indonesia
Muhammad Intizom
Jambi, Indonesia
Abstract
This paper tried to answer one simple question in handling large class. Does English teacher remember names of their students in large class? The
answer of this question will lead to other problems that will be revealed in this paper. This mini research used interviews to find the answer. 3 EFL
teachers from one public secondary school in Jambi, Indonesia participated in the study.
1.Introduction
Teaching English in a large class is very challenging. It will be more difficult for teachers to make sure that students are engaging in their class. It is
also very confusing to give objective marks for students since there are many names they have to remember. If there is no more option for teachers
rather than teaching in large class, they have to start adjusting themselves in this new situation. Many theories suggest on how handling a large class,
but the implementation of these theories will give different result for different condition.
It is commonplace to state today that Public High school in Jambi cannot avoid of having large classes. It was estimated that from 11 public schools in
Jambi, each class will consist of 35–65 students (Anon, 2015). This phenomenon is another challenge faced by English Teacher in this city. They need
more efforts to do their work. One of the least efforts they have to

Becoming A Second Grade English Teacher
Throughout every person's life, they have many aspirations to become a vast array of different careers, beginning as a young child. As a child,
career choices are typically unspecific and seem unrealistic to an adult, but some children grow up and become exactly what they want to be. For
example, when I was a child and people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always told them that I wanted to be a teacher. During high
school, I lost that dream and turned to child psychology and then to pediatric nursing. Since I have started college, it became imperative for me to
decide what I truly wished to be. My mind went back to what I always wanted as a child and I knew in my heart that this was the right decision; an

This means that, without these skills, a child will either completely fail in school or have an extremely difficult time passing. The skills taught in
elementary are necessary through college and throughout a person's entire life. There are so many things that elementary school teachers do on a daily
basis including, but not limited to, lesson planning, assessing students to evaluate their strengths, weaknesses, and abilities, teaching the lesson plans
and making sure that all of the students understand what exactly is going on, grading assignments, communicating with parents or guardians of the
children, working one–on–one with students to help overcome any type of challenges, preparing their classes for state–required standardized tests, put
classroom rules into effect to teach children proper classroom behavior, and supervising children outside of the classroom. (U.S Bureau of Labor

there are many different requirements; after all, a teacher is supposed to be able to answer just about any type of question

The Importance Of Activity Theory In English Language Arts...
Activity system analysis is regarded as a method to capture the wholeness of the multi–mediational process of human activity (Engestrom, 1987).
Additionally, as an analytical tool, activity theory also shapes the questions that researchers intend to explore and research methods that are adopted in
their studies, for comprehensively obtaining information about participants' developmental processes (Yamagata–Lynch, 2010). With the awareness of
the premise of activity theory to investigate individual teacher development, scholars in teacher education have used activity theory to study English
language arts teacher development (e.g., Grossman et al., 1999; Grossman Valencia, Evans, Thompson, Martin, & Place, 2000; Jahreie & Ottesen,
2010; Newell, Gingrich & Johnson, 2001; Newell & Connors, 2011; Smagrinsky et al. ), as well as language teacher development (e.g., Ahn, 2011;
Childs, 2011; Kim, 2011; Tasker, 2011; Smolcic, 2011).
Grossman, Valencia, Evans, Thompson, Martin, and Place (2000) presented three cases of beginning English arts teachers from a more extensive
longitudinal study. All three beginning teachers were graduated from either Master's programs of elementary and secondary teacher education and
were followed by researchers from their student teaching into their first three years of full–time teaching. Data included interviews, classroom
observations, and documentations. All three novice teachers, from an activity theoretical perspective, were found to be influenced

This correlates directly to their ranking and teaching evaluations. Teachers feel pushed to teach a test (Layton 2). In order for teachers and schools to
look good, test score of their classes need to excel. The teachers and schools feel that in order for their students to do that they need to learn how to
take tests and simply more about the tests. This takes away from actually teaching the subject which is a lose–lose situation.Teachers teach a test
instead of material that could go into more depth. Along the same lines, "In forty percent of districts surveyed, test results are not available until the
following school year, making them useless for teachers who want to use results to help guide their work in the classroom," (Layton 7). The tests taken
by students have limited use for teachers who are in the classroom and could use them to further the student's education. Access to these tests could
improve the learning capabilities and give the teachers a broader spectrum of what needs to be focused on in the classroom. The teachers are able to

Personal Narrative: My Saanic English Teacher
When I was a sophomore in high school, I hated my satanic English teacher, Mr. Litvin. I had great anxiety throughout that whole year due to his

school until morning before school started. It was a crazy experience –all nighters just for a few page essays. I managed to get a few A's, but mostly
B's. Another stressful part of his class was participation grade, we would have to read our in–class paragraph in front of the class and he would
brutally critique it in front of everyone. I know he was doing it for our benefit to improve as a writer, but I could not help feel ridiculed when I

Ponyboy And The English Teacher Summary
Ponyboy and The English Teacher Summary: I started out as a kid that doesn't use his head with 6 good friends, but after a series of events I was
left with 4. I got involved in a murder that Johnny committed and used Dally to hide from the law. After about 5 days Johnny decided enough was
enough and that he had to confess. However, the church we were hiding in which used to be our safeplace went down in flames and dragged
Johnny with it. After he said his last words to me in the hospital, Dally couldn't handle it and died outside of a grocery store. I couldn't take the
thought of the ones I once held close gone so I went delirious. A concussion was the culprit. When my little episode ended I still couldn't go back to
normal. My grades went down so far my english teacher had a talk with me. He said that I had one theme to do to higher my grade. That theme became
the whole story and it was the best thing I could've ever written. Story: I had just finished my theme and was ready to turn it in. I'm hoping I'll get a
good grade because if I don't I might have to leave school like Soda did. Darry sure won't allow that. My english teacher, Mr. Syme gave me a call

required of a teaching meant I was effectively robbing my students of a proper value for their money. This is why I decided to complete this course
and over three relatively short weeks I have learnt and grown a lot as a teacher. My first lesson was the in the follow of managing the classroom and
how effective management can be used to stimulate learning, my second lesson came in the form of understanding how to properly utilize the
whiteboard as a tool to get instructions across to the students while helping me minimize my teacher talk time. I think however the most important
thing I have learnt is that in order to be an effective teacher you have to have your student's best interest at heart and be willing to go the extra mile for
them.
What is a good teacher?
Despite taking this course I don't think my idea of what a good teacher is has changed as I have always believed that a good teacher should be
someone who not only have a strong understanding about the materials being presented but a effective delivery system of that material as well.
What I mean by this is that a good teacher is one that is able to impart knowledge onto his students in such a way as to make the students excited to
want to learn and a very effective way in which I have seen that done is by associating all lessons as much as possible with the student's everyday like
so they can make the connection between what they are learning and its use in the real world as the biggest hurdle to learning in my opinion is often
the disconnect between the materials being taught and its application in your everyday life.
Strengths and Weaknesses
When I taught for the first time I was terrified, I was concerned that everything that could go wrong would go wrong and as I went through the
material I had prepared I felt like that was the case as I forgot students names, didn't make my instructions clear enough at times and did a mediocre job
at managing the

My Identities Of Being An English Language Teacher
my identity of being an English language teacher pushed me to be accurate about the information I delivered to my students. At that time, every
English teacher was required to teach "Standard English". My understanding of "Standard" was "Standard" grammar and "Standard" pronunciation
since these areas were constantly tested by the university as well as by the Board of Higher Education. I thought I would never achieve this
political expectation because I could stick to the grammar book but I could not force my students to speak English the same way to make their
English "Standard". As a teacher, I care about speaking because I believe that an important reason of learning a language is to freely talk to people
who speak the language. Although speaking naturally occurs to native speakers of the language, it is a challenge to speakers who are learning English
as a second or foreign language. For this reason, I encouraged my students to participate in classroom discussions as well as in after–school English
Corner where English was practiced orally. I was tolerable about students' different pronunciations, intonations and dialect–intermingled Englishes
(some students speak their local Chinese dialects and this affects their English pronunciation). I would only correct them when their pronunciation and
word stress caused misunderstanding. The philosophy underpinning my language paradigm was that I intended to allow "linguistic and social
differences" (Duke, 2011, p.

Different Accents Of Non Native English Teachers
Saudi Universities assigned English language teachers from different parts of the world to teach English courses for their students. Most of those
teachers come from: Egypt, India, Tunis, Sudan and South Africa and other parts of the worlds. Those different non–native English teachers speak
English with some kind of accent. The aim of this research is to investigate the attitudes of Saudi Universities' students towards the accent of
non–native English teachers who teach them. Another aim of this research is to explore whether the different accents of non–native English teachers
affect the comprehension of the students in the class. Research Questions and Hypothesis: The main focus of this study is to answer the following
questions: 1–What is the attitude of Saudi University students towards the accent of non–native English language teachers? 2–Do males and females
differ in their attitudes towards the accent of non–native English language teachers? 3–Does different accent of non–native English teachers affect the
students' comprehension? 4–Which accent of the non–native English teacher is easy to understand for the students and which on of them is hard to
understand? Why? This study is based on the following hypothesis: 1–Saudi students have different attitudes towards different accents of non–native
English language teachers. 2–Male and female have different attitudes toward non–native English language teachers. 3–Some of the accents of

Personal Narrative: My English 100E Teacher Christopher...
I interviewed my English 100E teacher Christopher Vineyard. Mr. Chris is a funny, outgoing, and intelligent person. He enjoys spending time with
his wife, and taking care of their cat. Mr. Chris originally wanted to be a policeman, but he didn't like the fact that he'll have to be nice to criminals.
Instead he decided to become an English teacher so he help guide others down the right path. English always been his suit especially in community
college where he would use to help tutor his fellow classmates. The meeting took place September 29th in his class room early in the morning around
9 am. We both felt great about the interview it was long anticipated, he told me this was his 10th interview this week. I wasn't nervous about the

What I Would Do as an English Teacher
Even though I have yet to begin my teaching career, I have had some amazing teachers and some teachers who I did not work well with. Through my
educational career, I have seen what tactics I find to be helpful and I have seen learning strategies that have hindered the learning process. I have also
discovered what I believe the purpose of education is.
The purpose of education is to teach students about their past, inform them about their present and prepare them for their future. Education should
enlist the talents of great thinkers and great authors in order to help create the foundation on which the students will begin their educational journey.
After those lessons are learned, the students should be able to build on those findings and further their own educational journey. I always found learning
to be more exciting whenever I was learning something that pertained to my interests.
As an educator, it is my job to challenge the students in a way that is not detrimental to their education, but instead will enrich their lives and their
future. By zeroing in on the students' strengths and interests, I can help students create a post–secondary path that will be the starting point for their
imminent future. Instead of teaching all subjects equally, I believe that students should be allowed to learn the basics and then focus in on one or two
subjects.
Teaching English will let me teach some of the great novels, both past and present, which focus on the different time periods,

Teaching English : The Teacher Of The English Language
"In the end we all long for a way to connect with others and be heard, words enable us to do that." This is what Lisa, the teacher of the ESL class,
told me after I asked her why it was so important for her to teach English. Mrs. Lisa is very passionate about her job and with only nine days of
knowing her, I realized what a big heart she has. She cares so much about the students and her main goal is always to help them in any way she can. I
believe that her passion to teach also inspires the students she teaches. The seven students I observed in the English as a Second Language class work
hard and have a lot of determination to reach their goals. The students are learning English to fit in and be able to express their opinions to others, and
the teacher does a lot of extra things to make that possible. By watching them, I realized how important education is for these students. In my interviews
most students said that they want a better future for themselves and their families. The effort put into this ELS class by students and the teacher made
me realize that this class is so much more to them then purely learning English. Preconceptions
Even though I had never attended the ESL classes before, I had heard a lot about them from my mom. Since my mom attends the morning ESL class
that the teacher offers, I am already have a bias when coming to observe the classes. Whenever she goes to class she usually will talk about what they
discussed at dinner time with our family. She

Statistics suggest that the number of people who learning English around the world is more than one billion, and British Council also estimated that,
by 2000, 750 million people spoke English as a Foreign Language. Moreover, there were 375 million people speak English as a second Language. In
2014, the number of English learners has increased to 1.5 billion (ThoughtCo, 2017). There is no doubt that English teachers are an essential part of
English learning. Generally, we divide English teachers into two parts–native English speaking teachers (NESTs) and non–native English speaking
teachers (non–NESTs). 'Native speaker (NS) is a person who has spoken the language in question from earliest childhood' (Oxford Dictionaries |
English, 2018). 'Non–native speaker (NNS) is someone who has learned a particular language as a child or adult rather than a baby' (Anon, n.d). There
are about 80% non–native speaker teachers in English

How To Write An Essay About My English Teacher
Let's be honest, thinking of a teacher that was memorable for reasons that don't include, giving F's, giving homework, or giving detentions ... is kinda
tricky. But there was one teacher who impacted my life in ways I never thought were possible. This teacher was my eighth grade English teacher.
Yes I know you are all going, "You're English teacher? No way."
Yes way!! I was honestly my English teacher who had the most impact on my life. Now, it wasn't exactly for what she taught me in class: dissecting
sentences or finding different types of verbs or identifying the subject or doing lots of in depth research. But for the lessons of growing up as a mature
human being and the lessons of life that impacted me. I'll be the first to tell you that I wasn't this teacher's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Anyhow, I wasn't able to go to school so I was going to miss my exam. My teacher reached out to me and told me she would allow me to take it at
home.
Yes, at HOME!
I know the question flying through all of your minds, "Did you cheat??" Well I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I did not cheat on my exam. This
teacher had found enough trust in me that she was willing to let me take my exam from the comfort of my own bed. I couldn't go behind her back
and just break that bond of trust I had worked so hard to make. No one was watching and she would've never known, but I couldn't live with the guilt
that would've feeled me every single time I looked her in the eyes.
I know all you people are saying I would've, but would you have really?
You all are going, "Well I would've cheated, I wouldn't have felt guilty," well I disagree. I can almost guarantee that almost every single one of you
would've done the same thing I did.
By this point I had loved this teacher, not for letting me take my exam at home, but by teaching me a true lesson of life. I couldn't thank her enough. The
second half of the school year was the same.

from Newman Catholic College who helped and guided me to formulate my research topic, as well as, the process of carrying out the action plan.
Abstract This paper offers an example of how to apply action research to improve and explore the patterns of teacher–student verbal communication
that existed in my classroom. Pre and post survey and teacher observation were used to record changes in the classroom interaction during the

How have you liked learning English so far this year? Do you like your English teacher? Students were asked to rate their answers using a scale of 1
to 5. The scale was represented by 1:(; 2:(; 3:(; 4: [pic], the results were mostly in 2 and 3. (Appendix.B). I have discovered that most of my students
are rather passive in answering questions, where responding is often not voluntarily. Thus, little oral feedback is received from the students. Many have
low confidence in their ability to speak without prior planning, therefore, there is no immediate response to teacher's question and this is because
"listening to teacher" has been their most frequent classroom experience rather than answering. Most of the students sit looking straight ahead using
minimal facial expressions, verbal utterances and avoid any eye–contact with the teacher, often the feedbacks I would receive is the simple nods and
shakes of their head. Furthermore, Student would never ask the teacher questions during the lesson, however, they would come and ask after the lesson
in the one–on–one situation. Most of my students enjoyed inadequate speaking opportunities in classroom but when it comes to class discussion, they
would not participate nor comments. In most other classes that I have observed, the teacher would address the class as a whole with few questions to
check their understandings. However, there were no responses or reactions from the students. Then, students had to answer some questions

Career As An English As A Second Language Teacher?
Eric Thomas

ENGL 331
PROFESSIONAL RESEARCH PROPOSAL
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO PURSUE A CAREER AS AN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHER? ESL is a common abbreviation
used in schools and it stands for "English as a Second Language." Schools will often use the term ESL when describing the programs that educate
students who are not native English speakers and for describing the 'ESL students ' themselves. ESL is a career path that is taken to educate students
who are not native English speakers which means instructions are passed down to the learners in the use of English, for better understanding and
communication for this group of learners.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVE An ESL (English as aSecond Language) program is established to provide students with the vocabulary and grammatical
structures needed for both school performance and everyday living. This will help learners to be able to access the society in which they find
themselves in to be normal and easy to go by. Together with the classroom teacher, the ESL teacher develops language acquisition and cognitive
academic language skills through the use of sound instructional techniques. An ESL program provides the English Language Learner (ELL) the
opportunity to grasp the academic, social, and cultural aspects of the English language through the teaching of reading, writing, spelling, and listening.
The goal of an ESL program is to help students develop language skills necessary to be successful students and

Advantages Of Native English Teacher
Is native English speaker better teacher than the one that has English as the second language? When a person chose to study English at university,
doing that deliberately to become an English teacher in a foreign, preferably Asian, countries. To explore new cultures and to meet new people through
English. They might begin to look around for suitable job offers in advance to get information and prepare themselves for any certificates and
qualifications needed. But after a while, they may find out that almost all English schools in Japan, Korea, and China prefer to hire an English native,
naturally, but with no need of any kind of experience, certificate, or in China, even without a Bachelor degree. The most difficult situation might be in
Japan, where the requirements for an English teacher are unreasonably high how a journalist Liam Carrigan mentioned in his article. ...the
aforementioned prejudice against those with a non–native accent is a problem not just for recruiters and managers but large swathes of the
English–studying Japanese public, too. Most paying Japanese customers of these larger chains have a specific idea of the kind of teacher they want:
typically, young, attractive individuals with as neutral an accent as possible. In the past, I've even been rejected from such jobs because my Scottish
accent 'didn't sound native enough.' (Carrigan) To find out why is a non–experienced English native more valued than a non–native English teacher
with a proper university

Persuasive Essay : Why English Teachers Matter?
Why English Teachers Matter
They don't. English teachers are some of the least hardworking people. They teach a subject that nearly all of the school doesn't care about. Unlike the
Math or Sciences, they don't hold any merit in real life. They don't prepare us for anything nor do they advance our knowledge. I can understand why
something like Social Studies would exist as that means we won't make mistakes that have been made in history or that we will have a better
understanding of the humanities and how people work. But what does English contribute? Nothing. English teachers sit there and pretend as if what
they teach is important, but it simply isn't. When, in my life, am I ever going to need to read a complex piece of text? When, in my life, will I ever
face a point where reading carefully through a document would affect my future? Never. When would I ever need to understand "what the author" is
thinking? The only times that is useful is for passing English, and nothing else. There is no need to understand the tone of anything, nor the mood or
the voice. There simply isn't a point to it. When, in the entirety of the world, has someone ever need to understand the "subtext" of a conversation. It
simply isn't things that are useful to us.
English teachers act as if what they teach is important. They act as if we would be people interested in becoming English teachers like them but there
simply isn't a point to it. They act as if the fact that they teach one of the eldest

Benefits Of An English Teacher
OBJECTIVES AND MOTIVATIONS "If you become someone famous like a president, or someone important, I would be proud to say that I was

six–year–old little girl, my life. That was the moment when I decided to become a teacher because I wanted to have the same impact on people, and
two years later after my first English class in life I decided to become an English teacher. English classes were expensive and my family economy

want to study English, we can use the money of your scholarship and I can pay the rest of the fee in an English School; but only if you are really sure
that you want to be an English teacher". Of course, I accepted, there was nothing to think. A few months ago a student asked me: "Teacher, why are the
English teachers always smiling?" – He then jokingly added that he must change his college major to be a teacher in order to be happy like us. That
made me think about my profession, I had never realized that before! It was Monday and usually, people do Mechanic, Aquaculture,... Show more

I Am A Second Grade English Language Arts Teacher
In my five years of being a third grade English Language Arts teacher, the implementation of guided reading has been my biggest struggle. My
school has fully adopted the guided reading program within the past 2 years. A guided reading library and books for professional development have
been purchased, but very little training has occurred. The journey of learning how to successfully teach Reading using Jan Richardson's approach to
guided reading has been a challenge to say the least. Scheduling has been the largest obstacle I have faced in implementing guided reading in my
classroom. I have spent this summer researching and reading about guided reading in an attempt to gain further understanding of the process and the
outcomes before the next school year begins. Guided reading is a method of teaching reading that be used with every reader, whether they are just
beginning to read, struggling to read, or are able to read independently (Iaquinta, 2006). According to Anita Iaquinta, there are three fundamental
purposes for using guided reading. The first fundamental purpose is to meet all of the ranges of instructional needs of every student in the classroom.
The second fundamental purpose for guided reading is that it enables students to significantly build and expand their reading abilities. The final
fundamental purpose of guided reading is for students to learn how to read increasingly difficult texts (Iaquinta, 2006). Guided reading lessons are
completed in small groups

Reflective Essay On My English Teacher

  • 1. Reflective Essay On My English Teacher Who would have thought that an old, rain–stained ceiling tile with some paint on it would have spurred up such a desire in my heart to change the world? It was simply a dirty, rain stained piece of material with a story on it in my 10th grade English class, but it was more than that. What fascinates me most about becoming an educator is how a teacher can turn a simple idea into something meaningful, creating an opportunity to challenge students to become better people. My English teacher, Matthew Squires, captured the heart of teaching in his classroom, empowering us to learn from the materials and wrestle with the concepts behind it then change our life because of it. He used activities like the ceiling tile to create an environment of learning, not just test taking, where we got to engage with concepts and ideas about life then depict what we learned in ways we enjoyed. Mr. Squires classroom ceiling was lined with colorful tiles, personal stories and life long memories. Every year I chose to take his classes again not because they were easy, but because essays were intriguing and class time was engaging. We'd talk about ethics, faith and values, challenging assumptions and questioning why the world worked the way it did. Mr. Squires saw his students for who they could be and didn't settle with us simply passing his grammar test and memorizing all the right answers. Mr. Squires class pushed me farther than any of my other classes and made me a better person. I believe Mr. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. I Am A Prospective Secondary English Teacher I am a prospective Secondary English teacher; therefore, this career equity report will be focusing on high school teachers. Before researching, I would like to write down what I already know about teachers. Compared to many other professions, the average salary is low and the number of women in the occupation is high. However, I am planning to teacher English in Japan after graduating from college; therefore, I will try to incorporate something about Japan's English teachers as well. I would like to teach English in Japan for about 3 years through the Japanese English Teacher Programme (JET) before I find a job with a private school. Along with teaching, I plan on working as a freelance translator for companies. Overview Unlike most elementary school teachers, a high school teacher is affluent in one teaching subject, i.e., English, Math, etc. Aside from standard subjects, there are also teachers who specialize in English as a second Language) and English speakers of other language (ESOL) (Bureau of Labor). The primary goal of a high school teacher is to prepare their students for success after graduating high school. The skills that the students learn in the classroom will assist them in getting in to college or the workplace. A teacher's work is composed of class time (physically lecturing and teaching students), Planning, meeting with other teachers and staff, parent teacher conferences, and grading. Teaching is an extremely work intensive job that requires one to work ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Should Teachers Help The Immigrant Students To Speak English? There are kids that struggle in school because they don't English and the other kids would make fun of them. Teachers should help the immigrant students to speak English. Children of immigrant think they have to act white just to be accepted. People need to learn English and need to have a High School diploma to get a great job to get good amount of money and be accepted by white people. Children of immigrants often feel they must lose their identity because they would have to adapt to a new culture and will lose their language. Parents should talk with their kids about how they should get to know people and be friends with them and get accepted, and this will help them adapt to the new culture. Some kids make ... • 4. Reflection On English Teacher Reflection text Entering an English course after practicing as a teacher for many years are both disturbing and exiting. Disturbing, because I challenge my own practice. How will it cope comparing to new theory and practice? Exiting, because I look forward to getting new inputs and knowledge, and to develop myself as a teacher. The result so far is approximately as I expected. In my first years of practice I spent much time to go through the text of the week, and to hear the pupils read aloud. Over the years I have developed my teaching including more activities were pupils are more active and communicate directly with each other. Through these first months of the course I have realized that I have to go further down this route. The necessity... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meaning, as long as their pronunciation are clear and they speak with correct clauses it doesn't matter whether they speak one or another English. I haven't been aware of this fact and have always strived for British English. As a hole I see my role as an English teacher more as a facilitator and less the conventional teacher. When improving my teaching I think it is important to take small steps. Doing a little more or otherwise gradually. Thereby it is easier for me incorporate, maintain and develop. By making it a routine before heading on doesn't feel like it's so much work. The goal is to expand my toolbox of activities to be a more competent English teacher. So far, this English course have only lasted for three months, but I have already learned a lot that challenge my way of teaching and my thinking around the subject. I have taken small steps in daily routine to incorporate English, and I'm planning to do more. Further, have I changed my lessons to contain several activities targeting communication and collocation, and finally, I have changed the way I look at teaching English. The disturbances I felt in the beginning is still a part of it all. Discovering your own incompetence is never pleasant, but I believe that excitement will take its place before the course is ... Growing up we almost always swear that going to school is the worst possible thing our parents could ever make us do. We thought of it as a punishment rather than a privilege. I had these same emotions majority of my school career, until I met the one teacher who made me excited to come to school every day. • 6. Literacy Is Not Only A Problem That The English Teacher Times are changing. Literacy is not only a problem that the English teacher has to deal with. Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write (Oxford Dictionaries). However, you have to use different skills to read a novel than you do with reading a science question. So it only makes that literacy should be taught in different ways for each different subject. It does a student no good to be able to physically read a science question but have no idea what it's asking for. The last five years have seen unprecedented attention given to the literacy achievement of adolescents in secondary schools in the United States. Spurred by the release of flat or declining reading scores on national tests. (Donahue, Daane & Grigg, 2003). This could be easily linked to a lack of literacy techniques being taught in schools. Some English teachers might even argue that their content focuses more on rhetorical devices and composition rather than learning to read and write. Some teachers may say that they need to focus more on content than literacy strategies. However, simple literacy strategies can be taught that we will help students understand the content even greater. For example, a higher level literacy thinking skill is being able to properly label diagrams and maps. If a student cannot understand how to read a map of Europe they simple will not do well in a history class. Some teachers might not realize that they are teaching literacy skills by teaching a student how to read a map ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Senior Year AP English Teacher My senior year AP English teacher is well known throughout the school for being the hardest grading teacher there is. An argumentative research paper comprises a significant part of our grade. Although he assigned us the research paper at the beginning of the year, most people procrastinated until it was due in two weeks. I along with handful of people had finished and turned it in two weeks before the due date. My teacher quickly reviewed my essay and said to the class that I had written a good paper. This prompted a wake–up call for the whole entire class. Word spread, and I found myself surrounded by many people who desperately needed my help. • 8. Advantages And Disadvantages Of English Teacher As the world today becomes more and more globalised, the knowledge of the English language also becomes more important to be able to communicate well. And upon having approximately 380 million native speakers of English and more than 700 non–native speakers of English all over the world, (English Language Guide, 2008) others, and I myself see that as an advantage and once thought that studying to be an English teacher in the future has a lot of opportunities and you can easily have a job no matter where you go especially demand for English teachers worldwide is skyrocketing. But after doing some research, I realized that there have been numerous debates and controversies about who are better teachers of the English language. There are also... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would like to highlight three which are: (1) they lack communicative competence, (2) they do not the fluency, and (3) they cannot use the English language as creative as native speakers do. First and foremost, non–native speakers lack communicative competence as they often use English only in classroom contexts and with their fellow non–native colleagues and lack the contact to actual native English speakers (Braine, 1999). That might make their version of English outdated, incorrect or too formal (Medgyes, 1999). This might cause a certain insecurity in their use of the English language and a feeling to defend themselves as teachers. This insecurity may affect their teaching style, thus may also have a negative impact on the students learning process as those perceive the teacher's uncertainty as a lack of knowledge and competence. Their teaching behavior might also decrease the students' motivation as they perceive their teacher as unable and ignorant (Braine, 1999). Second is about non–native speakers do not have the fluency, general language proficiency and cultural knowledge as native speakers have, which means that they are not as secure and flexible in language use (Braine, 1999). Lastly, non–native teachers cannot use the English language as creatively as their native colleagues do. They have problems understanding jokes and analysing or interpreting texts, (Braine, 1999) which makes them somewhat less capable of teaching their students those aspects of the language which will be useful or even necessary in ... The love of the English language is the basis of the will to be an English teacher because for me, to succeed in something you need to love it first. English is a fascinating language and it is the most widely spoken language globally. It is used mostly every field from aviation, teaching, science and so on. it has a deep history with many wonderful poets and linguists who made this language great such us, William Shakespeare and Noam Chomsky. The findings discussed in the previous chapter show that: In both theory and application, the differentiated instruction has its own great benefits, especially it is used to engage the students in learning, motivate them as well as create interesting learning atmosphere which altogether lead to the improvement in their learning and achieve the goal of learning However, to use it successfully, teachers need to combine with other methods to maximize the advantages and minimize the disadvantages of this method because as the feedbacks from teachers earlier, differentiated instruction is very difficult and complicated to use frequently. It is so time–consuming from the moment teachers receive the group of students, they need to do a thorough need analysis, spend more time analyzing and thinking the suitable activities for their students. • 15. My Philosophy Of Writing : My High School English Teacher "There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed." This is in my top five favorite quotes. My high school English teacher introduced me to this quote from Ernest Hemingway during one of her lectures. Mrs. Rothe and I were really close and this was also one of her favorite quotes. She had us read the Old Man in the Sea; one of Hemingway's famous writings. Mrs. Rothe was my English teacher for three years and she taught me how to write well and love it at the same time. Certain teachers have the gift of inspiring kids to be great. While there are many examples of teachers who have not convinced students to stay in school and become drop–outs, such as rapper Marshal Mathers and billionaire Bill Gates, there are many examples of teachers who empower students to go to the next level, such as news anchor Brian Williams and President Bill Clinton. Williams credits his English literature teacher, Mr. Bob Kitzin, for turning his life around. Thanks to Mrs. Rothe, my perspective onwriting has changed dramatically. Most of my inspiration for my writings comes from her. I give her a lot of credit for the student and writer I am today. I believe every student should have a teacher like my high school English teacher in their life that can be a mentor and can navigate you down the best path to success in your education and professorial careers. School Grade English Language Arts And Reading Teacher As a newly graduated teacher, I was beyond grateful when I received that phone call asking if I would like to accept the position as a Hubbard Middle School sixth grade English Language Arts and Reading teacher. After accepting the position, I spent weeks planning for those bright faces to walk into my classroom door and for my world to be forever changed. How would I manage their behavior? Would I allow them to go to the restroom during class? Throughout the summer, leading up to the first day that I would go from a student to a teacher and be in charge of one hundred budding minds and personalities, I lined out everything I needed to have a successful first week. Supplies were sorted into bins, lesson plans were submitted, and copies of get–to–know–you games were made. All through college I heard that the amount I had learned all those year in college wouldn't compare to the amount I would learn my first year teaching. I was prepared to be a life–long learner, but I didn't want anything to come as a surprise. Once that door shut, all responsibility would rest on my shoulders. As the year went on, not wanting to jinx myself by saying it out loud, I thought that what they had told me about my first year teaching being the hardest year of my life must have skipped right over me. If teachers act as the "language police" in their classrooms, how do they decide what is considered a violation and what is considered within acceptable bounds? Who decides what language is within the acceptable bounds? When teachers avoid being "language cops," are they hurting their students by deemphasizing standard English that is prominent in the world? These are questions that need to be acknowledged by educators in order for there to be a significant change in how students' home languages are perceived and welcomed into the curriculum. I think the answer to whether or not teachers should be "language cops" rests somewhere in the middle. Another question that comes to mind is, when do teachers allow students to express themselves using their home language and when do they make the shift to teaching students the way to construct the "cash language" that they will need to use inside and outside of the classroom? As a perspective teacher, I have learned numerous ways that we can welcome students' own voices in the classroom to express their thoughts and feelings. Does English teacher remember names of their students in large class? The answer of this question will lead to other problems that will be revealed in this paper. This mini research used interviews to find the answer. 3 EFL teachers from one public secondary school in Jambi, Indonesia participated in the study. 1.Introduction Teaching English in a large class is very challenging. It will be more difficult for teachers to make sure that students are engaging in their class. It is also very confusing to give objective marks for students since there are many names they have to remember. If there is no more option for teachers rather than teaching in large class, they have to start adjusting themselves in this new situation. Many theories suggest on how handling a large class, but the implementation of these theories will give different result for different condition. • 20. The Importance Of Activity Theory In English Language Arts... Activity system analysis is regarded as a method to capture the wholeness of the multi–mediational process of human activity (Engestrom, 1987). Additionally, as an analytical tool, activity theory also shapes the questions that researchers intend to explore and research methods that are adopted in their studies, for comprehensively obtaining information about participants' developmental processes (Yamagata–Lynch, 2010). With the awareness of the premise of activity theory to investigate individual teacher development, scholars in teacher education have used activity theory to study English language arts teacher development (e.g., Grossman et al., 1999; Grossman Valencia, Evans, Thompson, Martin, & Place, 2000; Jahreie & Ottesen, 2010; Newell, Gingrich & Johnson, 2001; Newell & Connors, 2011; Smagrinsky et al. ), as well as language teacher development (e.g., Ahn, 2011; Childs, 2011; Kim, 2011; Tasker, 2011; Smolcic, 2011). Grossman, Valencia, Evans, Thompson, Martin, and Place (2000) presented three cases of beginning English arts teachers from a more extensive longitudinal study. All three beginning teachers were graduated from either Master's programs of elementary and secondary teacher education and were followed by researchers from their student teaching into their first three years of full–time teaching. Everyone bombed the first essay, the class got 24.5 out of 40 except one student who got 26. We were so shocked that around two of his expository class got the same grade. Later finding out that he let his college student to help him grade. I was living in fear now. If I could not pass his essays and participation, I'm not going to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Ponyboy And The English Teacher Summary Ponyboy and The English Teacher Summary: I started out as a kid that doesn't use his head with 6 good friends, but after a series of events I was left with 4. I got involved in a murder that Johnny committed and used Dally to hide from the law. After about 5 days Johnny decided enough was enough and that he had to confess. However, the church we were hiding in which used to be our safeplace went down in flames and dragged Johnny with it. After he said his last words to me in the hospital, Dally couldn't handle it and died outside of a grocery store. I couldn't take the thought of the ones I once held close gone so I went delirious. A concussion was the culprit. When my little episode ended I still couldn't go back to normal. My grades went down so far my english teacher had a talk with me. He said that I had one theme to do to higher my grade. That theme became the whole story and it was the best thing I could've ever written. Story: I had just finished my theme and was ready to turn it in. I'm hoping I'll get a good grade because if I don't I might have to leave school like Soda did. Darry sure won't allow that. My english teacher, Mr. Syme gave me a call yesterday. I don't know why; I was out. However, Darry got the call and said I have to come home as soon as possible tomorrow to call him back. I dialed the number and waited on the phone. Our phone was pretty old since it was my dads but it worked just fine. "Hello?" he answered "Hi. You rang earlier?" I said ... • 24. English Teacher Reflection Paper I initially sought to become an English as a foreign language teacher because it was the most attractive prospect of funding my dream to travel the world. When I first formally taught however in Mexico City however I realized my inexperience and general lack of understanding of the qualities required of a teaching meant I was effectively robbing my students of a proper value for their money. This is why I decided to complete this course and over three relatively short weeks I have learnt and grown a lot as a teacher. My first lesson was the in the follow of managing the classroom and how effective management can be used to stimulate learning, my second lesson came in the form of understanding how to properly utilize the whiteboard as a tool to get instructions across to the students while helping me minimize my teacher talk time. I think however the most important thing I have learnt is that in order to be an effective teacher you have to have your student's best interest at heart and be willing to go the extra mile for them. What is a good teacher? Despite taking this course I don't think my idea of what a good teacher is has changed as I have always believed that a good teacher should be someone who not only have a strong understanding about the materials being presented but a effective delivery system of that material as well. What I mean by this is that a good teacher is one that is able to impart knowledge onto his students in such a way as to make the students excited to want to learn and a very effective way in which I have seen that done is by associating all lessons as much as possible with the student's everyday like so they can make the connection between what they are learning and its use in the real world as the biggest hurdle to learning in my opinion is often the disconnect between the materials being taught and its application in your everyday life. Strengths and Weaknesses When I taught for the first time I was terrified, I was concerned that everything that could go wrong would go wrong and as I went through the material I had prepared I felt like that was the case as I forgot students names, didn't make my instructions clear enough at times and did a mediocre job at managing the ... • 25. My Identities Of Being An English Language Teacher my identity of being an English language teacher pushed me to be accurate about the information I delivered to my students. At that time, every English teacher was required to teach "Standard English". My understanding of "Standard" was "Standard" grammar and "Standard" pronunciation since these areas were constantly tested by the university as well as by the Board of Higher Education. I thought I would never achieve this political expectation because I could stick to the grammar book but I could not force my students to speak English the same way to make their English "Standard". As a teacher, I care about speaking because I believe that an important reason of learning a language is to freely talk to people who speak the language. Although speaking naturally occurs to native speakers of the language, it is a challenge to speakers who are learning English as a second or foreign language. For this reason, I encouraged my students to participate in classroom discussions as well as in after–school English Corner where English was practiced orally. I was tolerable about students' different pronunciations, intonations and dialect–intermingled Englishes (some students speak their local Chinese dialects and this affects their English pronunciation). I would only correct them when their pronunciation and word stress caused misunderstanding. The philosophy underpinning my language paradigm was that I intended to allow "linguistic and social differences" (Duke, 2011, p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. What I Would Do as an English Teacher Even though I have yet to begin my teaching career, I have had some amazing teachers and some teachers who I did not work well with. Through my educational career, I have seen what tactics I find to be helpful and I have seen learning strategies that have hindered the learning process. I have also discovered what I believe the purpose of education is. The purpose of education is to teach students about their past, inform them about their present and prepare them for their future. Education should enlist the talents of great thinkers and great authors in order to help create the foundation on which the students will begin their educational journey. After those lessons are learned, the students should be able to build on those findings and further their own educational journey. I always found learning to be more exciting whenever I was learning something that pertained to my interests. As an educator, it is my job to challenge the students in a way that is not detrimental to their education, but instead will enrich their lives and their future. By zeroing in on the students' strengths and interests, I can help students create a post–secondary path that will be the starting point for their imminent future. Instead of teaching all subjects equally, I believe that students should be allowed to learn the basics and then focus in on one or two subjects. Teaching English will let me teach some of the great novels, both past and present, which focus on the different time periods, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Teaching English : The Teacher Of The English Language "In the end we all long for a way to connect with others and be heard, words enable us to do that." This is what Lisa, the teacher of the ESL class, told me after I asked her why it was so important for her to teach English. Mrs. Lisa is very passionate about her job and with only nine days of knowing her, I realized what a big heart she has. She cares so much about the students and her main goal is always to help them in any way she can. I believe that her passion to teach also inspires the students she teaches. The seven students I observed in the English as a Second Language class work hard and have a lot of determination to reach their goals. The students are learning English to fit in and be able to express their opinions to others, and the teacher does a lot of extra things to make that possible. By watching them, I realized how important education is for these students. In my interviews most students said that they want a better future for themselves and their families. The effort put into this ELS class by students and the teacher made me realize that this class is so much more to them then purely learning English. Preconceptions Even though I had never attended the ESL classes before, I had heard a lot about them from my mom. But there was one teacher who impacted my life in ways I never thought were possible. This teacher was my eighth grade English teacher. Yes I know you are all going, "You're English teacher? No way." Yes way!! I was honestly my English teacher who had the most impact on my life. Now, it wasn't exactly for what she taught me in class: dissecting sentences or finding different types of verbs or identifying the subject or doing lots of in depth research. Well I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I did not cheat on my exam. This teacher had found enough trust in me that she was willing to let me take my exam from the comfort of my own bed. I couldn't go behind her back and just break that bond of trust I had worked so hard to make. No one was watching and she would've never known, but I couldn't live with the guilt that would've feeled me every single time I looked her in the eyes. I have discovered that most of my students are rather passive in answering questions, where responding is often not voluntarily. Thus, little oral feedback is received from the students. Many have low confidence in their ability to speak without prior planning, therefore, there is no immediate response to teacher's question and this is because "listening to teacher" has been their most frequent classroom experience rather than answering. Most of the students sit looking straight ahead using minimal facial expressions, verbal utterances and avoid any eye–contact with the teacher, often the feedbacks I would receive is the simple nods and shakes of their head. Furthermore, Student would never ask the teacher questions during the lesson, however, they would come and ask after the lesson in the one–on–one situation. Most of my students enjoyed inadequate speaking opportunities in classroom but when it comes to class discussion, they would not participate nor comments. In most other classes that I have observed, the teacher would address the class as a whole with few questions to check their understandings. • 37. Persuasive Essay : Why English Teachers Matter? Why English Teachers Matter They don't. English teachers are some of the least hardworking people. They teach a subject that nearly all of the school doesn't care about. Unlike the Math or Sciences, they don't hold any merit in real life. They don't prepare us for anything nor do they advance our knowledge. I can understand why something like Social Studies would exist as that means we won't make mistakes that have been made in history or that we will have a better understanding of the humanities and how people work. But what does English contribute? Nothing. English teachers sit there and pretend as if what they teach is important, but it simply isn't. When, in my life, am I ever going to need to read a complex piece of text? When, in my life, will I ever face a point where reading carefully through a document would affect my future? Never. When would I ever need to understand "what the author" is thinking? The only times that is useful is for passing English, and nothing else. There is no need to understand the tone of anything, nor the mood or the voice. There simply isn't a point to it. When, in the entirety of the world, has someone ever need to understand the "subtext" of a conversation. It simply isn't things that are useful to us. My school has fully adopted the guided reading program within the past 2 years. A guided reading library and books for professional development have been purchased, but very little training has occurred. The journey of learning how to successfully teach Reading using Jan Richardson's approach to guided reading has been a challenge to say the least. Scheduling has been the largest obstacle I have faced in implementing guided reading in my classroom. I have spent this summer researching and reading about guided reading in an attempt to gain further understanding of the process and the outcomes before the next school year begins. Guided reading is a method of teaching reading that be used with every reader, whether they are just beginning to read, struggling to read, or are able to read independently (Iaquinta, 2006). According to Anita Iaquinta, there are three fundamental purposes for using guided reading. The first fundamental purpose is to meet all of the ranges of instructional needs of every student in the classroom. The second fundamental purpose for guided reading is that it enables students to significantly build and expand their reading abilities. The final fundamental purpose of guided reading is for students to learn how to read increasingly difficult texts (Iaquinta, 2006). Guided reading lessons are completed in small groups ...
