Atlanta Zoo Research Paper
Being a second grader, the Atlanta Zoo was an alternate universe. Traveling with my Girl Scout troup caused lots of chattering and giggling. We
found ourselves starting out with the flamingo exhibit. Being the morning, the flamingos were very active and showed off their brightly colored
pink feathers to me. Moving on we visited all other kinds of birds like the Ground Hornbill, Lappet faced Vulture, Cassowary, Kookaburra, and
many more. I could not believe how many birds there were and all with different markings. After gazing above tree we decided to look down inside
the rocks at a Giant Tortoise. The shell helped to camouflage the big tortoise well, but not well enough for we soon caught sight of him. After seeing
some of the coolest animals

Modern Birds : The Neornithes
Our modern birds, the Neornithes, has been divided into two "super–orders," the Palaeognathae (ratites and tinamous) and the Neognathae (other bird
orders). Palaeognathae itself is divided into two orders, the Strathioniformes and Tinamiformes. There are five extant species and two extinct species in
the Strathioniformes, or the ratites. In total, there are at least 30 species within the ratites family. 16 of these species are now extinct. The rest of the
extant species make up only 0.1% of the total bird species in the world.
Ratites are generally a group of large, flightless birds. Even though they have lost the ability to fly, ratites have gained powerful legs that are able to
carry them away quickly from predators. Ratites has usually undergone a reduction in wing bones, either in the size and development of the wings, or
alterations to the number of actual bones. The exception to this is the African ostrich, who do have prominent wings, which are only used in the act of
courtship or to distract predators. Here in New Zealand, we have one extant family of ratites, the Apterygidae, or more commonly known as the Kiwi.
Unfortunately, the other family member of ratites in New Zealand, the Dinornithiformes or the Moa, are all extinct.
There are five species of Kiwi in New Zealand. They are all native and, unfortunately, all endangered. The five species are; the Little Spotted Kiwi
(Apteryx owenii), the Great Spotted Kiwi (A. haastii), the Brown Kiwi (A.mantelli), the Rowi

Snout's On Patrol Analysis
Snout's on Patrol Did you know there are pigs that work at airports? I'm one. My name is Snout. I'm an airport pest control pig. I look for birds that
are living in the tall grass and bushes near the runways at the airport. Birds can cause problems for planes. If they come too close to one, they can
run into it or fly into the engines. I help keep people and birds safe. I have a fabulous sense of smell, and I'm very smart. I can figure out where the
birds are from their scent. Here's what happened today. 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. My trainer Joe and I patrolled the grass and bushes along runways 1
through 5. Many birds come to these brushy areas to build their nests, and also because there are seeds, insects, and berries to eat. It was a quiet

The Girl Who Gets Gifts From Birds
Over the course of many years, people and animals have shared a critical connection. Such as, how animals have been used for medical use,
transportation, and comfort. Over the past couple weeks, I have studied how people are animal allies. People and animals share similar behaviors,
bonds, and how they help each other. To start out, People and animals relate to each other by sharing similar behaviors. To began with, humans
animals enjoy the same comforts we do. According to the selection, "from My Life With the Chimpanzees," Dr. Goodall writes "Chimps like their
comfort!" just like humans enjoy their comfort (Goodall 105.25). Goodall observed that chimps sleep at night just as we do. Goodall noticed Chimps
making beds using branches. They even made pillows! The chimps used"...small leafy twigs to make a pillow." (Goodall 105.25)... Show more content

People and animals can form special bonds. In "The Girl Who Gets Gifts From Birds" Katy Sewall tells about a girl who gets gifts from crows."It
was after this routine that the gifts started appearing."(Sewall par. 13) The main character, Gabi, feeds the crows in her backyard on a daily basis
along with her mom's help. After doing this for a while the crows began leaving little "trinkets" in the bird feeders such as buttons, lego pieces, shiny
object, and other miscellaneous items. One day Gabi's mom loses her cameras lens cap. Amazingly, the lens cap is returned rinsed by a crow caught on

Parrot Monologue
On reaching his plane seat a man is surprised to see a parrot strapped in next to him. He asks the stewardess for a coffee where upon the parrot squawks
"And get me a whisky you cow!" The stewardess, flustered, brings back a whisky for the parrot and forgets the coffee.
When this omission is pointed out to her the parrot drains its glass and bawls "And get me another whisky you idiot". Quite upset, the girl comes back
shaking with another whisky but still no coffee.
Unaccustomed to such slackness the man tries the parrot's approach "I've asked you twice for a coffee, go and get it now or I'll kick you".
The next moment, both he and the parrot have been wrenched up and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly stewards. ... Show more content on

that would make a veteran sailor blush.
At that point, the guy is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer. For the first few seconds there is a terrible din. The bird kicks and claws and
thrashes. Then it suddenly gets_very_quiet.
At first the guy just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt. After a couple of minutes of silence, he's so worried that he opens up
the freezer door. The bird calmly climbs onto the man's out–stretched arm and says, "Awfully sorry about the trouble I gave you. I'll do my best to

The Myth Behind the Singing and Chirping of Birds
Since the beginning of time, people have always wondered why birds sing and chirp. The answer lies in "The Legend of the Birds." Here is how it
goes... Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a tree that reached to the heavens. Inside this tree there lived all the birds in the world of
different breeds, color, shapes, and sizes. Now each bird lived peacefully in the tree speaking the language that humans do today. The flock of the
birds included laws about obeying the rules, how to act, and the most important rule, which was to never travel to the land of the Pandas,
Pandaria. There was a bird by the name of Duck who loathed these rules because he thought it was unfair to not be able to travel to the land of the
Pandas. After all, what would a panda do to them? So it all started when Duck broke the law of the birds. Duck had always been curious what is at the
land of the Pandas. He decided the rule of the birds was dumb and decided to go and check out the Panda's place. So Duck flew a long way from his
home until he finally reached a large area filled with bamboo. The large pointed bamboo made Duck uncertain for a little while, but then he decided
he wasn't about to chicken out and flew right in. Right on time, Duck noticed some Panda maidens and sneakily flew over them without being seen.
Out of the corner of his eye, Duck noticed a grand room guarded by many Panda warriors. He decided to check it out without making any noise; he
flew right over the warriors

Essay on Margaret Laurence's A Bird in the House
Margaret Laurence's A Bird in the House
Margaret Laurence's A Bird in the House differentiates itself from the four other novels that make up the 'Manawaka series' that has helped establish
her as an icon of Canadian literature. It does not present a single story; instead, it is a compilation of eight well–crafted short stories (written between
the years 1962 and 1970) that intertwine and combine into a single narrative, working as a whole without losing the essential independence of the parts.
It tells – at least on a surface level – of the childhood of a young girl named Vanessa MacLeod , and of her trials and tribulations in the small
Manitoban town of Manawaka. The narrative style of the stories is important, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most importantly, it is a story of captivity, of failed attempts at freedom, and of one woman's partial escape from the constraints of her family, home,
and past.
There is a single symbol that encapsulates the majority of these notions throughout the entirety of the book: the bird, the bird in the house, the bird
"caught between the two layers of glass" that so changes Vanessa's life. Birds make too frequent and deliberate an appearance throughout the collection
of short stories to be mere haphazard additions to the background; instead, they, along with the images and concepts associated with them, serve to alert
the aware reader to what Margaret Laurence, through older–Vanessa, through child–Vanessa, is trying to tell us. The birds, and their associated images,
are central and representative of the novel as a whole.
There are encounters with several birds throughout the majority of the stories: there is, of course, the sparrow that predicts Ewen MacLeod's death;
there is Grandmother Connor's perpetually silent canary, Birdy; there are the hauntingly–voiced loons in the appropriately named story 'The Loons'.
They make subtler appearances as well: Grandmother MacLeod's hair is once described as 'white–feathered wings in [a] snare'2; there is the blue
Chinese carpet 'with its birds in eternal motionless flight'(p. 47); the ladybird that climbs, falls, and climbs again, despite its ability to fly.

Animal Imagery In Timothy Findley's The Wars Essay
Animal Imagery In Timothy Findley's The Wars
Works Cited Missing
The abundant animal imagery in Timothy Findley's book The Wars is used to develop characterization and theme. The protagonist, Robert Ross, has a
deep connection with animals that reflects his personality and the situations that he faces. This link between Robert and the animals shows the reader
that human nature is not much different than animal nature.
The animals in this story are closely related to the characters, especially the character of Robert. Rodwell acknowledges Robert's close union with
animals when he draws Robert in his sketchbook as "the only human form" among sketches of animals (155). When Robert sees the drawing, he notices
that "the shading [is] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the horses breaks its leg and Robert is ordered to kill it. He shoots it once, but the horse is still alive and its mane is described as "a tangle of
rattlesnakes" (68). The snakes symbolize the feelings of immorality that are welling up inside of Robert. He knows that killing an animal is against
his moral values, but his role in the army is more important to him. He feels that he has "to show his nerve and ability as an officer" (66). Robert
finally shoots the horse behind its ear and kills it. This is the first time he intentionally kills a living creature in the story.
Robert's ethics return to him and take priority over military obedience when he tries to rescue horses from the cruelties of war. Robert disobeys
Captain Leather's orders and tries to free the horses from the barn that is threatened by falling shells. Unfortunately, the horses die before he can save
them all and Robert is filled with anger, shooting Captain Leather between the eyes for causing their death. From this moment on, he rebels against
anyone who does not respect his love for animals. This rebellion continues when he barricades himself in a barn with the horses and shouts, "[w]e
shall not be taken" (212). It is Robert's strong connection with the horses that leads to his downfall, because the "we" implies to Major Mickle that
Robert has an accomplice, and for that reason an attack is ordered. Robert burns

Use Of Birds In Poetry
The use of nature in poetry and stories has a long history in Ireland going back to the early use of bird song to describe divine messages. (Melia,
1999). The natural world gives writers the ability to communicate expression through the use as symbols and Celtic traditions describe how animals
and birds were important parts of society. The use of natural world subjects give a poet such as Oscar Wilde the inspiration for some of his best works
in poetry and short story. Oscar Wilde's use of birds and how they are used throughout his writings show great examples of the use of the natural world.
The connection to nature in Irish literature can be shown by examining some of Oscar Wilde's most important works such as The Nightingale and the
Rose and The Happy Prince as well as poems such as Magdalen Walks. Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet who was born in Dublin Ireland and lived from
1854–1900. throughout his life Oscar Wilde wrote many poems and short stories. Some of his most endearing short stories were fairytales for young
children and were told using birds, animals and nature. Oscar Wilde's descriptive writing style was very beautiful and in the Nightingale and the Rose

How Does Hitchcock Use Suspense In The Birds
The birds compare and contrast essay While reading/watching both du Maurier's " The Birds" and Hitchcock's The Birds, they both used suspense to
enhance the story/plot. However, Hitchcock's does a better job at creating and utilizing the element of suspense using pace, timing, and continuity.
Alfred Hitchcock uses suspense by slowing the movie down so it makes the audience wait and wait until the climax appears and gives a more
dramatic feeling. For example in the scene were the number of birds keep on increasing as Melanie Daniels innocently sits on the bench next to the
school. This is suspenseful because as she sits we see the birds rapidly increasing but she is completely clueless. Thus in du Maurier's " The Birds"
she does not use the slow suspense in fact she has action in the begging of her story. For example, "children flung themselves, screaming, upon him,
while in the darkness the birds rose and dived and came for him again." (Page5). This shows that she goes straight out and doesn't keep the action ...

For instance, when all the birds came fluttering out of the chimney exactly when you think they would. This is suspenseful because you could hear
sound of suicide birds hitting the house and you knew something was going to happen. This was not shown by du Maurier's story because she used
very detailed descriptions and each part of the story followed a sequence. For example when she explains that Jill was being attacked and then
another room was attacked and so forth. This is shown when she writes, "Nat lit the candle, but when he opened the bedroom door to cross the
passage the draft blew out the flame. There came a second cry of terror, this time from both children" (4). This explains that she couldn't use timing
because it was a book but she instead wrote horrifying events that led up to one big one. Therefor Alfred's The Birds, was more

What Is The Theme Of Cinderella
people just think of books as a form of entertainment, but humans can actually learn from them. For example: Grimm's version of "Cinderella,"
published in 1812, was a favorite tale among children in Germany. Disney's reproduction of "Cinderella," published in 1950, was a popular movie
among kids in America. Italy's translation of "Cinderella," published in 1885, was favored story among families in Italy. In each version of "Cinderella,"
– Grimm, Disney, and Italy– one greater theme stands out among all others.
In the Grimm story of "Cinderella", there is one vital theme: hate and contempt will get you nowhere in life, when it is simple to be kind. Furthermore,
here is some background information before the support to this theme. The king announced a festival for his prince to meet a bride, Cinderella's
step–mom says to her that she is not coming, she goes to the tree at her mother's grave and asks the dove there for the same beautiful dress every
night, she meets the prince at the ball, loses her slipper, prince uses the slipper to find Cinderella, and she tries it on and gets engaged to the prince. In
addition to the background information, the support to the theme is when at Cinderella's wedding, her step–sisters get their eyes pecked out, of
because of how mean they are to Cinderella(7). Now, this story was written in Germany in 1812. Correspondingly, the theme was important to kids
during that time in Germany because they didn't have any type of entertainment during

Emily Dickinson Poetry Analysis
Emily Dickinson began her life as an invested student with her own ideas and beliefs in a time in which no women was allowed to have valid
opinions. Her unique ideas and mentality eventually led her to be kicked out of her school and though she did travel she was forced to eventually
come back to her home in order to take care of her mother and their land. Dickinson lived on her family's land for the majority of her life, and along
with her sister took care of the property. In this time Dickinson was not only able to observe the intimate lives of humans, especially the ending of the
human life, but also the perfectly detailed world around her. Dickinson became very interested in the world around her to the point of studying botany in

The first stage in which the young girl is happy, and excited by all the world has to offer, the second stage represents when the girl begins to grow
up and look for a person to spend her life with. This is expressed in the poem as Dickinson writes "An april but begun." A robin's mating season
begins in April showing how the second phase is meant to represent love and childbirth. The last phase is one that represents the peaceful joy of old
age. Whether the robin in the nest or the woman in her home, both realize that the joy found in a home is the best.
In the poem "Before I Got My Eye Put Out," Dickinson discusses, instead of a specific bird, the motions and movements that all birds make. Through
this, Dickinson begins to describe all of the beauty in the world that she was able to see. Her enjoyment of the graceful motions that birds make is
evident throughout the poem. In this poem, though only mentioned once, the reader is aware of the importance that the bird species holds in
Dickinson's heart. The reader is able to see "the speaker's wonder and awe of the world." The speaker also appears to use "the motions of the dipping
birds" to show the infinite. The repetition that birds' wings make as they fly are continuously repeated and create a sense of timelessness and infiness
within the poem.
"To Hear an Oriole Sing," is another poem that Dickinson has wrote(Nature, Poem 12). In this poem

Comparing Doerr's Obsession With Birds
Both Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See and Emily Dickinson's "'Hope is the the thing with feathers" make use of bird imagery. Doerr's
novel follows the parallel lives of a blind French girl and a young German boy, as their lives intertwine as World War Two unfolds around them.
Frederick, a character in All the Light We Cannot See, exhibits an obsession with birds, which reflects his desire for freedom. His desire is never
satisfied, as his character meets a restricting, dismal future. The speaker in "Hope is the the thing with feathers" describes the bird's attributes, which are
parallel to that of hope. Doerr and Dickinson both utilize birds as symbols, but each for dissimilar concepts. Doerr idealizes birds as the ultimate

altruistic producer of dreams and aspirations, through thick and thin. They provide hope out of selflessness. Hope is always present, but needs to be
wholeheartedly accepted by those who need it. Another purpose that birds serve in relation to hope, is constantly being present within people. Birds

Comparing Red Scarf Girls 'And To Kill A Mocking Bird'
All across the earth, in every society, every day injustices occur and the sufferers of these acts are silenced, rendered powerless. In Red Scarf Girls
and To Kill a Mocking Bird the main characters witness the persecution of innocent people in the Cultural Revolution in China and racism in southern
America. The Cultural Revolution was a sociopolitical movement against the "four olds" from 1966 to 1976 sparked by Mao Zedong when millions of
people faced a variety of abuses for their profession, education, wealth, and family past. Ji–Li Jiang, the main character of Red Scarf girl, grows up
during this period and tells the stories of her family and other targets. Scout is raised in the 1930's in Maycomb, Alabama where racism is rampant.

Argumentative Essay 'Animal Snoops'
Animal Intelligence Argumentative Essay Have you ever heard a parrot repeat what a human has said. Is this a sign of intelligence or is it mimic. I
believe that animals are intelligent. Animals use their intelligence to find food, a mate, and a home.
I believe this because in the passage "Animal Snoops" it tells about a parrot named Marshmallow eavesdropping on some robbers. When listening to
the robbers, he learned one of the robbers nicknames "JJ". When the robbers went to leave the bird shouted "JJ". The robbers left but then came back to
nab the bird. When they returned, the police was waiting for them. I think this this proves intelligence. But if this doesn't this will. Monkeys have

Summary Of ' The Bird Lady '
Joshua Samuel 7/31/14
The Bird Lady.
Old stuff aren 't just said to be old, it 's the new stuff that makes it old. Even to a girl in an orphanage seeing new things make me feel young and
happy. A white lotus might bring a smile on a poor man 's face and the world will seem to be in order. However, the main focus is on something that
is old. Never did I have an interest in something like this but because of an old lady, I do now.
The sun shined bright when I was walking on a sidewalk to a park. My normal routine and activities laid aside as I held my half eaten sandwich and
walked up the steps to the abandoned park. There was a plastic playground and a sandbox that was full of sand as if not used. I shivered as the wind
blew and I saw a really big acorn tree. The grass was turning yellow and I looked past the tree to see the pond. The pond was clear as I stood and
saw my reflection. I crouched down and as usual, I took my sandwich out and tore a piece and threw it in the water. In five minutes time, ducks
started to appear and eventually I ran out of food to give them. As I brushed my hands and stood up, I looked behind me and there was a little boy
behind me. At first the boy scared me because I thought it was an oversized duck that didn 't get his share of the sandwich but I felt nogalstic when he
said something.
"What are you doing?" he asked innocently. I replied to him smiling, "Feeding the ducks." He looked at me again and said, "Why?"

Initiation Sylvia Plath Essay
Chantal Chau
Analysis of a Key Passage,
Initiation by Sylvia Plath
In Initiation by Sylvia Plath, the author suggests that conformity and having friends is a wonderful idea, yet the idea of having an individual identity
and being an individual is stronger. In the excerpt, Millicent is slowly realizing that conforming and being a part of a sorority is not as exciting as it
sounds, and being an individual offers more opportunities to become a unique person.
Millicent is an average girl who no one really notices, when one day, a sorority group decides to allow her to join, but she must past their initiation test
first. At first, Millicent is ecstatic, and proud that she can finally be a part of society, but slowing, and in the beginning... Show more content on

In Millicent's mind, freedom and originality is described as "swooping carefree heather birds, they would go singing and cooing out across the
great spaces of air, dipping and darting, strong and proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness". Heather birds are a mythological animal,
meaning freedom has no defined description that originality does not exist in a solid form. They are described to be "swooping, carefree", meaning
there is no worry of being judged, and "dipping and darting, strong in their freedom" describes the happiness of a worry free life, where style and
opinions are not judged or withheld, unlike the "chirping", trapped, restrained sparrows which symbolize the sorority. Heather birds were "singing and
cooing out across the great spaces of air", showing that they could express their ideas and opinions without worry, though loneliness was a
consequence. In the excerpt, it was stated that the heather birds were "strong and proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness", meaning that
there will always be unique people in the world Millicent can relate to, though at times the individuality will stand out, and she will be alone.
Through this mental debate, Millicent learns discovers that she could enter her imaginary great hall through "her coronation as a princess labelling her
conclusively as one of the select flock", or use "other ways of getting into the great hall, blazing with lights, of people and

Personal Narrative-The Battle Of Linton Hollow
I am in mourning and shock. For twenty days, the hen house in my backyard lay under siege in what became known as The Battle of Linton Hollow.
Night after night, the chickens cowered in fear as hungry predators circled their coop searching for ways to get at them. By day, my wife and I
mended holes in the fencing and set traps, but in the end, there was nothing we could do to save them. It's hard to admit, but we were simply outwitted
by a craftier, more relentless, superior intelligence. The varmints that struck down our chickens one by one could have taught Colonel Sanders a thing
or two about "finger licking good." Once they honed in on the hen house location, and tasted the first chicken, there was no keeping them out of the
buffet line. The final casualty count read seven chicken lunches, seven raccoons, and three opossums. Although I would have... Show more content on

We did not skimp or plan it that way. In fact, we were excited when we first built the coop; we were proud of our handiwork and thought any
chicken would be honored to have such a great place to live. Little did we know varmints were lurking in the shadows licking their lips and
laughing at us. However, the twenty day siege taught us a few things about design, and as result, come spring, our backyard chicken coop will
undergo major renovations. Galvanized hardware cloth will replace the old 19 gauge chicken wire top to bottom. Rolls of 18 inch galvanized razor
wire will cover the top of the coop, and overlapping electric fencing will wrap around the perimeter of the coop and repel onslaughts from the sides.
The new design also calls for a four foot wide moat surrounding the enclosure. Of course, both raccoon and opossums are excellent swimmers, but a
wet varmint climbing over electrified fencing is about as good as it gets when it comes to turning a hungry determined varmint

I woke to the sound of my sister, Eos, making food in the kitchen. My cat, Lilac, was laying in the sun in the windowsill. "Morning Lilac." I said

bird laying on the ground. The bird was pure white, but I noticed the tip of one wing was red. I went into the kitchen and told Eos. "It might be

Metaphors In Domestic Birds
Another animal commonly kept as a pet is the bird. Common species of domestic birds include the muniya canary and the parakeet. Like the previous
pet names analyzed, these bird metaphors also concentrate the senses of small size, youth, domesticity and entertainment. In Hindi Urdu, the very
word bird is defined as a girl or a young woman (Webster). The metaphor is usually charged with affective connotations, being commonly used as a
term of endearment. This positive evaluation appears to have its roots in the amorous disposition of the animal as well as in the folk tradition that
associates birds with symbols of love (cf Talebinejad & Dastejerdi, 2005). In fact, the state of being in love of a couple is metaphorically instantiated by

The repertoire of metaphors designating women as pets reveals a clear imbalance in favor of terms of abuse. Indeed, with the exception of pet, bird and
in certain contexts billi (kitten), all the aforementioned metaphors analyzed convey negative evaluations. Moreover, interestingly, even within the
favorable animal terms, only kitten/gatita is restricted to females, since bird and pet are ambisexual in nature.
In the conceptualization of women as pets, youth and small size appear to play a determinant role in the encoding of the metaphor, implying
immaturity (the lack of age involves inexperience) and helplessness (unlike other animals, pets need to be looked after by people). Furthermore, the
physical surroundings of pets, whose whole life spins around the house, might imply the idea of domesticity. This confinement to the domestic arena is
particularly remarkable in the case of bird names, since birds are kept in

The Birds Attacking In The Movie : Alfred Hitchcock
This question has baffled filmmakers and audiences for decades. There is no clear answer on why the birds started attacking. The only person who
knows the real answer is Alfred Hitchcock himself. After doing some research on Alfred Hitchcock, I believe that Melanie is indeed the reason why
the birds attacked. Alfred Hitchcock saw the actor of Melanie Daniels, Tippi Hedren as his muse and wouldn't let any other person play the role. One
can tell how obsessed he was with her since she was in almost in every single shot. He saw her and the character Melanie as weak and inferior and
victimized both. Hitchcock wanted to make Melanie seem helpless against the bird attacks and as if she was the reason why the birds started attacking.
When Melanie first came to Bodega Bay one could clearly tell that she wasn't from there. She was dressed much more beautiful, than everybody
else and also very feminine, which made her appear fragile and out of place. Bodega Bay is a very small town and as most small towns they do not
like strangers, especially not strangers with a bad reputation like Melanie Davids. Rumors and assumptions spread rapidly in small towns like
Bodega Bay. When she first arrived at Bodega Bay, the man inside of the store and at the water front were staring at here and giving her strange
looks as if they couldn't believe that such a woman would come to bodega bay and made the audience feel as if she wasn't welcomed there. When
Melanie came back from the Brenner residents

Essay One With the Animals: Symbolism of the Animals in...
Animals come to represent, both purity and the relationship human beings have with the world. Animals play a key role in Timothy Findley's novel,
The Wars, whether it's for the interference, necessity, affection or compassion towards the characters. In The Wars, several characters share this close
bond with the animals, that serve to emphasize the different qualities of each character's personality. The animals connect with the main character,
Robert Ross, in ways that reflect his uncommon character and the obstacles that he faces throughout the war. Robert enlists into the army as a Canadian
soldier, shortly after the tragic death of his younger sister, Rowena. Throughout the novel, Robert grows a connection with the soldiers in the... Show

Robert sees the rabbits as innocent bystanders, in the middle of a war between human arrogance and complete madness. Rabbits reflect a defenseless
and pure Rowena, that Robert feels has been destroyed by the war. As the war goes on, the reader notices the appearance and thought of Rowena and
the rabbits slowly disappearing. "Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a rabbit beside the road. Then he heard a rush of wings. Something exploded.
The rabbit disappeared." (Findley 179) This was the last time Robert sees a rabbit, signifying the innocence once seen with his sister and her love for
the rabbits, becoming forever lost within him. "Everything was in there– including the picture of Rowena. Robert burned it in the middle of the floor.
This was not an act of anger– but an act of charity." (Findley 178) Robert Ross also shares a special bond with horses and a coyote. Roberts numerous
encounters with these animals, signify the step towards not understanding only the animals, however himself. Robert being a soldier learns the
importance of survival and the duty to kill. "Always to trust the horse's judgment above his own when it came to path–finding." (Findley 77) Yet from
the coyote and the horses, he learns to trust their guidance, during difficult times. For instance, when Robert is out following the coyote, the coyote
guides him to water that is safe to drink by barking three

Summary Of Initiation By Sylvia Plath
In the short story, "Initiation," by Sylvia Plath she uses symbolism to create meaning, express feeling and thoughts. One reason why the heather
birds symbolize freedom is because they are shown as individuals, that can be free to do whatever they want. Lying in bed on the morning of the Rat
Court Millicent thought of the heather birds. "Swooping carefree over the moors, they would go singing and crying out across the great spaces of air,
dipping and darting, strong and proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness" This quote shows that Millicent is thinking about how the
heather birds have freedom of expression. She wants to have the same abilities the heather birds have. Millicent is rethinking joining the sorority
because then she can't be friends with Tracy or getting asked out by a guy because of the way she is. The sorority would confine her to their ideals

As she lay in bed Millicent visualized the sparrows "pale gray–brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike"This quote portrays how the
social setting of the sorority is. All the sparrows being the same shows that all the girls are the same. Millicent realizes she doesn't want to be like
all the other girls. This realization impacts her decision to leave the sorority. The symbolism of the sparrows really helps to show what the sorority
is like. It also brings out the fact that although you would be popular would it really be worth it if you lost your individuality. The symbolism of the
sparrow birds also really helps the story to move along. Most importantly, later in the story, while Millicent is making a decision that will impact the
rest of her schooling life, she hears the heather birds singing their song of freedom in the back of her mind. But just then, from somewhere far off,
Millicent heard "a melodic fluting, quite wild and sweet, and she knew that it must be the

Theme Of The Sea In The Awakening
In a Victorian society, women are often conformed to the idea that they are nothing more than property to the men and carer of the children.
Throughout The Awakening by Kate Chopin, much of the deeper meaning in the story is revealed through a number of important symbols to
symbolize the rebellious behavior of Edna Pontellier, a girl who seeks the satisfaction of her own wants and needs. By doing this Edna is going
against the traditional role of women in a Victorian society. In the start of the novel, Edna engages in her self discovery by becoming more
independent and straying away from conventions. Throughout the novel, Edna participates in rebellious actions such as moving out of her house and
affairs with other men. Towards the end of the novel, Edna feels as though the only way to truly achieve freedom is by suicide. Edna's rebellious life is
represented through symbolism which... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Awakening,Kate Chopin uses the symbol, the sea, as a way to convey Edna's newly found strength and empowerment. The sea both
demonstrate the transformation of her body and transformation of her mind. Edna's swiming experience transforms her body during her awakening
by overcoming her fears. Learning to swim is an important experience because it shows how she is now able to gain control over her body. The
statement, "The voice of the sea speaks to the soul" (Chopin 18), is powerful due to the fact that it represents how Edna undergoes a dramatic change
in character. In order to express her innermost desires, she has to go from listening and acting upon the influences of society, to following her own
mind. The sea is also seen as a "seductive" voice that "invit[es] the soul to wander"(Chopin 25). The sea and its limitless potential invites Edna deep
into thought about life. These play a large part in understanding Edna's personal transformation from a quiet and fearful girl to an empowered and

Daisy Buchanan In The Great Gatsby
In the blistering winds of Antarctica, there lays a creature that relies on true love to survive. The penguin, is a flightless bird that has aquatic
capabilities and is unbothered by the frigid temperature of its habitat. Interestingly the penguin is one of the few animals that are monogamous; In fact,
they can die from a broken heart after their chosen mate dies. These animalistic characteristics seem to be portrayed throughout Gatsby's character, he
acts in manner as if Daisy were to not love him, he would die. In the book The Great Gatsby By F.Scott Fitzgerald, the main character Jay Gatsby

Initially Gatsby wants to be just like the rich people. He begins works for a rich man on his yacht, changes his name and takes a new identity, but
later on he changes his mind. He realizes that this upper class world was not meant for him, that this world was cruel. In the end he would see just
how much he does not belong in this world when he is shot in the back, ironically when he is enjoying the riches of his stolen wealth. One out of
the ordinary thing he does is host parties, but never enjoys them. It may seem to the reader as though he hosts them just so he can fit in with the
crowed, but in his point of view he hosts them for a completely different reason. In reality he hosts these extravagant parties in hopes that maybe
one day Daisy, his one true love, would come. Just like how he had bought the house right across from her so he could stay away but not too far.
He wants so badly to be apart of the upper class, but the only reason he wants it is because he thinks it will come with Daisies love. Jordan Baker, the
pro golfer says "Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay" (Fitzgerald 95)

Animal Imagery in the Wars Essays
The abundant animal imagery in Timothy Findley's book The Wars is used to develop characterization and theme. The protagonist, Robert Ross, has a
deep connection with animals that reflects his personality and the situations that he faces. This link between Robert and the animals shows the reader
that human nature is not much different than animal nature.
The animals in this story are closely related to the characters, especially the character of Robert. Rodwell acknowledges Robert's close union with
animals when he draws Robert in his sketchbook as "the only human form" among sketches of animals (155). When Robert sees the drawing, he notices
that "the shading [is] not quite human"; it is a combination of animal and human qualities, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Birds appear frequently throughout the story, especially in times of crisis. The birds often present themselves as omens for dangers that lie ahead. For
instance, when Robert's team takes a wrong turn, "the fog is full of noises" of birds (80). Then the birds fly out of the ditch and disappear. Robert and
Poole know that "[t]here must be something terribly wrong...but neither one knew how to put it into words. The birds, being gone, had taken some
mysterious presence with them. There was an awful sense of void––as if the world had been emptied" (81). The birds return and when Robert nears the
collapsing dike, "one of the birds [flies] up and cut[s] across Robert's path" as if it is trying to prevent him from going any further. Robert does not
heed the warning and almost dies in the sinking mud.
Another ominous bird appears when Robert and his crew are close to enemy lines. A bird sings and Robert looks up to see the deadly gas easing
towards them. He is able to react quickly and save most of his crew. Soon after, the same bird sings again, "one long note descending; three that
[waver]" (142). Then Robert sees the German soldier whom he ends up killing when he thinks that the man is reaching for a gun. Robert realizes that
the German was only reaching for his binoculars, even though there is a sniper rifle sitting right beside him. He wonders why the man did not kill them
all, and then he hears the bird sing once again, its song wavering "on the

Bullying
What is bullying? Bullying is everywhere. It is a horrible activity that destroys people's happiness and life. Bullying is very negative and creates major
problems for our society. Nothing good comes out of bullying. In fact, it ruins many people's lives. Kids can be mentally scarred if they are teased often.
Even worse, they can be killed or fatally injured if the bullying gets extreme. Bullying must be stopped or prevented no matter how long it will take;
it is a deeply concerning matter. Bullying does not always have to be childish play, but it can be extremely violent. People may be bruised, injured, or
even killed. There are so many different kinds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However; in this article, there is an important point that we should look back is that one girl stood up to a group of guys who were picking on the
Bird. That is a good deed we should learned to stand up or against the group of bad people who always tease other people in a wrong way.
Bullies themselves sometimes deliberately hurt other children physically. "Rowing the bus"– Paul Logan, is one of examples about bullying when it
gets worse. The author wrote about his life when he was in elementary school. He was a "perfect target" for the others kids to tease. He was made
to row the bus. "...on the way to school I had to sit in the dirty bus aisle littered with paper, gum wads, and spitballs" that was what he was forced to
do by a group of bullies in his school. He was a small boy and had no father so that his mother had to work very hard to support him. He used to
wear the clothes that his mother got from the donation at a local church. He feared that he might wear the clothes that used to belong with his
classmates. A problem he faced at school was that he had a hard time to learn to say the "s" sound properly and "pronounced words that began with
"th" as if they began with a "d.". He would become a target that everyone would laugh at him. "For four years, from second to fifth grade, I prayed
nightly for God to give me school days in which I would not be insulted, embarrassed, or made to feel ashamed" that was what he was doing every

Analysis Of 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance'
1. The Man who shot liberty valance Tom Doniphon, the outlaw hero, shot Liberty Valance To protect Hallie and Ransom Stoddard because he
knew that Ransom is the right future for his town and Hallie, even though Ransom views contradict with Toms views and wishes. Throughout the
movie there is a clear message; wilderness V. civilization. Shine bow, Tom, Liberty, etc., portraying the wilderness and Tom Donovan and The
East portraying the civilization. Tom believed in the lawless frontier and is even Compared to Liberty by Ransom saying, "you are as bad as he is
(liberty)." Throughout the film, Tom realizes that Ransom is a great asset to his Town and a wonderful man to Hallie who teaches the whole town
how to live a safer, happier and more civilized life. Tom does not believe in this way of life and prefers the wilderness, but he thinks about his town
and what is the best for them in the long run, showing that Tom deep down strongly supports personal Integrity. Tom lets the town believe that
Ransom was the one who shot liberty because Tom wanted the town to support Ransom even more. He knew after saving Ransoms live and shooting
Liberty; he had lost his lawless freedom (liberty) and the women he loved. When he told Ransom that he was the one who killed Liberty Valance, he
said: "Cold–blooded murder, but I can live with it. Hallie's happy. She wanted you alive. ... Hallie's your girl now. Go back in there and take that
nomination. You taught her how to read and write; now give her something to read and write about!" he called his shooting of Valance "cold
–blooded
murder" even though it was justifiable homicide to prevent the killing of Ransom, who he knew didn't have a chance in a gunfight. I think Tom
called it "murder" not from a legal standpoint but from his perspective as a gunfighter since he "cowardly" killed Liberty from a corner instead of
facing him in a gunfight. However, he realized that this was necessary to boost Ransoms' position among the townspeople because Tom saw him as
the best hope for the future of Shine Bow and Hallie. That's why he said, "I can live with that." He told Ransom the truth because he wanted him not to

What Is The Mood Of The Poem The Pigeons And The Girls
The Pigeons And The Girls by Christopher Middleton was a poem about how everyone is the same, whether it be an animal or a human. The poem
is also told in two point of views; the girl's point of view and then the pigeon's point of view. I could not find many rhetorical terms in the poem
except one. I also feel like Middleton is somehow trying to compare the fragile woman with a pigeon, or he is trying to make a reference to how
sometimes girls can seem small or flightful like birds. Imagery was the only rhetorical term that I found in the poem, and it was in the quotes, "a thigh

when people started setting up the streets with streamers and balloons. He flew around and got into others business. He eventually heard one of the
two women coming out of the dress shop, "Oh i can't wait for the Winter ball tomorrow!" Winter ball? Olleythought. How come no one invited me?
Olley was very upset. He flew home to his nest. The nest was not the biggest. He made it from scratch, all by himself since Olley didn't seem to have
too many owl friends. After today he didn't think he had any friends at all. Olley laid awake in his lonely nest, while thinking his thought away. I have
an idea! Olley thought. I'm going to sabotage the winter ball! The more Olley thought about not being invited to the winter ball, the more he was proud
of the plan to ruin the winter ball.
The winter ball was tonight, and Olley was ready. As night came, crowds and crowds of people were entering the building the winter

Atlanta Zoo Research Paper

  • 1. Atlanta Zoo Research Paper Being a second grader, the Atlanta Zoo was an alternate universe. Traveling with my Girl Scout troup caused lots of chattering and giggling. We found ourselves starting out with the flamingo exhibit. Being the morning, the flamingos were very active and showed off their brightly colored pink feathers to me. Moving on we visited all other kinds of birds like the Ground Hornbill, Lappet faced Vulture, Cassowary, Kookaburra, and many more. I could not believe how many birds there were and all with different markings. After gazing above tree we decided to look down inside the rocks at a Giant Tortoise. The shell helped to camouflage the big tortoise well, but not well enough for we soon caught sight of him. After seeing some of the coolest animals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Modern Birds : The Neornithes Our modern birds, the Neornithes, has been divided into two "super–orders," the Palaeognathae (ratites and tinamous) and the Neognathae (other bird orders). Palaeognathae itself is divided into two orders, the Strathioniformes and Tinamiformes. There are five extant species and two extinct species in the Strathioniformes, or the ratites. In total, there are at least 30 species within the ratites family. 16 of these species are now extinct. The rest of the extant species make up only 0.1% of the total bird species in the world. Ratites are generally a group of large, flightless birds. Even though they have lost the ability to fly, ratites have gained powerful legs that are able to carry them away quickly from predators. Ratites has usually undergone a reduction in wing bones, either in the size and development of the wings, or alterations to the number of actual bones. The exception to this is the African ostrich, who do have prominent wings, which are only used in the act of courtship or to distract predators. The five species are; the Little Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx owenii), the Great Spotted Kiwi (A. haastii), the Brown Kiwi (A.mantelli), the Rowi ... • 3. Snout's On Patrol Analysis Snout's on Patrol Did you know there are pigs that work at airports? I'm one. My name is Snout. I'm an airport pest control pig. I look for birds that are living in the tall grass and bushes near the runways at the airport. Birds can cause problems for planes. If they come too close to one, they can run into it or fly into the engines. I help keep people and birds safe. I have a fabulous sense of smell, and I'm very smart. I can figure out where the birds are from their scent. Here's what happened today. 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. My trainer Joe and I patrolled the grass and bushes along runways 1 through 5. Many birds come to these brushy areas to build their nests, and also because there are seeds, insects, and berries to eat. It was a quiet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Girl Who Gets Gifts From Birds Over the course of many years, people and animals have shared a critical connection. Such as, how animals have been used for medical use, transportation, and comfort. Over the past couple weeks, I have studied how people are animal allies. People and animals share similar behaviors, bonds, and how they help each other. To start out, People and animals relate to each other by sharing similar behaviors. To began with, humans animals enjoy the same comforts we do. According to the selection, "from My Life With the Chimpanzees," Dr. Goodall writes "Chimps like their comfort!" just like humans enjoy their comfort (Goodall 105.25). Goodall observed that chimps sleep at night just as we do. Goodall noticed Chimps making beds using branches. They even made pillows! The chimps used"...small leafy twigs to make a pillow." (Goodall 105.25)... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People and animals can form special bonds. In "The Girl Who Gets Gifts From Birds" Katy Sewall tells about a girl who gets gifts from crows."It was after this routine that the gifts started appearing."(Sewall par. 13) The main character, Gabi, feeds the crows in her backyard on a daily basis along with her mom's help. After doing this for a while the crows began leaving little "trinkets" in the bird feeders such as buttons, lego pieces, shiny object, and other miscellaneous items. • 5. Parrot Monologue On reaching his plane seat a man is surprised to see a parrot strapped in next to him. He asks the stewardess for a coffee where upon the parrot squawks "And get me a whisky you cow!" The stewardess, flustered, brings back a whisky for the parrot and forgets the coffee. When this omission is pointed out to her the parrot drains its glass and bawls "And get me another whisky you idiot". Quite upset, the girl comes back shaking with another whisky but still no coffee. Unaccustomed to such slackness the man tries the parrot's approach "I've asked you twice for a coffee, go and get it now or I'll kick you". At that point, the guy is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer. For the first few seconds there is a terrible din. The bird kicks and claws and thrashes. Then it suddenly gets_very_quiet. At first the guy just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt. After a couple of minutes of silence, he's so worried that he opens up the freezer door. • 6. The Myth Behind the Singing and Chirping of Birds Since the beginning of time, people have always wondered why birds sing and chirp. The answer lies in "The Legend of the Birds." Here is how it goes... Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a tree that reached to the heavens. Inside this tree there lived all the birds in the world of different breeds, color, shapes, and sizes. Now each bird lived peacefully in the tree speaking the language that humans do today. The flock of the birds included laws about obeying the rules, how to act, and the most important rule, which was to never travel to the land of the Pandas, Pandaria. There was a bird by the name of Duck who loathed these rules because he thought it was unfair to not be able to travel to the land of the Pandas. After all, what would a panda do to them? So it all started when Duck broke the law of the birds. Duck had always been curious what is at the land of the Pandas. He decided the rule of the birds was dumb and decided to go and check out the Panda's place. So Duck flew a long way from his home until he finally reached a large area filled with bamboo. The large pointed bamboo made Duck uncertain for a little while, but then he decided he wasn't about to chicken out and flew right in. Right on time, Duck noticed some Panda maidens and sneakily flew over them without being seen. Out of the corner of his eye, Duck noticed a grand room guarded by many Panda warriors. He decided to check it out without making any noise; he flew right over the warriors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Frogs are croaking in different tones while drowsing on water plants. Fish are having fun with each other putting up their dorsal fins on and off. Ducks are leaving the bicycle path because they see me coming. I quit the dyke because there are too many flies above the bicycle path. • 8. Essay on Margaret Laurence's A Bird in the House Margaret Laurence's A Bird in the House Margaret Laurence's A Bird in the House differentiates itself from the four other novels that make up the 'Manawaka series' that has helped establish her as an icon of Canadian literature. It does not present a single story; instead, it is a compilation of eight well–crafted short stories (written between the years 1962 and 1970) that intertwine and combine into a single narrative, working as a whole without losing the essential independence of the parts. It tells – at least on a surface level – of the childhood of a young girl named Vanessa MacLeod , and of her trials and tribulations in the small Manitoban town of Manawaka. The narrative style of the stories is important, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most importantly, it is a story of captivity, of failed attempts at freedom, and of one woman's partial escape from the constraints of her family, home, and past. There is a single symbol that encapsulates the majority of these notions throughout the entirety of the book: the bird, the bird in the house, the bird "caught between the two layers of glass" that so changes Vanessa's life. Birds make too frequent and deliberate an appearance throughout the collection of short stories to be mere haphazard additions to the background; instead, they, along with the images and concepts associated with them, serve to alert the aware reader to what Margaret Laurence, through older–Vanessa, through child–Vanessa, is trying to tell us. The birds, and their associated images, are central and representative of the novel as a whole. There are encounters with several birds throughout the majority of the stories: there is, of course, the sparrow that predicts Ewen MacLeod's death; there is Grandmother Connor's perpetually silent canary, Birdy; there are the hauntingly–voiced loons in the appropriately named story 'The Loons'. They make subtler appearances as well: Grandmother MacLeod's hair is once described as 'white–feathered wings in [a] snare'2; there is the blue Chinese carpet 'with its birds in eternal motionless flight'(p. 47); the ladybird that climbs, falls, and climbs again, despite its ability to fly. Even at such speed, probably with more reason, her eyes were watchful, alert. The low plants with the wide leaves and blue spots were harmless and edible, a brush with the tall red sprigs of the reeds in humid areas caused a fever. In the daylight such things were easy to distinguish even in a hurry, but it also meant that she had to be careful with the predators like the one chasing her. The girl reached the clearing, sighing of relief, but she was far from safe. Leaving the bushes and trees behind meant that the creature wouldn't be able to hide, its camouflage rendered useless, but it would also have freedom to move. • 13. Animal Imagery In Timothy Findley's The Wars Essay Animal Imagery In Timothy Findley's The Wars Works Cited Missing The abundant animal imagery in Timothy Findley's book The Wars is used to develop characterization and theme. The protagonist, Robert Ross, has a deep connection with animals that reflects his personality and the situations that he faces. This link between Robert and the animals shows the reader that human nature is not much different than animal nature. The animals in this story are closely related to the characters, especially the character of Robert. Rodwell acknowledges Robert's close union with animals when he draws Robert in his sketchbook as "the only human form" among sketches of animals (155). He knows that killing an animal is against his moral values, but his role in the army is more important to him. He feels that he has "to show his nerve and ability as an officer" (66). Robert finally shoots the horse behind its ear and kills it. This is the first time he intentionally kills a living creature in the story. Robert's ethics return to him and take priority over military obedience when he tries to rescue horses from the cruelties of war. Robert disobeys Captain Leather's orders and tries to free the horses from the barn that is threatened by falling shells. Unfortunately, the horses die before he can save them all and Robert is filled with anger, shooting Captain Leather between the eyes for causing their death. From this moment on, he rebels against anyone who does not respect his love for animals. This rebellion continues when he barricades himself in a barn with the horses and shouts, "[w]e shall not be taken" (212). The natural world gives writers the ability to communicate expression through the use as symbols and Celtic traditions describe how animals and birds were important parts of society. The use of natural world subjects give a poet such as Oscar Wilde the inspiration for some of his best works in poetry and short story. Oscar Wilde's use of birds and how they are used throughout his writings show great examples of the use of the natural world. The connection to nature in Irish literature can be shown by examining some of Oscar Wilde's most important works such as The Nightingale and the Rose and The Happy Prince as well as poems such as Magdalen Walks. How Does Hitchcock Use Suspense In The Birds The birds compare and contrast essay While reading/watching both du Maurier's " The Birds" and Hitchcock's The Birds, they both used suspense to enhance the story/plot. However, Hitchcock's does a better job at creating and utilizing the element of suspense using pace, timing, and continuity. Alfred Hitchcock uses suspense by slowing the movie down so it makes the audience wait and wait until the climax appears and gives a more dramatic feeling. For example in the scene were the number of birds keep on increasing as Melanie Daniels innocently sits on the bench next to the school. This is suspenseful because as she sits we see the birds rapidly increasing but she is completely clueless. Thus in du Maurier's " The Birds" she does not use the slow suspense in fact she has action in the begging of her story. For example, "children flung themselves, screaming, upon him, while in the darkness the birds rose and dived and came for him again." (Page5). For example: Grimm's version of "Cinderella," published in 1812, was a favorite tale among children in Germany. Disney's reproduction of "Cinderella," published in 1950, was a popular movie among kids in America. Italy's translation of "Cinderella," published in 1885, was favored story among families in Italy. In each version of "Cinderella," – Grimm, Disney, and Italy– one greater theme stands out among all others. In the Grimm story of "Cinderella", there is one vital theme: hate and contempt will get you nowhere in life, when it is simple to be kind. Furthermore, here is some background information before the support to this theme. The king announced a festival for his prince to meet a bride, Cinderella's step–mom says to her that she is not coming, she goes to the tree at her mother's grave and asks the dove there for the same beautiful dress every night, she meets the prince at the ball, loses her slipper, prince uses the slipper to find Cinderella, and she tries it on and gets engaged to the prince. In addition to the background information, the support to the theme is when at Cinderella's wedding, her step–sisters get their eyes pecked out, of because of how mean they are to Cinderella(7). Now, this story was written in Germany in 1812. Correspondingly, the theme was important to kids during that time in Germany because they didn't have any type of entertainment during ... The first stage in which the young girl is happy, and excited by all the world has to offer, the second stage represents when the girl begins to grow up and look for a person to spend her life with. This is expressed in the poem as Dickinson writes "An april but begun." A robin's mating season begins in April showing how the second phase is meant to represent love and childbirth. The last phase is one that represents the peaceful joy of old age. Whether the robin in the nest or the woman in her home, both realize that the joy found in a home is the best. In the poem "Before I Got My Eye Put Out," Dickinson discusses, instead of a specific bird, the motions and movements that all birds make. Through this, Dickinson begins to describe all of the beauty in the world that she was able to see. Her enjoyment of the graceful motions that birds make is evident throughout the poem. In this poem, though only mentioned once, the reader is aware of the importance that the bird species holds in Dickinson's heart. The reader is able to see "the speaker's wonder and awe of the world." The speaker also appears to use "the motions of the dipping birds" to show the infinite. Alfred Hitchcock saw the actor of Melanie Daniels, Tippi Hedren as his muse and wouldn't let any other person play the role. One can tell how obsessed he was with her since she was in almost in every single shot. He saw her and the character Melanie as weak and inferior and victimized both. Hitchcock wanted to make Melanie seem helpless against the bird attacks and as if she was the reason why the birds started attacking. When Melanie first came to Bodega Bay one could clearly tell that she wasn't from there. She was dressed much more beautiful, than everybody else and also very feminine, which made her appear fragile and out of place. Bodega Bay is a very small town and as most small towns they do not like strangers, especially not strangers with a bad reputation like Melanie Davids. Rumors and assumptions spread rapidly in small towns like Bodega Bay. When she first arrived at Bodega Bay, the man inside of the store and at the water front were staring at here and giving her strange looks as if they couldn't believe that such a woman would come to bodega bay and made the audience feel as if she wasn't welcomed there. When Melanie came back from the Brenner residents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Essay One With the Animals: Symbolism of the Animals in... Animals come to represent, both purity and the relationship human beings have with the world. Animals play a key role in Timothy Findley's novel, The Wars, whether it's for the interference, necessity, affection or compassion towards the characters. In The Wars, several characters share this close bond with the animals, that serve to emphasize the different qualities of each character's personality. The animals connect with the main character, Robert Ross, in ways that reflect his uncommon character and the obstacles that he faces throughout the war. Robert enlists into the army as a Canadian soldier, shortly after the tragic death of his younger sister, Rowena. Throughout the novel, Robert grows a connection with the soldiers in the... Rabbits reflect a defenseless and pure Rowena, that Robert feels has been destroyed by the war. As the war goes on, the reader notices the appearance and thought of Rowena and the rabbits slowly disappearing. "Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a rabbit beside the road. Then he heard a rush of wings. Something exploded. The rabbit disappeared." (Findley 179) This was the last time Robert sees a rabbit, signifying the innocence once seen with his sister and her love for the rabbits, becoming forever lost within him. "Everything was in there– including the picture of Rowena. Robert burned it in the middle of the floor. This was not an act of anger– but an act of charity." (Findley 178) Robert Ross also shares a special bond with horses and a coyote. Roberts numerous encounters with these animals, signify the step towards not understanding only the animals, however himself. Robert being a soldier learns the importance of survival and the duty to kill. "Always to trust the horse's judgment above his own when it came to path–finding." (Findley 77) Yet from the coyote and the horses, he learns to trust their guidance, during difficult times. For instance, when Robert is out following the coyote, the coyote guides him to water that is safe to drink by barking three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Summary Of Initiation By Sylvia Plath In the short story, "Initiation," by Sylvia Plath she uses symbolism to create meaning, express feeling and thoughts. One reason why the heather birds symbolize freedom is because they are shown as individuals, that can be free to do whatever they want. Lying in bed on the morning of the Rat Court Millicent thought of the heather birds. "Swooping carefree over the moors, they would go singing and crying out across the great spaces of air, dipping and darting, strong and proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness" This quote shows that Millicent is thinking about how the heather birds have freedom of expression. She wants to have the same abilities the heather birds have. Millicent is rethinking joining the sorority because then she can't be friends with Tracy or getting asked out by a guy because of the way she is. The sorority would confine her to their ideals and beliefs. The heather... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The symbolism of the sparrows really helps to show what the sorority is like. It also brings out the fact that although you would be popular would it really be worth it if you lost your individuality. The symbolism of the sparrow birds also really helps the story to move along. Most importantly, later in the story, while Millicent is making a decision that will impact the rest of her schooling life, she hears the heather birds singing their song of freedom in the back of her mind. • 33. Theme Of The Sea In The Awakening In a Victorian society, women are often conformed to the idea that they are nothing more than property to the men and carer of the children. Throughout The Awakening by Kate Chopin, much of the deeper meaning in the story is revealed through a number of important symbols to symbolize the rebellious behavior of Edna Pontellier, a girl who seeks the satisfaction of her own wants and needs. By doing this Edna is going against the traditional role of women in a Victorian society. In the start of the novel, Edna engages in her self discovery by becoming more independent and straying away from conventions. Throughout the novel, Edna participates in rebellious actions such as moving out of her house and affairs with other men. Towards the end of the novel, Edna feels as though the only way to truly achieve freedom is by suicide. Edna's rebellious life is represented through symbolism which... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Awakening,Kate Chopin uses the symbol, the sea, as a way to convey Edna's newly found strength and empowerment. The sea both demonstrate the transformation of her body and transformation of her mind. Edna's swiming experience transforms her body during her awakening by overcoming her fears. Learning to swim is an important experience because it shows how she is now able to gain control over her body. The statement, "The voice of the sea speaks to the soul" (Chopin 18), is powerful due to the fact that it represents how Edna undergoes a dramatic change in character. In order to express her innermost desires, she has to go from listening and acting upon the influences of society, to following her own mind. The sea is also seen as a "seductive" voice that "invit[es] the soul to wander"(Chopin 25). The sea and its limitless potential invites Edna deep into thought about life. The penguin, is a flightless bird that has aquatic capabilities and is unbothered by the frigid temperature of its habitat. One out of the ordinary thing he does is host parties, but never enjoys them. It may seem to the reader as though he hosts them just so he can fit in with the crowed, but in his point of view he hosts them for a completely different reason. In reality he hosts these extravagant parties in hopes that maybe one day Daisy, his one true love, would come. Just like how he had bought the house right across from her so he could stay away but not too far. He wants so badly to be apart of the upper class, but the only reason he wants it is because he thinks it will come with Daisies love. For instance, when Robert's team takes a wrong turn, "the fog is full of noises" of birds (80). Then the birds fly out of the ditch and disappear. Robert and Poole know that "[t]here must be something terribly wrong...but neither one knew how to put it into words. The birds, being gone, had taken some mysterious presence with them. There was an awful sense of void––as if the world had been emptied" (81). The birds return and when Robert nears the collapsing dike, "one of the birds [flies] up and cut[s] across Robert's path" as if it is trying to prevent him from going any further. Robert does not heed the warning and almost dies in the sinking mud. Another ominous bird appears when Robert and his crew are close to enemy lines. A bird sings and Robert looks up to see the deadly gas easing towards them. He is able to react quickly and save most of his crew. Soon after, the same bird sings again, "one long note descending; three that [waver]" (142). Then Robert sees the German soldier whom he ends up killing when he thinks that the man is reaching for a gun. Bullies themselves sometimes deliberately hurt other children physically. "Rowing the bus"– Paul Logan, is one of examples about bullying when it gets worse. The author wrote about his life when he was in elementary school. He was a "perfect target" for the others kids to tease. He was made to row the bus. "...on the way to school I had to sit in the dirty bus aisle littered with paper, gum wads, and spitballs" that was what he was forced to do by a group of bullies in his school. He was a small boy and had no father so that his mother had to work very hard to support him. He used to wear the clothes that his mother got from the donation at a local church. He feared that he might wear the clothes that used to belong with his classmates. A problem he faced at school was that he had a hard time to learn to say the "s" sound properly and "pronounced words that began with "th" as if they began with a "d.". He would become a target that everyone would laugh at him. The direct contrast of the migrant workers' harsh working conditions and splendid appearances of mansions motivated Xu Bing to record this striking impression of his homeland. Unexpectedly, sponsor of this project agreed to his idea of making a work of art out of useless materials in the atrium of the building, which looks like a big cage (Xiong Artron), representing "China's new wealth, prosperity, and capitalistic spirit (Traub)." • 38. Analysis Of 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' 1. The Man who shot liberty valance Tom Doniphon, the outlaw hero, shot Liberty Valance To protect Hallie and Ransom Stoddard because he knew that Ransom is the right future for his town and Hallie, even though Ransom views contradict with Toms views and wishes. Throughout the movie there is a clear message; wilderness V. civilization. Shine bow, Tom, Liberty, etc., portraying the wilderness and Tom Donovan and The East portraying the civilization. Tom believed in the lawless frontier and is even Compared to Liberty by Ransom saying, "you are as bad as he is (liberty)." Throughout the film, Tom realizes that Ransom is a great asset to his Town and a wonderful man to Hallie who teaches the whole town how to live a safer, happier and more civilized life. Tom does not believe in this way of life and prefers the wilderness, but he thinks about his town and what is the best for them in the long run, showing that Tom deep down strongly supports personal Integrity. Tom lets the town believe that Ransom was the one who shot liberty because Tom wanted the town to support Ransom even more. He knew after saving Ransoms live and shooting Liberty; he had lost his lawless freedom (liberty) and the women he loved. When he told Ransom that he was the one who killed Liberty Valance, he said: "Cold–blooded murder, but I can live with it. Hallie's happy. She wanted you alive. ... Hallie's your girl now. Go back in there and take that nomination. You taught her how to read and write; now give her something to read and write about!" he called his shooting of Valance "cold –blooded murder" even though it was justifiable homicide to prevent the killing of Ransom, who he knew didn't have a chance in a gunfight. I think Tom called it "murder" not from a legal standpoint but from his perspective as a gunfighter since he "cowardly" killed Liberty from a corner instead of facing him in a gunfight. However, he realized that this was necessary to boost Ransoms' position among the townspeople because Tom saw him as the best hope for the future of Shine Bow and Hallie. That's why he said, "I can live with that." He told Ransom the truth because he wanted him not to feel guilty about killing someone and that at least one person would ... • 39. What Is The Mood Of The Poem The Pigeons And The Girls The Pigeons And The Girls by Christopher Middleton was a poem about how everyone is the same, whether it be an animal or a human. The poem is also told in two point of views; the girl's point of view and then the pigeon's point of view. I could not find many rhetorical terms in the poem except one. I also feel like Middleton is somehow trying to compare the fragile woman with a pigeon, or he is trying to make a reference to how sometimes girls can seem small or flightful like birds. Imagery was the only rhetorical term that I found in the poem, and it was in the quotes, "a thigh or hip bone was not working right," and "she still held the other by the hand...she was thin, she limped."
