OVERVIEW OF RECORDS

Abstract: The United Methodist Publishing House is the offical publisher of the United
Methodist Church. The collection is made up of administrative material of publications from the
Publishing House, Religion in Life and the Christian Advocate. It includes correspondences,
financial records, conference processing, photographs, postcards, and newspaper clippings of the
employees and members of the Editorial Board and Advisory Council of Religion in Life and
correspondences, newspaper clippings, conference processing and photographs of the Christian
Advocate.

HISTORY NOTE
The United Methodist Publishing House is the offical publisher of the United Methodist Church.
It is the oldest and largest agency of the United Methodist Church. The United Methodist
Publishing House has existed since 1789 under a variety of names. After 1968, with the merger
of all the branches of Methodism, the Publishing House was offically renamed the United
Methodist Publishing House.i The book publishing branch of the United Methodist Publishing
House, Abingdon Press was created in the 1920s.ii
Abingdon Press, Nashville, Tennessee, published Religion in Life from 1932 to 1980.iii The
quarterly review published both articles and book review of subject matter covering topics in
religion, theology, philosophy and literature. Religion in Life’s main focus was articles and books
having to do with Christianity and Christian Theology.iv This publication serviced as a journal
for the lay reader.
In 1980 Abingdon Press ceased publication of the Religion in Life after forty-nine years. The
Editor-in-Chief for most of Religion in Life was Emory Buck. The reasons for this were the
rising cost and decreasing circulation of the publication.v After 1980, the publication was
replaced with the Quarterly Review: a Scholarly Journal for Reflection in Ministry (1980-2005),
published jointly by the United Methodist General Board of High Education and the United
Methodist Publishing House.vi The Quarterly Review focused on topics and issues relevant to the
Methodist clergy. vii
The Christian Advocate (NY) was published by the Methodist Book Concern (United Methodist
Publishing House) from 1826-1956.viii Its Editor-in-Chief was Rev. James M Buckley.

SCOPE NOTE
The collection is made up of administrative material from Religion in Life and the Christian
Advocate. It includes correspondences, financial records, photographs, postcards, and newspaper
clippings of the employees and members of the Editorial Board and Advisory Council.ix
The record group contains eight series. The material includes correspondence between the
editors of Religion in Life (Emory S. Bucke), administrative assistants (Erminie Lantero & Jean
Hayen), book reviewer (Kendrick Grobel), and the members of the Editorial Board and Advisory
Council regarding board meetings, new members, reviews of articles and books, financial
records, photographs of authors, postcards from authors. In the record of the Christian Advocate
were correspondences between editors of the Christian Advocate (Dr. James R. Joy, Rev. James
M. Buckley, & Dr. George Eckman) and other individuals and newspaper clippings regarding the
topic of their letters.x

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS
Denominational agency journals, reports and committee minutes are open to the public unless
they have been closed in accordance with requirements specified in the Discipline.
Denominational agency staff office records are closed for twenty-five (25) years after creation.
Personnel records are closed for at least 75 years. Appeals can be made to the General
Commission on Archives and History, P. O. Box 127, Madison, NJ 07940.
