This is Lucy who is 17 years old and has a part time job in Retail. She falls
into class D of ABC and lives in Essex with her parents. She is an Aspirer
and is very materialistic and orientated to image. She enjoys watching ‘The
only way is Essex’ and many romantic comedies such as ‘When Harry met
Sally’, ‘He’s just not that into you’ and ‘Love Actually’. My film would appeal
to her, and the rest of the target audience, firstly because of it’s narrative
which conforms (in some ways) to the convention of many other romantic
comedies (a socially awkward character wanting to find love or finding love)
but has it’s own twist. Also because of it’s style; it is quite similar to ‘13
going on 30’ which was really successful and appealed to the same target
audience as my film.
According to Bulmer & Katz ‘Uses & Gratification Theory’ the audience would watch my
film for 3 out of 5 reasons:

 Personal Identity –

By watching the film the audience will be able to find models of behaviour, for example, if they are also
socially awkward like Bridget but see how her behaviour changes in order for her to get a boyfriend
they may begin modelling her behaviour to also get a boyfriend. This also links with them identifying
with a valued character (Bridget) and gaining insight into their own personalities; they may realise they
don’t have to be socially awkward and their self-esteem will increase.

 Integration & Social Interaction –

The audience may develop social empathy which means to gain insight into the circumstances of
others; this would make them better people. Through talking about the film with others the audience
could also gain a sense of belonging as it makes it easier to find a basis of conversation with someone
they wouldn’t usually have the confidence to communicate with. The film also gives lonely people a
substitute for real life companionship and enables them to connect more with family, friends or the
society that has also watched the film.

 Entertainment –

The film allows the audience to escape from their own problems by watching the problems of the
characters in the film, which would make them feel better about themselves. Watching the film would
also give the audience filling time, entertainment, a chance to relax and perhaps a chance to release
their own emotions.
According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs my film would allow people to
feel love and belongingness, through Integration & Social Interaction, self
esteem, through Personal Identity and help them to achieve self
actualization as it could give them an insight into their own personalities.
This links with their increase of authenticity and self-sufficiency as people
could relate to the characters and the problems they face.
