E-commerce: Challenges and Opportunities
for Women Entrepreneurs
Neeti Gupta
Introduction
• Women play significant roles in our society.
But traditional business in India is male
dominating.
• E-commerce which suits almost all type of
businesses is becoming the biggest platform
for women to fulfill their dreams. Information
technology is giving women freedom to work
from the comfort of their home.
Women Entrepreneur
Woman who organizes and manages any
enterprise is called woman entrepreneur.
According to government of India, “An
enterprise owned and controlled by women
having a minimum financial interest of 51% of
the capital and giving at least 51% of the
employment generated in the enterprise to
women.”
E-commerce
• E-commerce is doing business across
telecommunication networks. Buyers, seller or
other parties involved interact electronically to
conduct business and do not have any physical
contact.

Challenges
Traditional Challenges:
• Family Resistance: The biggest constraint in putting ideas into practice.
• Undesirable Constant Pressure: Women entrepreneurs are constantly under the
pressure.
– Double burden of taking care of family and business
– Lots of criticism for failure makes her less confident.
• Mental Block: As society is not open and supportive toward women
entrepreneurship, women themselves deferred to start business.
• More of push than pull factor: Maximum women are into business for two
reasons.
– Economic reason: Supporting their family, earning extra money for family.
– Compelling reason :Family hardship like injury or death of husband.
• Lack of female mentors and role models: Mentors are important for both
personal and business growth. In 2016, out of 1021 funded start-up, only 25 had
female-only founders.
• Lack of resources: To start and run business women need financial assistance
regularly. Lack of rising funds at right time is the biggest hurdles in starting or
expanding an existing business.
Virtual Startup: Challenges
• Lack of awareness about virtual startups life: Each business has its own system; likewise online
businesses have their own processes.
– Coming up with an idea is very tough
– Obtaining a domain name and create a website. For which one must be technologically sound.
– Figuring out right delivery : Speed with security
– Packaging decision: Trade-off between increasing customer satisfaction and saving cost.
– Online retailing means to manage many things in one go. Entrepreneur who finds it harder to manage
will fail sooner or later.
• Difficult to survive in highly competitive environment: Online entrepreneurship has almost no entry
barrier, making competition tougher. There is huge competition in almost all the product categories. High
competition and low profitability force business women to quit.
• Lack of technology expertise: Starting online business needs to possess special set of skills like setting up
website, market your business online etc. or need to employ specialized persons or taking services of an
internet marketing company.
• Difficult in Building credibility and developing relationship: Gaining trust of customers is one of the
biggest challenges in starting online business. Issues like privacy and security, quality of product and
services and buying based on online images and descriptions.
• Promotion: Real challenge lies in attracting customers. Crafting a cost-effective and finding the right
combination of different offline-online promotional tools like advertising, press releases, articles, blogs,
email blitzes, google ads, youtube, content marketing, social media etc.
Virtual Selling: Challenges
• Choosing right selling partner
They need to understand whole system from getting orders, closing the sale
and finally receiving the payment.
• Pricing Problems
Pricing is very sensitive and complicated in transparent competitive online
environment. To remain competitive price needs to adjust accordingly.
• Managing inventory: Balancing demand and supply of goods is very
important.
– Aware of the latest trend.
– Maintain proper inventory level to avoid delay after receiving order.
• High Returns
The most frustrating thing in online selling is returns. Double expenses and
blocking of working capital eat retailer’s profit
• Peer competition
Rising above the crowd is not an easy thing. Brand creation in any
marketplace is not an easy task.
Opportunities
• Flexibility: The digital age has brought flexibility in deciding time and
place of work. Flexible work schedule helps women entrepreneurs to
manage their home and business more efficiently.
• Minimum Set up Cost: As compare to brick and mortar business
investment is very less. The start-up cost for virtual business includes cost
of hiring CA, CS, professional to create a website, taking domain name,
building a team, payment gateways and shipping partners. Total starting
costs ranges from 1 Lakh to 5 Lakhs. [16]
• Huge customer base: Internet has no borders or geographies. Access to
million of new customer is automatic when women choose to become e-
commerce entrepreneur.
Improvement in Support System
Government
• Day by day support system for budding women entrepreneurs is improving in India. There are
endless schemes, facilities, concessions and incentives exclusively to promote women
entrepreneurship like:
– Startup India Hub launched on 2017 working in a new initiative to
enable startups to apply for government scheme and venture funds
directly from the platform.
– Start up India scheme facilitates bank loan of Rs. 10 lakh to 1 crore to
at least one women
– Support to training and Employment programme for women (India) for
skill up-gradation,
– SBI-Bharatiya Mahila bank started to cater specialized need of women
entrepreneurs,
– Loan Schemes launched by various banks like Annapurna scheme,
Stree Shakti Package for women Etrepreneurs(State bank ), Udyogini
Scheme(Punjab and Sind Bank), Mahila Udyam Nidhi Scheme(PNB)
Initiatives by E-tailers/Institutions
Ebay (Mach 2010): She Means Business
Paytm (March 2016): Invited selected women sellers to interact with their senior
management to formulate policies to help women entrepreneurs
Centre government (March 2016): Mahila E-Haat
FICCI Ladies Organization and shopclue (September, 2016): Women Entrepreneurship
(WE) in e-commerce’ initiative.
Free Charge with International Finance Corporation (IFC) December 2016: Help
women entrepreneurs sell their products on Snapdeal.
The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) July 2017:
Launched a unique initiative “Power of She”
The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), July 2017:
Power of She” aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship among women under ‘Digital
India’.
Amazon in collaboration with organizations likes self –employed Women association
(SEVA) and Impulse Social Enterprise started, November 2017: ‘Saheli store
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore, January 2018: Online and
classroom Women Start-up Programme (WSP).
Conclusion
• Since the concept of family, women have an inborn trait
towards an entrepreneurship as they have been
managing everything within four walls. Role of women
has gained considerable importance in virtual
environment. Armed with self-conviction, women want
to become more than just being a good homemaker.
• Women entrepreneurs must be trained and molded to
sustain and strive for excellence in the entrepreneurial
arena. Support system for women entrepreneurs is
gradually improving in India. Still, we need more role
models in business to overcome traditional and
technologic based challenges.

  • 9. Traditional Challenges: • Family Resistance: The biggest constraint in putting ideas into practice. • Undesirable Constant Pressure: Women entrepreneurs are constantly under the pressure. – Double burden of taking care of family and business – Lots of criticism for failure makes her less confident. • Mental Block: As society is not open and supportive toward women entrepreneurship, women themselves deferred to start business. • More of push than pull factor: Maximum women are into business for two reasons. – Economic reason: Supporting their family, earning extra money for family. – Compelling reason :Family hardship like injury or death of husband. • Lack of female mentors and role models: Mentors are important for both personal and business growth. In 2016, out of 1021 funded start-up, only 25 had female-only founders. • Lack of resources: To start and run business women need financial assistance regularly. Lack of rising funds at right time is the biggest hurdles in starting or expanding an existing business.
  • 10. Virtual Startup: Challenges • Lack of awareness about virtual startups life: Each business has its own system; likewise online businesses have their own processes. – Coming up with an idea is very tough – Obtaining a domain name and create a website. For which one must be technologically sound. – Figuring out right delivery : Speed with security – Packaging decision: Trade-off between increasing customer satisfaction and saving cost. – Online retailing means to manage many things in one go. Entrepreneur who finds it harder to manage will fail sooner or later. • Difficult to survive in highly competitive environment: Online entrepreneurship has almost no entry barrier, making competition tougher. There is huge competition in almost all the product categories. High competition and low profitability force business women to quit. • Lack of technology expertise: Starting online business needs to possess special set of skills like setting up website, market your business online etc. or need to employ specialized persons or taking services of an internet marketing company. • Difficult in Building credibility and developing relationship: Gaining trust of customers is one of the biggest challenges in starting online business. Issues like privacy and security, quality of product and services and buying based on online images and descriptions. • Promotion: Real challenge lies in attracting customers. Crafting a cost-effective and finding the right combination of different offline-online promotional tools like advertising, press releases, articles, blogs, email blitzes, google ads, youtube, content marketing, social media etc.
  • 11. Virtual Selling: Challenges • Choosing right selling partner They need to understand whole system from getting orders, closing the sale and finally receiving the payment. • Pricing Problems Pricing is very sensitive and complicated in transparent competitive online environment. To remain competitive price needs to adjust accordingly. • Managing inventory: Balancing demand and supply of goods is very important. – Aware of the latest trend. – Maintain proper inventory level to avoid delay after receiving order. • High Returns The most frustrating thing in online selling is returns. Double expenses and blocking of working capital eat retailer’s profit • Peer competition Rising above the crowd is not an easy thing. Brand creation in any marketplace is not an easy task.
  • 12. Opportunities • Flexibility: The digital age has brought flexibility in deciding time and place of work. Flexible work schedule helps women entrepreneurs to manage their home and business more efficiently. • Minimum Set up Cost: As compare to brick and mortar business investment is very less. The start-up cost for virtual business includes cost of hiring CA, CS, professional to create a website, taking domain name, building a team, payment gateways and shipping partners. • 15. Conclusion • Since the concept of family, women have an inborn trait towards an entrepreneurship as they have been managing everything within four walls.
