This tutorial explored design thinking, entrepreneurship and the sharing economy. A prototyping exercise occurred inspired by design thinking methods and the Beautiful Data summer institute at Harvard University from June 16-27, 2014. Tracy Green and Karoliina Luoto collaborated on the tutorial, providing inspiration and helpful group facilitation. It was given at the J. Boye 2014 conference in Aarhus, Denmark on November 4, 2014.

9. Beautiful Data - About
Beautiful Data was a summer institute held at metaLAB (at) Harvard
with support from the Getty Foundation from June 16-27, 2014.
It brought together an elite group of museum professionals to
address the complexities of working with open collections through a
range of discussions, activities, and projects.
The prototyping exercise is based on a game from Beautiful Data.

Designing Object Based Experiences:
A Prototyping Game (PDF)
12. Prototyping Exercise - Provocation
How is your smartphone you?
How would you communicate to someone who does not know about
what the device is or how it works?
In this exercise we will consider the smartphone as a microcosm of
the museum - as collection of data and digital assets that document
one’s personal and professional lives. We’ll use museum based
methods of interpretation to explore these meanings and
relationships.
13. Prototyping Exercise - Components
1. Who is the audience?
2. What are the values?
3. What are the formats?
4. What are the critical metadata fields?
15. J.Boye 14 - Post-Tutorial Goals
1. Implement prototyping techniques in your
personal and professional practice.
2. Support and nurture the creativity of others.
3. Explore design thinking, entrepreneurship and
the sharing economy.
