The Ottawa Ankle Rule (OAR) is used to determine if a patient with ankle pain may have an ankle fracture without needing an x-ray. The rule examines bone tenderness in the malleoli and inability to bear weight both immediately and in the emergency department. If no tenderness is found in the malleoli and the patient can bear weight both immediately and in the emergency department, an ankle fracture is unlikely and x-rays are not necessary.
