Topic 2: Readers will often think about characters long after a text has been finished.
Analyse how the writer made a character or characters memorable for you in a text you have
studied. In The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold the main character Susie Salmon is made memorable
to us through the use of narrative point of view, symbolism, setting and her actions. The novel is
based around the rape and murder of her and she narrates the process of grief and acceptance in a
heart–warming, poignant yet beautiful way as she observes the effects of her death on earth from
heaven. Sebold creates a full rounded impression of her – we see her triumphs and...show more

Sebold purposely uses symbols of gardens and new life "like Buckley's garden blooming one
year in all its crazed jumbleness" to represent new life and Susie journeying into the new
'springtime' of her time in heaven. We see Susie move on to "the place I call this wide, wide
heaven because it contains all of my simplest desires but also my most humble and grand."
Sebold uses this to show us how after years of turmoil Susie has finally reached the point of
acceptance. We as readers are inspired by her incredible resilience through a time that most of us
would be broken in. Sebold created Susie as a character to show us the beauty of resilience and so
as to educate the reader about how much we can learn from anyone, including a fourteen year old
girl. We remember Susie as a figurehead for the type of person who can draw strength and beauty
out of horror, moving on whilst never forgetting. These are hard lessons.
In The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold creates a rounded character of Susie Salmon who through
symbolism, setting and narrative point of view remains an unforgettable person standing for
resilience of human spirit and inspiration through grieving processes. Through Susie's emotional
journey we share with her the trauma of loss and recognise the beauty of inner strength that can be
drawn from it. Sebold creates Susie who inspires us about humanity and will stand as a constant
reminder of strength long after we finish the

The Lovely Bones Essay
Our narrator Susie Salmon is already in heaven. Murdered by a neighbor when she was only
fourteen years old, Susie tells us what it is like to be in her new place. "When I first entered heaven
I thought everyone saw what I saw. That in everyone's heaven there were soccer goalposts in the
distance and lumbering women throwing shot put and javelin. That all the buildings were like
suburban northeast high schools built in the 1960s." Later she learns that heaven is whatever you
truly want it to be and, sometimes, other people's version of heaven intercepts with your own. Susie
meets another girl, Holly, on her third day in heaven and they end up sharing their ideal home ––– a
duplex. Franny, their intake counselor, helps them adjust. As...show more content...
It is evident that something has changed in the Salmon household. Susie worries most about her
gifted and petulant sister Lindsay. Lindsay is only one year younger but still is not told directly
about what's happened to Susie; instead she hears telephone snippets and bits of conversations
between her parents and the police. After hearing her father describe Susie's features, she asks her
father not to lie to her, so he doesn't; but even answering her question, he can't face the truth of his
words. Susie watches Lindsay sitting alone in her bedroom trying to harden herself. As the story
unfolds, it is clear that Lindsay carries the hardest burden, because no one will ever be able to
look at her and not think about Susie. By losing her sister, Lindsay is in danger of being robbed
of herself. It is insight like this that made me just love reading this novel. Perhaps it is because
Susie is narrating from heaven that she has a true and believable omniscient point of view.
Because she cares, all of the characters are explored equally and their motivations, reactions and
actions are clearly and evenly relayed. Not that she isn't capable of curling her lip in heaven, nor is
she so accepting that she doesn't try to make

Essay on Lovely Bones
Though intriguing, heaven can sometimes be a fear. People try to imagine what it might be like to
leave this Earth, and soon they slowly come spiraling back down from their mountain of clouds,
and realize that is incomprehensible to imagine such an event. Due to this inability to fully grasp
the meaning of the after life, people have begun to have different perspectives on what heaven
means to them. Some fear death, while others invite it into their lives either out of curiosity or hope.
As for Susie Salmon, she neither feared death nor encouraged it. Her murder was an unexpected one,
but George Harvey was the only one expecting this moment for weeks. The Lovely Bones (novel by
Alice Sebold and movie directed by Peter Jackson)...show more content...
But for those capable of surpassing this difficulty, it can be quite amusing and intriguing to
visualize one's own heaven. To some, it might mean open fields of green. To others, it could
similarly be the same house they have been living in for years. The beauty of imagination is that
no one will ever tell you that you are wrong in your mental imagery. As a powerful tool,
imagination continues to impress those willing to allow creativity to flood the mind, escaping
reality completely. When reading the novel, readers can incorporate Sebold's descriptions of heaven,
and adjust them accordingly so that they fit into a vision that seems right to the reader. This ability
to create an entire world inside one's head is remarkable, and it is even more astonishing to make
connections between a fictional character's world, and one's own. Novels give a reader an
opportunity to mentally visualize events and situations that an individual would normally never find
the time to think about.
"Two days later, Franny's map led me to a field that I had always walked by but which, though
beautiful, I'd left unexplored. The drawing had a dotted line to indicate a path. Searching

Harvey that he might know what happened to his daughter. He tells the detective but the detective
tells him that if he has no proof he cannot do anything.
In the field of criminology there are a lot of theories that explain why people commit crimes and
their motive. In Lovely Bones, the reason why Mr. Harvey commits his crime is because he
became obsessive over Susie. In the movie it says that he was trying to stop the urges to kill Susie
by killing cats and dogs. The theory that best connects to the plot of the movie is The Rational
Choice Theory. The Rational Choice Theory is the opportunity to commit a crime, it pays close
attention to the casual role of the situation that is about to happen, and it removes family,
background and everything else. Some cases the crime is created with the opportunity while you did
nothing to affect it. I think the Rational Choice Theory is one to have a connection
