2. AuthenticTask
Task 1 Solar Boat
Design and construct a
solar powered boat
which can compete in a
series of races.
Task 2 Movie Presentation
Document the building your boat,
including why you chose that
design, the materials used and
modifications you made to
improve your design.
Explain how solar panels work.
Explain what is meant by
“sustainable energy” .
3. Science
Year 6
Physical sciences
Electrical energy can
be transferred and
transformed in
electrical circuits and
can be generated
from a range of
sources.

Engaging students in rich and authentic learning experiences
Background
School was investigating the relationships between educational programs and student engagement, specifically with students identified as gifted.
Outcome:
Introducing TAGS programs within the school. Solar challenge was one of these. (Acknowledge Patrick Bourke GHPS)
Resulting in the behaviour of some gifted students significantly improving.
Task 1 – Specific set of rules governing size, materials, solar panel and motor etc (National competition rules)
Students decide the:
design
panel and motor placement
type of propeller
shaft length and angle
how will I support my solar panel?
fixing the stabilising hooks on the front and rear of boat etc
iPad to enable research and record process
School comes out to watch the races.
Task 2
Determine how they want to present their movie
iPads - imovie, Green screen, garage band for sound track
Authentic audience - parents invited to a special screening of movies on race day.
Cross Curriculum Priority: Sustainability
Year 4 Forces
Materials, Tools (teach children safe use), Equipment, Safety requirements
eye protection & dust mask
Movies ICT capabilities – imovie, Green Screen, digital images/videos, Garage Band
Construction
Racing – fix ups during racing – on the spot.
Movie – Movie producers, plan their movie, sound, props, editing.
New race pool – students involved in the development:
design (How can we hold back the water? Additional supports?)
materials (strength),
size (length, width & depth),
construction,
reusable
We purchase a 20m roll of black plastic each year.
Scaled drawings
Measuring parts
Propeller shaft angle
Weight of additional components
Timing trials
Symmetry – not symmetrical it may not travel straight
Congruency – hulls on catamarang
