Dr. Rebecca Rumbul gave this presentation at AlaveteliCon in Madrid on 20 May 2015.
If you would like to collaborate with her on research into the impacts of civic technology, then please contact her on rebecca@mysociety.org.
3. Why do research in this field?
Investigate the value of civic tech and real world
effects
Taking a measured & rational approach enables
us to compare and validate our activities
Rebecca Rumbul – AlavevteliCon 2015
Examine whether its worth doing civic tech at all!
7. Current experiment
• Government responsiveness rates
• Civic tech (Alaveteli+others) vs. personal
requests
• Do authorities respond faster to requests
coming from civic tech tools / individual
email accts?
9. Research is good for you!
• We can make our sites better
• We can provide a greater service to
citizens
• We can understand important differences
between countries / regions to target our
resources effectively
I should start by introducing myself, I am Rebecca, and I am head of research at mysociety.
I’ve come to mysociety from a political science background. I don't know how to code, and I dont know my django from my javascript.
What i do know is that citizen engagement, direct democracy, transparency and accountability are more pressing concerns than ever, and my research experience is in trying to make sense of what is happening, why its happening, and what can be done to change things. Hopefully, for the better.
So, why are we at mysociety even bothering with research? what's the point?
Well, one of the key questions we need to ask is whether what we are doing is even worth doing at all. Many of us in this room are quite evangelical about our medium, but simply believing something is good is not the same as it actually being good.
We need to be able to show that what we are doing has value, that it is actually making some sort of difference in the real world.
In order to do that, we need to take a measured, and rather dispassionate approach. We have to put our biases to one side, collect evidence to measure our approach, and look at what the evidence is telling us.
Funders like hard evidence!
.
Over the next 18 months, we are doing lot and lots of experiments and studies looking at various aspects of civic tech
NOT JUST MYOSCIETY SITES!
I need help
I cant do research without sites
I need help from people like you!
Raises tough questions, so why should you help
And, we do have funds to compensate your for your participation.
Also, if you have any ideas on how we might work together on measuring impact, please get in touch!
