2. Introduction of cyst
Cyst derived from Greek word “KYSTIS”
which means bladder / sac like lesion
John Hunter described a dental cyst in 1774.

3. INTRODUCTION
• A cyst is defined as a pathological cavity mostly but
not always lined by epithelium and containing fluid,
semi-fluid or gasseous contents and which is not
created by accumulation of pus (Kramer,1974)

Cysts of the jaws
Increased incidence of cysts of the jaws maxilla and mandible in
comparison with other bones of the body is due to
Development of dentition within jaws – odontogenic
epithelial remnants.
Infection or inflammation can reach the jaw easily thru any
pathology involving the tooth
Nature of development of jaws – union of several processes
– entrapment of epithelium
Presence of sinus (maxilla)
6. a) TRUE CYSTS: that which is lined by epithelium e.g dentigerous
cyst, radicular cyst etc.
a) PSEUDO CYSTS: not lined by epithelium, e.g. Solitary bone cyst,
Aneurismal bone cyst etc
• Cysts are formed either in bone or in soft tissue.
• When found in bone, they are called central cysts & when found in
soft tissue, they are called peripheral cysts

ROBINSON’S CLASSIFICATION(1945)
From odontogenic tissue – Periodontal cyst
Radicular or dental root apex type
Lateral type
Residual type
– Dentigerous cyst
– Primordial cyst
From non-dental tissue – Median cyst (median palatal cyst)
– Incisive canal cyst
– Globulomaxillary cyst

• Dentigerous cyst
• Eruption cyst
• Odontogenic keratocyst
• Gingival cyst of new born
• Gingival cyst of the adult
• Lateral periodontal cyst
• Calcifying odontogenic cyst
• Glandular odontogenic cyst
