Cognitive Objectives
- Students will formulate their own concepts of happiness
- Students will conceptualize how their lives affect their happiness
- Students will recognize the differences between conventional forms of happiness and
happiness as it relates to Aristotle’s interpretation
Materials

Teaching/Learning Sequence
- Anticipatory Set – Watch a short video
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBSeJOWI7Zg) in which Deepak Chopra
discusses some of his views on happiness followed by a short discussion of his views
(15 minutes)
- Lesson Development
o Begin with a recap of Aristotle’s function argument and how it relates to
happiness (10 minutes)
o Lead a short discussion on how Aristotle’s function argument might look in
today’s world if someone were to “live according to virtue” (10 minutes)
o Students will then be asked to record themselves explaining what they think
happiness is and how one achieves happiness (55 minutes)
§ I will first lead a brief introduction to iMovie (or the appropriate video
editing software and the most common features they will be using (15
minutes)
§ Students will have a short brainstorming session to help them decide
what they want to include in their conceptualization of happiness (5
minutes)
§ Students will then be asked to record themselves and make a 30
second clip of their views. They will be provided with enough time to
edit their clips as needed (25 minutes)
§ Students will drop their clips into my dropbox and I will combine them
in iMovie in order to make a class video that will be exported to
YouTube (10 minutes)
- Closure – Class will end with a viewing of the final product
Homework
- Students will be asked to read/prepare for the next lesson
Assessment
2. - Formative – students will be asked to participate during the discussions as well as
showing their views in their video clips
- Summative – the final class video will be used as the summative assessment for the
lesson
