3. โข Many pet owners are unaware of the diseases
and parasites their pets may have that can
cause illness to humans.
โข This is one reason that proper veterinary care
through routine visits to a veterinarian is so
important.
โข The description of these diseases and parasitic
in this slide demonstrate why it is so
important for cat owners to take of their pets,
which, in turn will help keep all family
members healthy.
4. 1) Campylobacteriosis
โข Caused by: bacteria
โข spread through: contaminated food, water, or
contact with stool (poop) of infected animals
โข Symptom in cat: no sign at all
โข - Symptom in people: diarrhea, cramping,
abdominal pain, and fever within 2-5 days
after exposure to the organism
โข * Serious life-threatening infections in infants,
older persons, and those with weakened
immune systems
6. 2) Cat-scratch Disease (Bartonella
henselae)
โข caused by: bacteria
โข Spread through: being bitten or scratched by a
cat
โข Symptom in cat: no sign at all
โข Symptom in people: mild infection 3-14 days
later at the site of the wound. Fever, headache,
poor appetite, and exhaustion if the infections
worsen. Later, the personโs lymph nodes closest
to the infection can become swollen, tender, or
painful.
10. Cryptosporidiosis
โข Caused by: parasite
โข Spread through: contaminated food or water
โข Symptom in cat: no sign of illness
โข Symptom in people: profuse, watery diarrhea
with cramping, abdominal pain, and nausea
12. 5) Echinococcosis
โข Caused by: tapeworm eggs
โข Spread through: contaminated food and water
โข Symptom in cat: no sign
โข Symptom in people: no sign at first. Symptoms
start when the slow-growing cysts become
large enough to press on the organs they have
invaded especially the liver and lungs.
14. 6) Giardia
โข Caused by: parasite
โข Spread through: food or water contaminated
with stool.
โข Symptom in cat: diarrhea, greasy stools, and
dehydration.
โข Symptom in people: diarrhea, greasy stools,
and dehydration plus abdominal cramps,
nausea, and vomiting.
16. 7) Hookworms
โข Caused by: worms
โข Spread through: cat:contact with
contaminated soil or sand. Also accidentally
ingesting the parasite from the environment
or through their motherโs milk or colostrum.
โข : people: alking barefoot, kneeling, or sitting
on ground contaminated with stool (poop) of
infected animals.
17. โข Symptom in cat: kitten: anemia and weight
loss *severe infection can cause fatal
โข Symptom in people: Hookworm larvae enter
the top layers of skin and cause an itchy
reaction called cutaneous larva migrans. A red
squiggly line may appear where the larvae
have migrated under the skin.
18. โข *Staphylococcus aureus is a common type of
bacteria that is normally found on the skin of
people and animals. Methicillin-
resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the
same bacterium that has become resistant to
some antibiotics. Cats and other animals often
can carry MRSA without being sick, but MRSA
can cause a variety of infections, including of
the skin, respiratory tract, and urinary tract.
19. โข **MRSA can be transmitted back and forth
between people and animals through direct
contact. In people, MRSA most often causes
skin infections that can range from mild to
severe. If left untreated, MRSA can spread to
the bloodstream or lungs and cause life-
threatening infections.
