3. Cyrene, North Africa St. Mark was born in Cyrene, a town in North Africa. When he was a young boy, gangs raided the city, his family became poor and moved to Jerusalem.
4. St. Mark Meets Jesus St. Mark meet Jesus in Jerusalem and saw His miracles with his own eyes. He was one of the 70 apostles sent by the Lord to the surrounding towns His uncle was St. Barnabas. In the house of his parents = Last Supper The Holy Spirit came upon Him along with the disciples.

6. A Mission to Preach the Good News St. Mark went with his uncle in Europe to preach the Gospel With God’s will, St. Mark left him and went to North Africa to preach Christ in the city where he was born. He came to Egypt in 61 AD In the sea coast = ALEXANDRIA
7. What St. Mark Found in Alexandria? The biggest port in Egypt w/ a famous lighthouse The biggest library in the world Temples of different religions and the worship of idols St. Mark was sad by the spread of idols all over the city and became determined to preach the Word of God and open their eyes and tell them about the true religion of Jesus Christ.
8. O, One God St. Mark’s shoe strap ripped off from walking too much. He stopped by a shoe repairing shop The shoemaker = Anianus was sewing the strap together and the long needle pierced his palm. He cried with a loud voice, “O , One God.”
9. The Holy Spirit Immediately St. Mark realized that God was opening a door for him to start spreading the Good News of Christ. Filled with the Holy Spirit: He spat on the ground = clump of clay Filled the shoemaker’s wound with the clay making the sign of the Cross on his palm. Miracle = God healed his hand to be healthy again. +
10. First Christians in Egypt Anianus was amazed “How did you do that???” St. Mark told him – when you yelled “One God” this is Jesus Christ in whose power and name he was healed. Anianus believed and invited him to his house. St. Mark talked about Jesus and all his family believed They were baptized by St. Mark and became the first Christians in Egypt.
11. The Faith Grew Anianus the shoemaker was ordained Bishop Many more people believed St. Mark ordained 3 priests and 7 deacons Christianity spread fast in Alexandria St. Mark went to help St. Paul in Rome for a while.
12. 1st Church in Egypt When he came back, he found the new Christians of Alexandria built a church near the shore. They asked St. Mark to write for them all of what he knows and saw from Jesus. St. Mark wrote = the Gospel of St. Mark Beginning : “The voice of one crying in the wilderness” like the roar of a lion.
13. The Evangelist In his Gospel he wrote of all the things he saw with his own eyes. Our church calls him: “The Beholder of God” He wrote for the new Christians the way to worship during church “Cyril Liturgy” (fasting days, some regular days)
