Religious Affiliation As A Choice
Wade and Tavris's Invitation to Psychology defines religious affiliation as a choice made by a person of which particular belief system they will live
according to. Furthermore, "whether a person is a Methodist, Muslim, Catholic, Jew, Hindu, and so on, is not heritable". The religious group people
choose to belong to has a lot to do with influence from several factors, including the affiliation of their "parents, ethnicity, culture, and social class"
(142). Conversely, the term religiosity is defined as "a person's depth of religious feeling and adherence to a religion's rules" (142), and contrary to
affiliation, has a genetic component. Growing up in the Episcopal church, God has always been a part of my life. As I have grown up, however, I
have continuously assessed my religiosity regarding my faith. Using the book's definition, I believe my religiosity is subtle yet traditional. But when it
comes to my own beliefs, there are several factors that have shaped the way I perceive God, faith, religion, and their role in my life.
Growing up in the Episcopal church, I have always had a sort of "relaxed" understanding of God and His teachings. Beginning in kindergarten and
continuing through the eighth grade, I attended a private Catholic school as the only student in my grade who wasn't affiliated with the Catholic church.
Often my religion teachers would ask me questions like, "how is this different in your church?", or have me explain to the class that Episcopalian

Religion In James Agee's A Death In The Family
Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some people see religion as a helping hand, something that is
meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One
of the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the characters are very set in stone with their
beliefs. While one character turns to their religion for comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person's lack of beliefs as a reason not to perform an act
for their family. Throughout Agee's novel, religion is used as a constructive force for some characters and destructive for other characters.

Father Jackson does not give his regards to the children or say his is sorry for what has happened. After Father Jackson enters the Follet house, he
goes over and sits in Jay's chair in the sitting room which causes the children to stare at him. He does not even introduce himself to the kids he just
stares back them with such displeasure. He begins to lecture the kids about staring at him and how they should act like a proper lady and gentleman.
After he finishes lecturing them, Aunt Hannah comes into the room and brings Father Jackson to see Mary. While the adults are in the room, Rufus
and Catherine listen as the door and feel that "it was something evil, to which she was submitting almost without a struggle, and by which she was
deceived," (270). As they are listening at the door, they both imagine Father Jackson being killed in different scenarios, which reveal their distaste for
the man. The more we read on, the more we see that Father Jackson has different motives with his religion. Father Jackson is shown as a very
close–minded individual who does not seem to have any respect for someone who is not religious. He also refuses to complete Jay's burial service
because Jay was never baptized. Instead of using religion in a encouraging and positive way, Father Jackson uses his religious beliefs in a threatening

My Personal Reflection : Cultural Diversity
Since I started this class, I have a learned a great deal about cultural diversity in the classroom and abroad. My perspective has changed slightly but my
knowledge of this subject has improved. In my family, my father taught me about the civil rights movement and the evils of segregation in the U.S. My
parents taught me to be tolerant of all humans, no matter what they look like, how they dress, or their sexual orientation. My family has always been
liberal thinkers who taught me the dark history of racism and bigotry in this country. As an educator I would be accepting to all race, creeds, and
religious peoples.
In my original personal narrative, I mentioned that I grew up in a mostly white middle class town with a 15% Latino population. In some ways, I grew
up in a town that is in the forefront of a national discussion about increasing multiculturalism and acceptance of Latino Americans. We have come to
realize that not all illegal immigrants are criminals here to do us harm. Some are people who have been here many years, raised families and
contributed to our society. During my childhood, I had friends that were Korean and Latino descent, and I am grateful to have experience with those
diverse cultures. In this class and in a previous teaching class, I worked with and got to know students of different ethnicities. We learned in class
about legislation that would provide English learners with more support while they are assimilating and learning English (Buenrostro,2017). This can
only benefit everyone as we raise the level of proficiency for the newest students. We Americans may have different cultures and traditions, but we all
have value that can add to our society. I hope to continue my ethnic studies to further my understanding of other cultures. With the power of knowledge,
we can break down barriers and stereotypes.
As a teenager and college student, I have to admit that I felt somewhat suspicious of people with a different lifestyles than myself. I think I felt
threatened by people who identified themselves as gay or transgender. I was probably just afraid of difference that was unknown to me at the time. As
I got older I came to realize that whatever people do in the privacy in

Religion And Its Impact On Society
Even before there were millions of copies of bibles in circulation religion has been a part of society that has always been there. But is this idea of
rules and regulations enforced by a belief system really helpful to society? In a world without religion would there be less wars, hatred, and
discrimination? With so many people involved or affiliated with religion it is important to explore deeper into the negative impact that religion has on
society and try to make the world a better place with information that will help all. At a personal level religion fulfills the role of accounting for a
lack of knowledge and offering hope in the face of difficulties while also offering a sense of belonging. To identify with areligious ideology, and call it
the only truth and way, leads to the tremendously negative consequences of hatred, racism, and all kinds of violence. These consequences of a world
in disarray due to religion far outweigh the small personal fulfillments. As Steven Weinberg, an American physicist and Nobel laureate states, "With or
without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes
religion." Although religion claims to lead people towards truth, light, and happiness, in reality it actually leads them in the opposite direction.
The most popular argument against religion in society is the fact that religion leads to war and violence which then in turn results in poverty,

Religion Affects Daily Life
How does Religion Affect Daily Lives?
" The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not something people blindly follow for the hope of
reaching heaven. At one point or another in life, every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious person,
a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice
brings consequences and a different life with that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a
person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it affects are work life, family life, and the standards a
person holds.
Work Life
It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm,
and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they can get ahead of schedule on ordering the wings and pizza and getting good movie tickets. The
consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday, Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it,
Monday morning. So what option are you going to take?
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Full time committed religious people know the regular weekend schedule. Saturday is the day to sleep in, cook some good breakfast, and take the kids

Politics And Religion By Gerard Hauser
Politics and religion have long been entangled in the United States. The United States has struggled with the question of how to maintain an
appropriate combination of religion and politics in the public sphere for a long time. Gerard Hauser argues that public spheres are "discursive spaces
where society deliberates about normative standards and even develops new frameworks for expressing and evaluating social reality". Religion is part of
the public sphere and has an influence in American political life in affairs such as leadership, legislation and voter partisanship. Religious rhetoric plays
an important role in defining the boundaries of the political community and in setting the tone for political discourse. American democracy owes its
birth to the influence of a specific form of Christianity: English Puritanism. The Pilgrims, laid the essential groundwork for America's experiment in
self–government. Religion was in fact the primary reason for the northern settler's immigration to the New World. These settlers known as Pilgrims
because their "journey had a religious purpose". They sought to build Puritan communities, to live in America "in their manner and pray to God in
freedom". "The Pilgrims came to establish religious communities, but their beliefs called for such communities to be instituted and administered by the
consent of the governed." (Holloway, Carson) As time went by, they began to constitute and frame laws, ordinances, acts and constitutions. Our

Abstract The paper examines various scholarly works that explore the causes of religious violence. It addresses questions such as: what elements of
religion contribute to violence and protracted conflict; how does religious identity motivate groups engaged in aggressive behavior; other than threat to
and preservation of religious identity, what might be significant underlying causes of the conflict; and, what parallels could be drawn with ethnic
conflict in the construction of religious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Four Views On Salvation Readers
SUMMARY OF THE BOOK In the four views on salvation readers are presented by major advocates of the following views: pluralist by John Hick,
inclusivist by Clark Pinnock, particularist by Alister McGrath, and evidentialist by R. Douglas Geivett and W. Gary Phillips. The primary contention
of the book is about if Jesus is the only Savior? And if that is true, then what happens with those who profess faith and salvation outside of Jesus Christ.
The Four Views of Salvation are a single volume that introduced the reader to the "basic positions within evangelicalism" The editors stated that the
term pluralism favors many religions with "salvific" norms, inclusivism relates to salvation in every cultural norm, and exclusivism and the
restrictivism have a prejudicial connotation and prevent true dialogue and argument. Therefore they proposed the term particularism be used instead;
however, all four contributors to the book used the term of their personal preference or the term that they felt best advanced their viewpoint. The
primary questions are: Where is salvation found? What happens to sincere people of other faiths? What about those who never hear the gospel? The idea
for the book "arose out of the 1992 Wheaton Theology Conference" that brought evangelicals together to discuss the challenges of pluralism and
inclusivism." Religious pluralism is the greatest challenge facing Christianity in our culture, Dennis L. Okholm and Timothy R. Phillips assembled the

The Establishment Clause Analysis
While the first amendment endows several paramount freedoms, it can, at times, be onerous to understand. Both the Free Exercise Clause and the
Establishment Clause is imperative to our freedom, the Supreme Court has historically argued various ways regarding these two clauses. Our founders,
such as Thomas Jefferson, saw the importance of creating a separation between church and state. As such, no national religion was to be declared, and
still has not been. As such, there are varying approaches to establishment. By examining the historical decisions regarding these clauses, I have found
that while it is crucial to separate the church and state, these two entities can still, in some capacities, intermingle. In this specific context of the
Missouri Scrap Tire Grant Program, it is acceptable for Trinity Lutheran Church, and more specifically, their Learning Center, to receive financial
support in order to renovate their playground for safety reasons. There have been a multitude of debates regarding the various approaches to
establishment. For instance, a strict separation approach declares that the state can indirectly support a religion establishment, but can have no direct
involvement. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that this particular statute had no secular purpose. The dissent, presented by Justice Rehnquist, concluded that this was a mistaken interpretation of
constitutional history and that the Establishment Clause does not require the government to be strictly neutral between religion and nonreligion. Upon
evaluating the dissent, it can be seen that in some instances, it may be permissible to have some overlap between the government and

Tax Dollars Should Fund Religious Schools Essay
Tax Dollars Should Fund Religious Schools
The issue of whether or not to use tax dollars to provide private schools with vouchers has been controversial for many years now. Many people feel
that it is our governments obligation to provide private institutions with the proper funds, while others believe that if private schools inherit our tax
dollars then it is violation of our constitution as it promotes a particular religion. I think it is our government's responsibility to provide each and every
school with tax dollars, regardless of its orientation. Many reasons, especially popularity and success rates provide substantial evidence that private
schools should be funded by government vouchers.
The main concern of those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition there is no evidence supporting that it is unconstitutional to involve the state with religion or that anyone was coerced into practicing
religion. The Supreme Court ruled in Everson vs. Board of Education that the taxes that would be spent would be for a public purpose; that being
educating children. That is the purpose of our government to provide education to our children. In the Supreme Court case Mitchell vs. Helms the court
ruled that taxpayers' money can be used to provide certain materials for religious schools. So obviously it is not unconstitutional to fund private
schools if they already decided to give materials to these schools. Therefore there is no evidence supporting the fact that the publics taxes should not go
to private schools.
Our job as a community and a society is to provide children with education. It should not matter what school these students choose to attend, we should
still provide them with the opportunity to learn. As stated in USA Today, 47% of school
–age students would use private schools if they had the right
resources. Students should be able to decide where they want to get their education. The more a student likes their environment, the more apt they are
to learning. We should not deprive them of learning in any form. By not funding these schools we are in fact then depriving the students. According to
the Wall Street Journal, voucher students are more likely to stay in school, learn more,

Terrance did not know the answer to. The interview took place in the living room of their home Saturday afternoon. I spent an hour observing the

Religious Affiliation Helps Individuals With Constructing...
Religious affiliation helps individuals with constructing moral ideologies. An individual's religiosity is often associated with their political viewpoints.
Church attendance can effect individuals' political beliefs.
During 1970 to 2012, the percentage of the populace attending church weekly has decrease from 38% to 21%, and never attending church increased
dramatically from 12% to 43%. This trend displays the decreasing number of people who are attending church services in the United States.
Furthermore, the number of people with no religious affiliation has increased from 1% in 1960 to 13% in 1996. Although the percent of individuals
who identify as Christian is high with 49% Protestant and 22% Catholic, religious beliefs have overall decreased. The people who are religious say
their religion plays an important part of their life. 67% believe that their religion is an important factor in their life (ANES 2015). The data shows that
although the number of religiosity in the United States has lowered, religion still plays a large part of American life.
Their religious convictions lead those to vote in particular patterns. According to the table below, Catholics are 37% Republican/lean Republican and

The World Is The Best
As time elapses, ideas, thoughts, and view of the world tend to modify. I assume that the literature that is present from hundred years ago until now,
displays a shift of religion to nature. Religion used to be the basis for most of the things, but as new ideas approached, nature began to replace it. Not
implying that nature completely replaced religion, but it became a new way to understand the world. I believe there is always going to be a debate on
which way to understand the world is the best. Religious people would argue that the bible is the guide for lives and the way to control the world, but
on the other hand, science also tries to explain this idea. William Bradford, from 1590 to 1657, on his writing "Of Plymouth Plantation," ... Show more

How would it pleased God to see a person die in a desperate manner even if they had sin? God gives us life and would pardon our sins if we seek for
him. However, I believe the puritans, including Bradford, felt that there was no option of forgiveness. According to what I have read in Bradford's
story, I would say that religion could make someone selfish. I am not against religion, but this is what I conclude based on this literature. I feel
this way because it seems that they just think for themselves. They believe they are perfect and that anyone else is evil. I feel that being a religious
person, should not make them feel superior like the puritans did. I believe that in God's eye we are all the same, but the puritans saw the Native
Americans as savages and not pure. An example of this is in the "first encounter" the puritans had with the so called savages. "Thus it pleased God
to vanquish their enemies...and by his special providence so to dispose that not any of them were either hurt or hit..." (79) In my point of view, here
is a clear example of how they are being selfish. They are just worried about them not being hurt, but what about the savages? I feel that religion
means caring for everyone, but here I see the opposite of that. Again, how God would be pleased by an

Spirituality And Spirituality : How Personality And...
Death is something that will eventually happen to everyone. Some people are more comfortable with the idea of dying than others. Why is this? Are
some people just innately more fearful of dying than others or is there something else that impacts this fear? There is mixed evidence that religiosity
and spirituality have an association with the level of anxiety that people feel about the prospect of dying. There is also evidence that people with
certain personality traits are more likely to be religious than others. There is lots of evidence from empirical research that has focused on religiosity
/spirituality and how it relates to death anxiety. There has also been much research conducted as to how personality is related to religiosity and
spirituality.
Much of the research that has been conducted on personality and religion has used the Five Factor Model (FFM) personality scale as a measure of
personality. One such study that was conducted at San Diego State University by Chad Barrett and Scott Roesch (2009) looked at religious orientation
and FFM personality traits. They operationally defined religious orientation (RO) as, " how people experience religion" and consisting of Intrinsic,
Extrinsic, and Quest orientations (Barrett & Roesch, 2009, p. 195). Individuals described by intrinsic religiousness view their religion as the
framework for their lives, and they try to consistently live the religion they believe. Extrinsically–oriented individuals are generally concerned

Spiritual condition evaluation
Throughout the life of my person of interest, knowledge of the existence of a creator has had a crippling effect in his struggle to reconcile his
perception of life and the great desire for divine approval and acceptance. This is a result of the common belief that moral and spiritual development is
attained through the shedding of dogmatic belief structures, resulting in the elimination of God towards the attainment of self–realization.
Strangely, although the secular aspect is quite vividly seen in his way of life, the religious references and biblical allusions cannot be ignored.
Despite the lack of cultivation and learning in the morals and ethics of Christianity, he is able to form his own code of behavior based on example
and the behavior he views from others. It should be noted that his instinctive sense of morality comes without knowledge of God or a creator and
while this may seem to be an atheistic or at least secular way of thinking about how morality is "inborn" it is impossible to ignore the way the Bible and
religious learning influence even this aspect of his life.
It would seem that he views other people as closer to God, not simply because of his own isolation, but because he witnesses their apparent ability to
function in a world of God. This is seen on his act of acquiring a sense of morality through observation of behaviors of others
It is evident

Hospitality: The Madonna Of 115th Street
Hospitality is defined as the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. Hospitality is something that can be
seen everywhere, regardless of geographical location, religion, etc. This initially sparked my interest because hospitality is something does not require
anything special to do. Everywhere a person goes, hospitality can be seen in some way, shape, or form.
The Madonna of 115th Street is an amazing example of hospitality throughout history. The excerpt details the days and nights of the Festa. On July
16th, the great bell in the campanile of the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel announces that the festa had begun. This fetsa unites several Italian
communities from those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. Preparation for this festival can take weeks at a time, houses are
cleaned from head to toe in anticipation of housing relatives visiting from other states. For the next few weeks the community gathers together in the
streets and celebrates greatly from sunrise to sunset. Music, dancing, fires, festivals, everything is prominent in the streets as the Italian community
seeks to express itself. The festa is a time to come together and create a sense of community.Religious foundations, sharing of food, parades, all of this
signifies what it is to be a part of the Festa. Hospitality is creating a warm and welcome environment to those around you. Everything about the Festa
signifies these qualities.

Tartuffe, Religion Essay
The context surrounding the period in which Tartuffe was written in, the 17th Century is remembered as being a time of extreme power for the French
Monarchy. King Louis XIV and Cardinal Richelieu transformed France's feudal monarchy to an absolute monarchy. What must also be noted about this
time is the fact that the Catholic Church and Politicians had a great deal of power over authors and playwrights. In this time of social and religious
persecution, MoliГЁre created Tartuffe , a comedy dealing with hypocrisy and to a great extent, religion and how religion can be used in a negative
way, to mask sin. The play is known to be offensive towards the Catholic Church and religion in general. When it was first performed in 1664, it was

He is at the beginning of the play seen as a God like figure, particularly to Orgon and Madame Pernelle, by this he is strong and inspirational,
however, when he does realises he has been found out for being in the wrong, his persona changes to guilty and even vulnerable. This is shown in Act
III scene 6 when Damis accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Elmire, Tartuffe uses reverse psychology to win Orgon over by confessing the all things
awful, to an extent in which Orgon begins to sympathise with him. It is clearly shown that Tartuffe goes to the absolute extreme when he apologises to
Orgon;
Oui mon frГЁre, je suis un mГ©chant, un coupable,
Un malheureux pГ©cheur tout pleine iniquitГ©,
Les plus grand scГ©lГ©rat qui jamais ait Г©tГ©;
Chaque instant de ma vie est change de souillures;
Elle n'est qu'un amas de crimes et d'ordures;
Et je vois que le ciel, pour ma punition,
Me veut mortifier en cette occasion. The language used is extremely depressing, almost showing that it is out of character for Tartuffe to do such a
thing, he just feels that he should confess as he is under Orgon's roof and shouldn't make his son out to be a liar. This is what Orgon believes, and
although the audience knows differently, Damis is still asked to leave Orgon's house, showing Orgon, a very religious man, being completely
hypocritical, as he is undermining his family. Orgon

Religion and the Workplace
Statement of the Problem
Religion is becoming an important issue when it comes to diversity in organizations. Employers are either accommodating the increase in this diversity
by creating groups within the organization or they realize it is there and are not troubled by it, but are not creating these resource groups. As the
diversity of religion grows complaints to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission grow as well. What is behind the complaints and what is the
EEOC doing to help religion?
Background of the Study Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaints about religious discrimination are rising faster than any other
discrimination claim. Human Resources believe that this religious conflict is not a workplace issue, but an employee issue. "The most obvious
opponents of the faith–at–work movement are agnostics, people who question the existence of a higher being, and atheists, who do not believe in any
God." (Canas & Sondak, 2014, p. 205) Bobbie Kirkhart (President of the Atheist International Alliance) states religious diversity should not be the
same as race, gender, and ethnic diversity. She believes that religious groups should not be given the same status as those listed. Not just atheists and
those who question the existence of a higher being disagree with religion in the workplace, but the cause of the rise of discrimination claims could be
of religious bias from the traditional American faiths. (Day, 2005)

Religion And Its Effect On Society
Religion plays a large role in today's society, it's used to comfort us in our greatest times of need as well as explain seemingly unknowable
questions, such as what is the meaning of life, why are we here, what happens when we die, why do we suffer but now as in the past religion can be a
harmful factor in our society. It has been the cause of wars, witch hunts, and proliferated superstition. Today there are such laws that allow a parent to
deny their child adequate medical care even if it's to treat a potentially life threatening illness. In other cases religion is cited as a reason to deny
someone access to birth control. In school's modern science is at times having to contend with creationism which seems to be a reinterpreting of
modern science and is in complete opposition with established facts. Other times such things as sex education is taught inaccurately which then
leaders to things such as high rates of teen pregnancies and STD's spreading. In other countries these actions are at times more extreme such as
when we hear about suicide bombings, honor killing, and the like. In this paper I will discuss a few of these topics that I find to be pertinent, yet
the topics are many. I will discuss the harms that such actions can cause to us as a society both socially and physically due to such harmful laws, I
will also discuss the social reasons as to why such actions are performed in the first place and why they may be found to be socially acceptable. Lastly

Religious Oppression And Religious Persecution
Religious oppression, persecution... The noun is related to persecute which comes from Latin persecute meaning "followed with hostility" persecution
means hassling or singling out a person, or group, because of race, religion, or sexual orientation, gender, or social status to persecute.
Religious persecution is the systematic mistreatment of an individual or group of individuals as a response to their religious beliefs or affiliations or
lack thereof.
When I picked my topic, I chose to pick religious oppression because I feel being raised Jewish but always believing in Jesus I was always kind of told
by my rabbis not to talk about Jesus. I feel that I've been oppressed in many ways. I feel that on my Jewish heritage side my ancestors were ... Show

If you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed but praise God that you bear the name first Peter 4:16.
Many people might ask why did Christians and people that believed so highly in God and Jesus go through so many sacrifices and such suffering so
to give you a little bit of history Rome had accepted the deities from the Italian tribes the Asian minor in these provinces there were great territorial
gods such as Saturn and North Africa and Jehovah among the Jews these were accepted as legal religion.
Even if people felt that some of the acts that these religious tribes did odd or unreligious it was still considered tradition. There was local gods and
local goddesses that were worshiped by people in the Greco– Roman world and they were named and known as the Roman deities. Despite all of this
going on in the second century there was a Roman governor named Bithynia who lived on the Black Sea and he had no problem when it came to
executing people who claimed to be a Christian the name alone was a death warrant.
Another fact about Christianity is that we have endured hostility for over 300 years. A lot of people believe that persecution started with the Roman
authorities but in the New Testament's it tells about the problems between the Christians and the

Gender As A Person 's Identity
Gender is imprinted in a person's identity. A person's identity is closely connected to the social institutions he or she includes himself in. These social
institutions have influence over the lives of individuals in various aspects. One social institution an individual imparts oneself in is religion. Religious
institutions use scriptures as the primary basis for life such as the Holy Bible for the Catholics and the Quran for the Muslims. Of the data given, some
Christians and Muslim non–heterosexuals experience social exclusion because of some spiritual texts (Yip, 2005). According to a survey by Pew
Research Center 's Social & Demographic Trends done in 2013 on the religious affiliations, 48% of the LGBT Americans did not have one. The
executive director of the Gay Christian Network, Justin Lee said, "[the study] reflects a lot of my own experience in the LGBT community. Many
LGBT people have felt a lack of understanding and love from religious groups–Christians in particular–and, as a result, they often walk away from their
childhood faith and may even become very hostile to religion." That statement is just one of the many sentiments non–heterosexuals experience in
today's contemporary society. The following paragraphs will discuss how Christian and Muslims non–heterosexuals critique the traditional hermeneutics
and the credibility of institutional interpretive authority of Judeo–Christian Scriptures and Islam's Holy Book – the Quran. There are two approaches

child I mentioned, as he was the baby and only six days old when Todd was killed. I would tell him how sweet Noah is and what a kind, loving soul

The Integral Role of Religion Illustrated in Gabriel...
Religion plays an integral role in The Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia. It is generally considered by most readers that the initial
chapters don't consist of the religious and spiritual makeup of the townspeople but in fact, religion is subliminally present even earlier, within the title
of the novel itself. The word "Death" is integrally and inextricably linked with religious matter. After all, birth and the inevitably of death are the two
most important and debatable points in religion.
Religion is meant to be a solid force, helping society to bond better and progress in a civilized manner. For the same purpose, religion, with its laws
and codes of conduct, monitors peoples' way of life to ensure that humanity remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, Marquez underlines, "Both were exhausted from the barbarous work of death..." (49). Marquez exemplifies the way in which some aspects of
religion are ignored and some have great emphasis put on them. When Roman finds out that his new bride is not a virgin, he returns her. She is
beaten savagely, and her brothers are called from the brothel to come defend the family's honor. The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider
honor to be a part of the religion and instead of religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. The family believes
that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives
in front of the priest, instead of giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49). This is in total
conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has
lost the knowledge of the true religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers and not only him but
"the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Marquez continues to
demonstrate that the society was lenient on the brothers due to tradition and thus it illustrates that religion was only a minor

Personal Narrative: My Religious Affiliation
When I was thirteen, my family packed up and moved from our small New Jersey town to Austin. I was dreading the move, worried that Austin was
going to be a horrible desert with cowboys, as everyone I went to school with expected it to be as well. Obviously, I was pleasantly surprised at the
overall lack of deserts and almost completely nonexistent population of cowboys, but I was even more surprised at the open–minded environment in
which I was living. I didn't expect a city in Texas to be as liberal as it was nor did I expect the people to be as generally tolerant of other religions.
For once in my life, my religious affiliation wasn't one of the first things questioned when I was making acquaintances. If I wanted to tell someone

The Spiritual Revolution in America
"I'm spiritual but not religious." In today's society, it is a trendy phrase that many people often use to describe their belief that they do not need to be
affiliated with an organized religion in order to live a faithful and fulfilling life. As life becomes more frenzied and chaotic, people assert that they do
not have the time to engage in organized religious activity and turn to a different alternative, one that can be less limiting and narrow minded. While
spirituality means something different to everyone, at its core, spirituality provides our lives with context. It arrises from the connection one has with
themselves and one's search for meaning in life. Spirituality can take many different forms, such as meditation and yoga, ... Show more content on

And we provide them with a variety of options: Protestants, Catholic and a number of other choices. The group that we call religiously unaffiliated
consists of those who identify themselves as atheists, along with those who describe themselves as agnostics. And then the single largest part of the

their religion is "just nothing in particular" are of a younger generation. Even pop music singer Pink says, "I love Native American spirituality and
paganism, and I've studied Buddhism. I think organized religion is one of the top problems of the world actually, so no, I'd say I steer clear of
religion and go straight towards spirituality" (BBC). The rise of this type of spirituality has been driven by a sense that religion is out of keeping with
modern values. People associate religious organizations with constraining doctrines that do not allow one to think for themselves. Others also view
religion as narrow–minded and prejudicial, stifling the growth of the human spirit. Or worse, some people contend that religion is the worst of all
evils, responsible for all the wars and conflicts around the world (the persecution of Jews, endless wars of religion, religious intolerance that leads to
terrorism...). Lastly, it would also be valid to say that

Religious Expression In Public Schools
For many years, schools have struggled to decide on whether to give students the freedom of religious expression at school. This difficult topic is
especially prevalent in many public schools today. Most public schools comply with the separation of church and state by instating rules against any
kind of religious expression, essentially mandating conformity among students in terms of religious expression. Some schools, however, have decided
to place no restrictions on religious expression. This serves to promote individual freedom among students. Even if it may seem that schools strongly
differ when it comes to religious expression, schools do have something in common pertaining to this issue. They all believe that the unique decision

After all, it is the school's job to educate our future generation so they are equipped for a world containing a multitude of religious aspects– even if
doing so in an indirect manner. Providing students the freedom to practice whichever religion they choose restricts feelings of pressure to withhold
their religious expression; something they would have to withhold in the name of conformity at some public schools. As students become inevitably
educated about religion through religious expression around them, they steadily become less intolerant of other religions besides their own. The
students become accepting of the reality that we live in where many different religious beliefs exist among people in all areas of life. This effect
closely mirrors the attitude that these students will have towards religion in the real world. Not only does exposure to religious expression benefit
the students and the school, but it furthermore benefits the world as a whole by moving the future generation away from religious intolerance. This
creates a world where people can be comfortable and sure in their religion due to the lack of intolerance directed towards them. Currently, however,
religiously motivated hate crimes are on the rise. In 2004, about 10 percent of all hate crimes were religiously motivatedв€’ compared to 28 percent
today (Jackson 1). This is an example of religious intolerance in today's world which can be remedied by educating the future generation about religion
through allowing religious expression at school. The religious tolerance that is subsequently developed among these students is what this world so

Religion as a Culture in America
Religion in America has helped change and design the American landscape into a unique cultural experience. Early colonists came to America to avoid
religious persecution. Many European countries had official religions. Those that wished to practice a religion other than the official religion were
persecuted. The New World offered a place of religious freedom for people such as the Pilgrims. Our founding fathers included an amendment to the
constitution that separated church and state. The First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or

Among developed countries, the U.S. is one of the most religious in terms of its demographics. According to a 2002 study by the Pew Global Attitudes
Project, the U.S. was the only developed nation in the survey where a majority of citizens reported that religion played a "very important" role in their
lives, an opinion similar to that found in Latin America. Although participation in organized religion has been diminishing, the public life and popular
culture of the United States incorporates many Christian ideals specifically about redemption, salvation, conscience, and morality. Examples are popular
culture obsessions with confession and forgiveness, which extends from reality television to twelve–step meetings. Americans expect public figures to
confess and have public penitence for any sins, or moral wrongdoings they may have caused. Christmas Day, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, is
widely celebrated and a federal holiday, though a fair amount of its current cultural importance is due to secular reasons. European colonization has
led to some other Christian holidays such as Easter, Lent and St. Patrick's Day to be observed, though with varying degrees of religious fidelity.
Mardis Gras (Fat Tuesday) celebrations are a practice of "fattening up" prior to observing Lent six weeks before Easter. There are other religious

How Parent's Religious Affiliation Affects the Way
Parenting methods have been affected by numerous factors over the years. Parenting is something that is obviously successful or in the worst case, has
failed miserably! We found that the parents' religious affiliation affects the way they raise their children. "The particular theologies theory posits that
different religious affiliations put varying efforts into emphasizing family–formation strategies" (Pearce 2002: 325). Religious affiliations, inspired
parents to be fervent on implanting strong morals, maintaining close relational ties within their family, and encourage positive community involvement

Furthermore, discipline doesn't always have to be punishing a child; sometimes it is simply instructing and guiding them as to what choices to make,
so that they don't have to be disciplined when they find themselves at a crossroad and they end up on a road that isn't very beneficial. "If parents focus
on making their children knowledgeable on the `space between places' in social relations–not on individuals or families or particular institutions, but on
the space where these important social bodies intersect, they will help their children avoid bad decisions (Schweigert 1999: 170)." Conservative
Protestant parenting literature suggests that training children in the virtues of obedience is the first step toward their worldly success and eternal
salvation, while neglect of this gradual obedience training may ultimately result in the burden of failed parenting, and it also will have detrimental
affects on the children. One issue that could be researched further is how "the global values of obedience and autonomy may hold divergent meanings

that he is extremely strong and remains hopeful in difficult situations. Also, after working for many peasant villagers in return for food, the narrator
learns many skills that are helpful to his survival. The text states, "I was frightened to find myself entirely alone. But I remembered the two things,
which according to Olga were necessary for survival without human help. The first was a knowledge of plants and animals...The other was
possession of fire..." The young boy, being less than 10 years old, is able to remain hopeful in a frightening situation, and is able to recall important

revenge from the way he has been treated in the past. The boy (who remains unnamed throughout the book) says, "How many times had I dreamed of

Religion And The American Colonies
It is a fairly well known fact that the colonization of the New World in general, and more specifically, what would become eventually become the
United States of America, was heavily based upon commercial endeavors. However, it was also heavily influenced by the desire of people to
possess and preserve religious independence. Placing the potential for commercial success aside and focusing on the religious aspects of colonization,
the proliferation of various religions over the course of colonial history is quite extensive and, by proxy, its' influence upon developing colonial
societies was far–reaching. Because of the historical significance of many different religions throughout the colonies, it would also suggest that
religious diversity was likely equally impactful in eliciting change. All of this leads this author to speculate about how much influence religion had upon
colonial upheaval over time and whether or not the ensuing dissent was a major factor in the lead up to The French and Indian War and eventual
revolution of the American colonies. To uncover the significance and role religion played in the American colonies, a number of different articles were
reviewed, each representing different perspectives, points of view, and empirical evidence about religion in colonial America.

The Sovereignty And Goodness Of God
As time passes, the expectations that society has on women has changed. Many of these expectations had to be met for the woman to be 'complete'
with her role in society. In Rowlandson's time, her expectations were to be a housewife, a mother, and a religious follower. Rowlandson's, "The
sovereignty and Goodness of God" demonstrates the role she had when she was in the colonies and how that role changed as she became captive by
the Natives. From her writings, one can infer her place at home and how that changed as she became captive. It begins with her omission of the
soldier's failure to protect them from the Natives. While she writes about the horrendous death some soldiers receive, she does not mention much
about their courage to protect the colonist. This can only be inferred as she begins her writing with the attack. Although, she does not say what she
expected of the soldiers, her whole family stayed inside their home expecting to be saved and for the attack to come to an end. She as well as the
other women within the household were to take care of the children and the home. It is only when the fire over her head forces her to escape outside,
only to get shot and taken captive. This is demonstrated later on her writings in the fifth remove, "English army after them to this river, and saw the
smoke of their wigwams, and yet this river puts a stop to them. God did not give them courage or activity to go after us" (294). Therefore, showing the

A New Paradigm On The Open Market System Essay
Introduction
In this paper, we will analyze a new paradigm that is emerging recently around the religious institutions, the whole crux of which lies in the fact that the
organized religion thrives in the open market system. The paper is further divided into six sections: literature, theory, hypothesis, method, findings of
the study, and the discussion.
Theory and Hypothesis
The sociology of the religion has been seen to be undergoing a period of change, or a paradigm shift. Are the American kids growing up to have a
different religious inclination than the kids a generation or two ago? Religious inclination can include acknowledgement of belonging to a certain
religion, performing religious practices, attending the religious ceremonies and services, spirituality, religious donations and charities, and approving
of religious organizations (Pargament, 1997). Although the religious affiliation for all is an important factor to be considered, the affiliation among
the adolescents particularly takes away a significant share of importance. Religious affiliation among kids is believed to bring about a number of
positive outcomes including better physical health, less drug abuse, better social conditioning and functioning, and fewer risk related behaviors. The
kids who are more religiously inclined are also believed to have less signs of anxiety and depression and display a strong character (Markstorm, 1999).
However, if not handled properly, religion can also drive in the feelings

full with soda. Then I had to stand around and wait until the fizz die ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My hypothesis was rejected, in this experiment I found that the soda had more fizz without ice than it did with ice. But as I continued my experiment
I noticed the soda without ice fizzed more. I also noticed that the bigger the cube the longer it took for the soda to die down, and the smaller the ice
cube the quicker the fizz in the

Religious Affiliation As A Choice

  • 1. Religious Affiliation As A Choice Wade and Tavris's Invitation to Psychology defines religious affiliation as a choice made by a person of which particular belief system they will live according to. Furthermore, "whether a person is a Methodist, Muslim, Catholic, Jew, Hindu, and so on, is not heritable". The religious group people choose to belong to has a lot to do with influence from several factors, including the affiliation of their "parents, ethnicity, culture, and social class" (142). Conversely, the term religiosity is defined as "a person's depth of religious feeling and adherence to a religion's rules" (142), and contrary to affiliation, has a genetic component. Growing up in the Episcopal church, God has always been a part of my life. As I have grown up, however, I have continuously assessed my religiosity regarding my faith. Using the book's definition, I believe my religiosity is subtle yet traditional. But when it comes to my own beliefs, there are several factors that have shaped the way I perceive God, faith, religion, and their role in my life. Growing up in the Episcopal church, I have always had a sort of "relaxed" understanding of God and His teachings. Beginning in kindergarten and continuing through the eighth grade, I attended a private Catholic school as the only student in my grade who wasn't affiliated with the Catholic church. Often my religion teachers would ask me questions like, "how is this different in your church?", or have me explain to the class that Episcopalian women ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Religion In James Agee's A Death In The Family Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some people see religion as a helping hand, something that is meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One of the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the characters are very set in stone with their beliefs. While one character turns to their religion for comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person's lack of beliefs as a reason not to perform an act for their family. Throughout Agee's novel, religion is used as a constructive force for some characters and destructive for other characters. Arguably ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Father Jackson does not give his regards to the children or say his is sorry for what has happened. After Father Jackson enters the Follet house, he goes over and sits in Jay's chair in the sitting room which causes the children to stare at him. He does not even introduce himself to the kids he just stares back them with such displeasure. He begins to lecture the kids about staring at him and how they should act like a proper lady and gentleman. After he finishes lecturing them, Aunt Hannah comes into the room and brings Father Jackson to see Mary. While the adults are in the room, Rufus and Catherine listen as the door and feel that "it was something evil, to which she was submitting almost without a struggle, and by which she was deceived," (270). As they are listening at the door, they both imagine Father Jackson being killed in different scenarios, which reveal their distaste for the man. The more we read on, the more we see that Father Jackson has different motives with his religion. Father Jackson is shown as a very close–minded individual who does not seem to have any respect for someone who is not religious. He also refuses to complete Jay's burial service because Jay was never baptized. Instead of using religion in a encouraging and positive way, Father Jackson uses his religious beliefs in a threatening and hateful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. My Personal Reflection : Cultural Diversity Since I started this class, I have a learned a great deal about cultural diversity in the classroom and abroad. My perspective has changed slightly but my knowledge of this subject has improved. In my family, my father taught me about the civil rights movement and the evils of segregation in the U.S. My parents taught me to be tolerant of all humans, no matter what they look like, how they dress, or their sexual orientation. My family has always been liberal thinkers who taught me the dark history of racism and bigotry in this country. As an educator I would be accepting to all race, creeds, and religious peoples. In my original personal narrative, I mentioned that I grew up in a mostly white middle class town with a 15% Latino population. In some ways, I grew up in a town that is in the forefront of a national discussion about increasing multiculturalism and acceptance of Latino Americans. We have come to realize that not all illegal immigrants are criminals here to do us harm. Some are people who have been here many years, raised families and contributed to our society. During my childhood, I had friends that were Korean and Latino descent, and I am grateful to have experience with those diverse cultures. In this class and in a previous teaching class, I worked with and got to know students of different ethnicities. We learned in class about legislation that would provide English learners with more support while they are assimilating and learning English (Buenrostro,2017). This can only benefit everyone as we raise the level of proficiency for the newest students. We Americans may have different cultures and traditions, but we all have value that can add to our society. I hope to continue my ethnic studies to further my understanding of other cultures. With the power of knowledge, we can break down barriers and stereotypes. As a teenager and college student, I have to admit that I felt somewhat suspicious of people with a different lifestyles than myself. I think I felt threatened by people who identified themselves as gay or transgender. I was probably just afraid of difference that was unknown to me at the time. As I got older I came to realize that whatever people do in the privacy in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Religion And Its Impact On Society Even before there were millions of copies of bibles in circulation religion has been a part of society that has always been there. But is this idea of rules and regulations enforced by a belief system really helpful to society? In a world without religion would there be less wars, hatred, and discrimination? With so many people involved or affiliated with religion it is important to explore deeper into the negative impact that religion has on society and try to make the world a better place with information that will help all. At a personal level religion fulfills the role of accounting for a lack of knowledge and offering hope in the face of difficulties while also offering a sense of belonging. To identify with areligious ideology, and call it the only truth and way, leads to the tremendously negative consequences of hatred, racism, and all kinds of violence. These consequences of a world in disarray due to religion far outweigh the small personal fulfillments. As Steven Weinberg, an American physicist and Nobel laureate states, "With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." Although religion claims to lead people towards truth, light, and happiness, in reality it actually leads them in the opposite direction. The most popular argument against religion in society is the fact that religion leads to war and violence which then in turn results in poverty, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Religion Affects Daily Life How does Religion Affect Daily Lives? " The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not something people blindly follow for the hope of reaching heaven. At one point or another in life, every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious person, a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice brings consequences and a different life with that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it affects are work life, family life, and the standards a person holds. Work Life It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm, and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they can get ahead of schedule on ordering the wings and pizza and getting good movie tickets. The consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday, Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it, Monday morning. So what option are you going to take? Work Smarter, Not Harder Full time committed religious people know the regular weekend schedule. Saturday is the day to sleep in, cook some good breakfast, and take the kids ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Politics And Religion By Gerard Hauser Politics and religion have long been entangled in the United States. The United States has struggled with the question of how to maintain an appropriate combination of religion and politics in the public sphere for a long time. Gerard Hauser argues that public spheres are "discursive spaces where society deliberates about normative standards and even develops new frameworks for expressing and evaluating social reality". Religion is part of the public sphere and has an influence in American political life in affairs such as leadership, legislation and voter partisanship. Religious rhetoric plays an important role in defining the boundaries of the political community and in setting the tone for political discourse. American democracy owes its birth to the influence of a specific form of Christianity: English Puritanism. The Pilgrims, laid the essential groundwork for America's experiment in self–government. Religion was in fact the primary reason for the northern settler's immigration to the New World. These settlers known as Pilgrims because their "journey had a religious purpose". They sought to build Puritan communities, to live in America "in their manner and pray to God in freedom". "The Pilgrims came to establish religious communities, but their beliefs called for such communities to be instituted and administered by the consent of the governed." (Holloway, Carson) As time went by, they began to constitute and frame laws, ordinances, acts and constitutions. Our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It addresses questions such as: what elements of religion contribute to violence and protracted conflict; how does religious identity motivate groups engaged in aggressive behavior; other than threat to and preservation of religious identity, what might be significant underlying causes of the conflict; and, what parallels could be drawn with ethnic conflict in the construction of religious ... The Four Views On Salvation Readers SUMMARY OF THE BOOK In the four views on salvation readers are presented by major advocates of the following views: pluralist by John Hick, inclusivist by Clark Pinnock, particularist by Alister McGrath, and evidentialist by R. Douglas Geivett and W. Gary Phillips. The primary contention of the book is about if Jesus is the only Savior? And if that is true, then what happens with those who profess faith and salvation outside of Jesus Christ. The Four Views of Salvation are a single volume that introduced the reader to the "basic positions within evangelicalism" The editors stated that the term pluralism favors many religions with "salvific" norms, inclusivism relates to salvation in every cultural norm, and exclusivism and the restrictivism have a prejudicial connotation and prevent true dialogue and argument. Therefore they proposed the term particularism be used instead; however, all four contributors to the book used the term of their personal preference or the term that they felt best advanced their viewpoint. The primary questions are: Where is salvation found? What happens to sincere people of other faiths? What about those who never hear the gospel? The idea for the book "arose out of the 1992 Wheaton Theology Conference" that brought evangelicals together to discuss the challenges of pluralism and inclusivism." • 11. The Establishment Clause Analysis While the first amendment endows several paramount freedoms, it can, at times, be onerous to understand. Both the Free Exercise Clause and the Establishment Clause is imperative to our freedom, the Supreme Court has historically argued various ways regarding these two clauses. Our founders, such as Thomas Jefferson, saw the importance of creating a separation between church and state. As such, no national religion was to be declared, and still has not been. As such, there are varying approaches to establishment. By examining the historical decisions regarding these clauses, I have found that while it is crucial to separate the church and state, these two entities can still, in some capacities, intermingle. In this specific context of the Missouri Scrap Tire Grant Program, it is acceptable for Trinity Lutheran Church, and more specifically, their Learning Center, to receive financial support in order to renovate their playground for safety reasons. There have been a multitude of debates regarding the various approaches to establishment. For instance, a strict separation approach declares that the state can indirectly support a religion establishment, but can have no direct involvement. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tax Dollars Should Fund Religious Schools Essay Tax Dollars Should Fund Religious Schools The issue of whether or not to use tax dollars to provide private schools with vouchers has been controversial for many years now. Many people feel that it is our governments obligation to provide private institutions with the proper funds, while others believe that if private schools inherit our tax dollars then it is violation of our constitution as it promotes a particular religion. I think it is our government's responsibility to provide each and every school with tax dollars, regardless of its orientation. In addition there is no evidence supporting that it is unconstitutional to involve the state with religion or that anyone was coerced into practicing religion. The Supreme Court ruled in Everson vs. Board of Education that the taxes that would be spent would be for a public purpose; that being educating children. That is the purpose of our government to provide education to our children. In the Supreme Court case Mitchell vs. Helms the court ruled that taxpayers' money can be used to provide certain materials for religious schools. So obviously it is not unconstitutional to fund private schools if they already decided to give materials to these schools. Therefore there is no evidence supporting the fact that the publics taxes should not go to private schools. Our job as a community and a society is to provide children with education. It should not matter what school these students choose to attend, we should still provide them with the opportunity to learn. As stated in USA Today, 47% of school –age students would use private schools if they had the right resources. Students should be able to decide where they want to get their education. Not implying that nature completely replaced religion, but it became a new way to understand the world. I believe there is always going to be a debate on which way to understand the world is the best. I feel that being a religious person, should not make them feel superior like the puritans did. An example of this is in the "first encounter" the puritans had with the so called savages. Why is this? Are some people just innately more fearful of dying than others or is there something else that impacts this fear? There is mixed evidence that religiosity and spirituality have an association with the level of anxiety that people feel about the prospect of dying. There is also evidence that people with certain personality traits are more likely to be religious than others. There is lots of evidence from empirical research that has focused on religiosity /spirituality and how it relates to death anxiety. There has also been much research conducted as to how personality is related to religiosity and spirituality. Much of the research that has been conducted on personality and religion has used the Five Factor Model (FFM) personality scale as a measure of personality. One such study that was conducted at San Diego State University by Chad Barrett and Scott Roesch (2009) looked at religious orientation and FFM personality traits. Throughout the life of my person of interest, knowledge of the existence of a creator has had a crippling effect in his struggle to reconcile his perception of life and the great desire for divine approval and acceptance. This is a result of the common belief that moral and spiritual development is attained through the shedding of dogmatic belief structures, resulting in the elimination of God towards the attainment of self–realization. Strangely, although the secular aspect is quite vividly seen in his way of life, the religious references and biblical allusions cannot be ignored. Despite the lack of cultivation and learning in the morals and ethics of Christianity, he is able to form his own code of behavior based on example and the behavior he views from others. It should be noted that his instinctive sense of morality comes without knowledge of God or a creator and while this may seem to be an atheistic or at least secular way of thinking about how morality is "inborn" it is impossible to ignore the way the Bible and religious learning influence even this aspect of his life. Everywhere a person goes, hospitality can be seen in some way, shape, or form. The Madonna of 115th Street is an amazing example of hospitality throughout history. The excerpt details the days and nights of the Festa. On July 16th, the great bell in the campanile of the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel announces that the festa had begun. This fetsa unites several Italian communities from those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. Preparation for this festival can take weeks at a time, houses are cleaned from head to toe in anticipation of housing relatives visiting from other states. For the next few weeks the community gathers together in the streets and celebrates greatly from sunrise to sunset. Music, dancing, fires, festivals, everything is prominent in the streets as the Italian community seeks to express itself. The family believes that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives in front of the priest, instead of giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49). This is in total conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has lost the knowledge of the true religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers and not only him but "the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Marquez continues to demonstrate that the society was lenient on the brothers due to tradition and thus it illustrates that religion was only a minor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Personal Narrative: My Religious Affiliation When I was thirteen, my family packed up and moved from our small New Jersey town to Austin. I was dreading the move, worried that Austin was going to be a horrible desert with cowboys, as everyone I went to school with expected it to be as well. Obviously, I was pleasantly surprised at the overall lack of deserts and almost completely nonexistent population of cowboys, but I was even more surprised at the open–minded environment in which I was living. I didn't expect a city in Texas to be as liberal as it was nor did I expect the people to be as generally tolerant of other religions. For once in my life, my religious affiliation wasn't one of the first things questioned when I was making acquaintances. If I wanted to tell someone about what I believed in, or in this case what I didn't believe in, I could do it on my own time when I was comfortable enough to... For me, it wasn't as difficult as it must have been for others, an example being my parents, to grow up not feeling particularly connected to any religion. While they raised me with the option of choosing or not choosing a religion, my parents were not raised with that liberty. It must be difficult to not share similar ideologies as those close to you so deeply believe in, this being a sentiment that addresses multiple topics, not just religion (Pearce, 2007). • 32. The Spiritual Revolution in America "I'm spiritual but not religious." In today's society, it is a trendy phrase that many people often use to describe their belief that they do not need to be affiliated with an organized religion in order to live a faithful and fulfilling life. As life becomes more frenzied and chaotic, people assert that they do not have the time to engage in organized religious activity and turn to a different alternative, one that can be less limiting and narrow minded. While spirituality means something different to everyone, at its core, spirituality provides our lives with context. It arrises from the connection one has with themselves and one's search for meaning in life. Spirituality can take many different forms, such as meditation and yoga, ... The group that we call religiously unaffiliated consists of those who identify themselves as atheists, along with those who describe themselves as agnostics. And then the single largest part of the religiously unaffiliated are people who say their religion is just nothing in particular" (NPR). Smith also mentions how many of the people who say their religion is "just nothing in particular" are of a younger generation. Even pop music singer Pink says, "I love Native American spirituality and paganism, and I've studied Buddhism. I think organized religion is one of the top problems of the world actually, so no, I'd say I steer clear of religion and go straight towards spirituality" (BBC). The rise of this type of spirituality has been driven by a sense that religion is out of keeping with modern values. People associate religious organizations with constraining doctrines that do not allow one to think for themselves. Others also view religion as narrow–minded and prejudicial, stifling the growth of the human spirit. Or worse, some people contend that religion is the worst of all evils, responsible for all the wars and conflicts around the world (the persecution of Jews, endless wars of religion, religious intolerance that leads to terrorism...). • 33. Religious Expression In Public Schools For many years, schools have struggled to decide on whether to give students the freedom of religious expression at school. This difficult topic is especially prevalent in many public schools today. Most public schools comply with the separation of church and state by instating rules against any kind of religious expression, essentially mandating conformity among students in terms of religious expression. Some schools, however, have decided to place no restrictions on religious expression. This serves to promote individual freedom among students. Even if it may seem that schools strongly differ when it comes to religious expression, schools do have something in common pertaining to this issue. They all believe that the unique decision they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After all, it is the school's job to educate our future generation so they are equipped for a world containing a multitude of religious aspects– even if doing so in an indirect manner. Providing students the freedom to practice whichever religion they choose restricts feelings of pressure to withhold their religious expression; something they would have to withhold in the name of conformity at some public schools. As students become inevitably educated about religion through religious expression around them, they steadily become less intolerant of other religions besides their own. The students become accepting of the reality that we live in where many different religious beliefs exist among people in all areas of life. This effect closely mirrors the attitude that these students will have towards religion in the real world. Not only does exposure to religious expression benefit the students and the school, but it furthermore benefits the world as a whole by moving the future generation away from religious intolerance. This creates a world where people can be comfortable and sure in their religion due to the lack of intolerance directed towards them. Currently, however, religiously motivated hate crimes are on the rise. In 2004, about 10 percent of all hate crimes were religiously motivatedв€’ compared to 28 percent today (Jackson 1). This is an example of religious intolerance in today's world which can be remedied by educating the future generation about religion through allowing religious expression at school. Early colonists came to America to avoid religious persecution. Many European countries had official religions. Those that wished to practice a religion other than the official religion were persecuted. The New World offered a place of religious freedom for people such as the Pilgrims. According to a 2002 study by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, the U.S. was the only developed nation in the survey where a majority of citizens reported that religion played a "very important" role in their lives, an opinion similar to that found in Latin America. Although participation in organized religion has been diminishing, the public life and popular culture of the United States incorporates many Christian ideals specifically about redemption, salvation, conscience, and morality. Examples are popular culture obsessions with confession and forgiveness, which extends from reality television to twelve–step meetings. Americans expect public figures to confess and have public penitence for any sins, or moral wrongdoings they may have caused. Christmas Day, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, is widely celebrated and a federal holiday, though a fair amount of its current cultural importance is due to secular reasons. European colonization has led to some other Christian holidays such as Easter, Lent and St. Patrick's Day to be observed, though with varying degrees of religious fidelity. Mardis Gras (Fat Tuesday) celebrations are a practice of "fattening up" prior to observing Lent six weeks before Easter. "If parents focus on making their children knowledgeable on the `space between places' in social relations–not on individuals or families or particular institutions, but on the space where these important social bodies intersect, they will help their children avoid bad decisions (Schweigert 1999: 170)." Conservative Protestant parenting literature suggests that training children in the virtues of obedience is the first step toward their worldly success and eternal salvation, while neglect of this gradual obedience training may ultimately result in the burden of failed parenting, and it also will have detrimental affects on the children. One issue that could be researched further is how "the global values of obedience and autonomy may hold divergent meanings for different segments of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of his many strengths is that he is extremely strong and remains hopeful in difficult situations. But I remembered the two things, which according to Olga were necessary for survival without human help. The first was a knowledge of plants and animals...The other was possession of fire..." The young boy, being less than 10 years old, is able to remain hopeful in a frightening situation, and is able to recall important information about survival. Although the narrator seems like a very kind and knowledgable boy, he does have a few weaknesses, as every human does. One of his weaknesses is that near the end of the novel, the young boy ditches his faith in God and his prayers, and turns to his anger and revenge from the way he has been treated in the past. The boy (who remains unnamed throughout the book) says, "How many times had I dreamed of the time when I would be strong enough to return, set their settlements on fire, poison their children and cattle, lure them into deadly swamps...eventually my hatred and appetite for evil would grow like a noxious weed..." • 38. Religion And The American Colonies It is a fairly well known fact that the colonization of the New World in general, and more specifically, what would become eventually become the United States of America, was heavily based upon commercial endeavors. However, it was also heavily influenced by the desire of people to possess and preserve religious independence. Placing the potential for commercial success aside and focusing on the religious aspects of colonization, the proliferation of various religions over the course of colonial history is quite extensive and, by proxy, its' influence upon developing colonial societies was far–reaching. Because of the historical significance of many different religions throughout the colonies, it would also suggest that religious diversity was likely equally impactful in eliciting change. All of this leads this author to speculate about how much influence religion had upon colonial upheaval over time and whether or not the ensuing dissent was a major factor in the lead up to The French and Indian War and eventual revolution of the American colonies. To uncover the significance and role religion played in the American colonies, a number of different articles were reviewed, each representing different perspectives, points of view, and empirical evidence about religion in colonial America. Religion throughout Colonial America To begin with, religious worship in Colonial America was as diverse as the various colonies themselves; different geographical landscapes and a ... • 39. The Sovereignty And Goodness Of God As time passes, the expectations that society has on women has changed. Many of these expectations had to be met for the woman to be 'complete' with her role in society. In Rowlandson's time, her expectations were to be a housewife, a mother, and a religious follower. Rowlandson's, "The sovereignty and Goodness of God" demonstrates the role she had when she was in the colonies and how that role changed as she became captive by the Natives. From her writings, one can infer her place at home and how that changed as she became captive. It begins with her omission of the soldier's failure to protect them from the Natives. While she writes about the horrendous death some soldiers receive, she does not mention much about their courage to protect the colonist. This can only be inferred as she begins her writing with the attack. Although, she does not say what she expected of the soldiers, her whole family stayed inside their home expecting to be saved and for the attack to come to an end. She as well as the other women within the household were to take care of the children and the home. It is only when the fire over her head forces her to escape outside, only to get shot and taken captive. This is demonstrated later on her writings in the fifth remove, "English army after them to this river, and saw the smoke of their wigwams, and yet this river puts a stop to them. God did not give them courage or activity to go after us" (294). Therefore, showing the incapability of the soldiers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. A New Paradigm On The Open Market System Essay Introduction In this paper, we will analyze a new paradigm that is emerging recently around the religious institutions, the whole crux of which lies in the fact that the organized religion thrives in the open market system. The paper is further divided into six sections: literature, theory, hypothesis, method, findings of the study, and the discussion. Theory and Hypothesis The sociology of the religion has been seen to be undergoing a period of change, or a paradigm shift. Are the American kids growing up to have a different religious inclination than the kids a generation or two ago? Religious inclination can include acknowledgement of belonging to a certain religion, performing religious practices, attending the religious ceremonies and services, spirituality, religious donations and charities, and approving of religious organizations (Pargament, 1997). Although the religious affiliation for all is an important factor to be considered, the affiliation among the adolescents particularly takes away a significant share of importance. Religious affiliation among kids is believed to bring about a number of positive outcomes including better physical health, less drug abuse, better social conditioning and functioning, and fewer risk related behaviors. The kids who are more religiously inclined are also believed to have less signs of anxiety and depression and display a strong character (Markstorm, 1999). However, if not handled properly, religion can also drive in the feelings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
