6. Problem
Mental Health Stigma
“Now, let's see what your problem
is...”
“Try some pills and see which ones
won't turn you into an addict.”
“Just shut up and deal with it.”
7. Our goal
Problem: Mental health care is
serious and scary
Solution: Make it as simple as taking
an aspirin
18. Findings
People use entertainment to de-
stress
- Watching videos , etc
- Different people have different coping
methods
- Not very beneficial, but…
19. Findings
People have mixed feelings about
therapy
- Would support someone they knew in
therapy
- Reluctant to let others know if they
personally had therapy
24. Future work
Build out the app
- Actual phone app, not web-based
- Fully-functional, all features
- Scalable for large populations
25. Future work
Extend to other universities
- For now focus on college; may extend
to high school
26. Future work
Frequent updates: keep users
coming back
- Reduce churn rate (retain users)
- Add new content such as strategies,
information/resources
27. Future Work
Easing in and graduating users
- Start with familiar activities
- Suggest more therapeutic strategies
- Help users make these decisions on
their own
28. Future work
Pilot test
Have a group of students use app for at
least a month, then gather results of how
well it actually works
Applied Behavioral Economics
Intertemporal choice: trade off between costs and benefits at different points in time
Ice cream example
You can’t even make a recurring appointment in May
Intimidating therapists
All therapists do is give you drugs
Student stress is normal – self-stigma
"people think that counseling/mental health is all or nothing, we want to show that you can be in the middle"
Kayu
-something to do with mental health (depression, etc.), inspired by ABE class
-at first thinking about improving on existing resources (Tang Center)
-did some initial usability tests of existing Tang Center website
-many students found it difficult to use the site/process; confusing, not easy to get to
-Tang Center has a lot of information/resources available, but it’s often hidden through tons of submenus
-not very easy to find what you need right away
-oftentimes students expressed frustration or wanting to just give up before finding what they needed
Quick link to portal is hard to find
Portal is outdated and confusing; go through lots of hoops before you can actually make an appointment
Lots of menus/submenus
Useful information, but just a series of links to other places
-after interviewing some people, and interviewing Dr. Heeter (expert interview), we had our ‘ah ha’ moment
-we take aspirin for a headache (physical health), so why can’t we do the same for mental health?
-also to instill the idea that mental health exists in everybody, we have it alongside mental health
-focuses more on the idea of maintaining and being aware of one’s mental state
-track stress over time, give suggestions to lower it/maintain good mental state
-the first scope shifted into the second, still ultimately about giving students access to tools, but with a different angle
-this approach is to help them to realize that taking care of their mental health is just as important as physical health
-final prototype built around tracking and managing stress, with the app suggesting appropriate strategies based on stress levels (and over time)

Something that people already do, so this will get them used to
Kayu
- Being stressed out
is expected
- You should just be
able to power through
(Still Kayu)
-build actual app (not just mobile-friendly website)
-finish account/login system to be able to track user activity
-add in more strategies, customizing options
