• He was a theorist who looked into why people
used the media.
• He found a lot of reasons why they did and
split them into 4 main categories
3. 1) Information
• This was to find out about relevant events/
conditions that are happening in the world.
• This is based around self education, natural
curiosity and pure interest of what happens in
the world.
• Examples of this are newspapers and television
news.
4. 2) Personal identity
• He thought this was about personal values and
what they thought about certain aspects in
media.
• This could be that it relates to behavior, looking
in to the media and finding out what kind of
people they are, examples of this are children
idolizing celebrities.
5. 3) Integration and social
interaction
• This he thought was about feeling social
empathy and feeling sorry about what was going
on in the world,
• This is based on having a substitute for real life.
• People may feel that media replaces their social
life as they may have problems interacting.
6. 4) Entertainment
• This he believed was a way for people to get
out of their normal lives, escaping their
problems almost hiding from real life events.
• In another way, it ,may be seen as relaxing, to
forget about the stress of your life, helps you
to relax and take your mind of things.
7. Examples
The news; a way to learn about what happens in
the world, a way to analyze people thoughts
and processes.
