The Vital sign
1:Blood pressure(BP)
the blood pressure is the pressure that the blood flows in the walls of
Blood tubes , we measure two differentNumber one is calledsystolic blood
pressure that is when the heart Pumbs the blood to the body, the other
One is calleddiastolic describes when the blood flow to the heart or
between two beats.
The Normal Bp:120systolic 80diastolic (120/80)
We calledHypertension when the Bp is 140/100 and above
Also we calledhypotension when Bp is 100/50 and under
When we measure the BP we use Blood pressure Cuff ,monitor cuff and
digital BP or auto BP
The Symptoms of High BP:-
o severe headache.
o Fatigue or confusion.
o Vision problems.
o Chest pain.
o Difficulty breathing.
o Irregular heartbeat.
o Blood in the urine.
o Pounding in your chest, neck, or ears.
o The symptoms of Low BP:=
4. Shaafi medical College
o fatigue.
o lightheadedness.
o dizziness.
o nausea.
o clammy skin.
o depression.
o loss of consciousness.
o blurry vision.
2:The Pulse rate:-
Also called heart Rate tells how fast or slow that the heart beats per minute
The Normal PR or HR:- 60-80beats per minute
Tachy cardia(fast):-100 and more beats per min.
Brady cardia(slow):- 50/bpm
When we measure the heart rate we use pulse-oxymeter , Monitor or by counting the
hand
How I measure by counting my hand?
To measure your heart rate, simply check your pulse. Place your index and third
fingers on your neck to the side of your windpipe. To check your pulse at your wrist,
place two fingers between the bone and the tendon over your radial artery — which is
located on the thumb side of your wrist.
When you feel your pulse, count the number of beats in 15 seconds. Multiply this
number by four to calculate your beats per minute.
Keep in mind that many factors can influence heart rate, including:
Age:- the youngest the age the more heart rate
Fitness and activity levels:-the activity level your pulse will be fast
Being a smoker:- always have more pulse rate
Having cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol or diabetes
Air temperature
Body position (standing up or lying down, for example):- the best position is
when lying down
Emotions:they are increase when you feel something
Medications
3:The Breathing Rate:-
Breathing rate:telss how many times that the person take oxygen and remove
carbondioxde
5. Shaafi medical College
We use to measure the breathing rate by pulse-oxymeter monitor or by
The calculation for the respiratory rate is actually very easy. It's simply the number of
breaths a person takes per minute. A breath counts as one inhale and exhale. Breathe
in (this is half a breath) and breathe out (this is the other half). Many times people just
count the number of times a person breathes in and count that as a breath instead.
You'll have to breathe out eventually, right?
So if you were to use a stopwatch and watch how many times that happens per
minute, that's your breathing rate. Ain't nobody got time for that though!
If you really don't have time, then you can simply watch a person breathe for 15, 20,
or 30 seconds. Then you can multiply the number of breaths taken during that time by
4 (15 x 4 = 60), 3 (20 x 3 = 60), or 2 (30 x 2 = 60) to get your respiratory rate.
Let's say a patient, Tom, breathes 10 times in 30 seconds. Then his respiratory rate is
10 respirations multiplied by 2 (from 2 x 30 = 60). So his respiratory rate is then 20
breaths (respirations) per minute.
4:Temperature
The Normal temperature is 37-38c
We use Thermometer when we measure the Temp
When the temperature is high we say there is a fever
