2. Introduction
A muffler (silencer in many non-US English speaking
countries) is a device for decreasing the amount
of noise emitted by the exhaust of an internal combustion
engine. The US Patent for an ‘Exhaust muffler for engines’
was awarded to Milton O. Reeves and Marshall T. Reeves
of Columbus, Indiana of the Reeves Pulley Company on
11 May 1897. US Patent Office application № 582485
states that they “have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Exhaust-Mufflers for engines”
3. Objectives
Provide the reliability of standard muffler.
Match the system weight with that of the previous
system.
Design a system that meets and exceeds the team’s
needs.
Energy generation by supplying dynamo gas to the
muffler.
Better baffle system.
Holes at the surface of the system in order to have
increase flow of exhaust gas.
4. Problem statement
Standard muffler working based on basic sound decibel
reducer.
The terms intends to take it a step further and advancing
the system by creating better in the muffler.
5. How does a muffler works?
The muffler is filled with tubes, channels, and holes.
They’re arranged in such a way that sound is directed
through the system, losing energy as it travels.
To achieve this, the tubes, holes and channels inside
must be perfectly aligned or the sound waves will simply
bounce past one another, which wouldn’t reduce the
engine noise at all.
There are four sections in your muffler. The inlet is the
part that attaches to the rest of the exhaust system, and
where exhaust gas and sound enters. The resonator
chamber is where a cancellation sound wave is created.
Then there’s the second section, which is where you’ll
find two perforated tubes that further cancel sound.
6. Components of a muffler
HEADER – Allows for integration of exhaust system into
vehicle engine and to ensure proper fit on the vehicle
body.
DIFFUSER – Improves engine performance in a specific
taxque bond, highly and angle.
EXHAUST TIP – Acts as a final restriction of acaustic
sand and direct fumes away from vehicle deriver, is
adjustable.
7. Components of a muffler
Located inside the muffler is a set of tubes.
These tubes are designed to create reflected
waves that interfere with each other or cancel
each other out. Take a look at the inside of
this muffler:
The exhaust gases and the sound waves
enter through the center tube. They bounce off
the back wall of the muffler and are reflected
through a hole into the main body of the
muffler. They pass through a set of holes into
another chamber, where they turn and go out
9. Fabrication
Fabrication of muffler consist of many manufacturing
methods cutting, bending, welding, grinding ,metal rolling
and drilling.
Raw materials used:
2mm metal plate.
Core.
Metal pipes.
Sheet metals.
10. Fabrication procedure
2mm metal plate is bent and welded in the
shape of cuboid with the top surface open for
the arrangement of core to reduce noise
The core, tubes and channels are arranged in
such a way that the sound wave should
bounce back to reduced level
Two drilled holes are made at either opposite
surface of cuboid box for inlet and outlet of
exhaust system and pipes are welded to it.
Upper surface plate is then welded.
