complement the beats and rhythm of music. Teams may also put at additional focus on
incorporations such as jumps, jump variations, control jumps, stalls and floor work. No props.

work, leaps and turns. Emphasis is placed on proper technical execution, extension, control, body
placement and team uniformity. No props.

Poms must be used at least 80% of the routine. Important characteristics of a pom routine include
synchronization and visual effects, along with proper pom placement and dance technique. Motions

Graduate Programs
Master of Arts in Liberal Studies
The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program at the Universi-
ty of Memphis allows students to customize an interdisciplinary
course of study. The program is for those seeking the personal en-
richment provided by liberal learning and the development of intel-
lectual skills necessary to lifelong learning—critical reading, scholarly
writing, and the art of interpersonal communication.
Master of Professional Studies
The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) is an interdisciplinary graduate de-
gree program in the social sciences and the professions. The 33-hour MPS
program is designed for working adults who wish to pursue graduate profes-
sional studies that combine two or more disciplines. The program provides
the flexibility to meet the demand by students for online graduate-level edu-
cation.
The MPS program offers three concentrations:
Human Resources Leadership provides the skills to be leaders of this
department working with top management to determine policies and
requirements which ensure that human resource tasks are accomplished
according to strategic plans and the goals of the organization.
Strategic Leadership prepares students to lead in today’s rapidly chang-
ing professional environment. The interdisciplinary approach focuses on
the areas of leadership, communication, strategic planning and assess-
ment, organizational structure, and research/data analysis.
Training and Development prepares students to specialize in on-site
training or distance training by gaining the skills to discuss, assess, and
apply leadership theories and concepts; analyze and report data and
program evaluation; understand e-learning technologies; and manage
and design training materials.

Individualized Degree Program:
Design Your Own Degree
Students may create an individualized degree program
through the University College and earn a Bachelor of Profes-
sional Studies or a Bachelor of Liberal Studies. The program is
interdisciplinary in nature and designed to serve students
whose personal and career goals are not met by other degree
programs at the University of Memphis. Students pursuing this
option will prepare a Baccalaureate Contract which is designed
in consultation with an advisor and then submitted for approv-
al by the college’s administrators. Our graduate program offers
a similar program through a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies.
Experience Counts
Through the University of Memphis’ Degree Completion and
Experiential Learning Credit (ELC) programs, use your past to shape
your future. Started college but never finished? If you left in good
standing-even if you attended another college or university-you could
transfer your previous college credit toward a degree from the
University of Memphis.
Never went to college? At the University of Memphis, we believe that
professional and personal development often occurs outside the
classroom. With ELC, you can earn up to 30 credit hours for past work
experience in information technology, real estate, law enforcement
and a variety of industries. For more information, please email
experiencecounts@memphis.edu.

18. Tax Benefits for
Education
Students who take
the Lifetime
Learning Credit
may not take the
American
Opportunity Credit.
Three Available Federal Government Tax Breaks for
Continuing Education Students
Lifetime Learning Credit
As the name implies, this credit is
intended for older students looking to
retrain or to further their educations,
perhaps even in retirement.
Students do not have to be enrolled in
a degree program to qualify for this
credit.
It can be used by someone taking just
one postsecondary course, as long as
it is at a qualifying institution
Continuing education students often
miss this credit because they
mistakenly believe it was only for
students in a degree program
American Opportunity Credit
This credit modified the existing Hope
Credit to allow more parents and
students to qualify.
The full credit is available to people
whose modified adjusted gross income
is $80,000 or less, or $160,000 or less
for married couples filing a joint
return. The credit phases out for
people with incomes above those
levels.
Students, either taxpayers or their
dependents, qualify the tax filer for a
credit of up to $2,500 a year per
student for tuition, fees and course
materials for each of four years in an
undergraduate program.
Deduct $2,500 a year
for tuition, fees, and
course materials.
19. Continuing education students whose incomes are too high to qualify for the
Lifetime Learning Credit and who do not otherwise qualify for the American
Opportunity Credit may qualify for the tuition and fees deduction.
A deduction allows a taxpayer to lower the amount of income on which taxes are
paid, which in turn often lowers the tax bill.
Someone single and earning $80,000 or less can take a deduction of up to $4,000
for qualified education costs for that person or a dependent.
Those married and filing jointly can take the deduction if income is $160,000 or
less.
There are no restrictions on the number of years the deduction can be taken, and it
does not matter if attendance is full time or part time.
Taking a tax credit or deduction, even if some of the money is refunded, will not
affect financial aid.
